Yeah I'd generally agree with this and pariticularly the point about specialists v all-rounders. Sometimes we envisage the match as 11 head-to-head battles, as if there were 11 balls on the park simultaneously, which is nothing like how football works with two collectives. I don't think Cole was particularly expansive going forward and his left foot never seemed capable of doing anything over 15 yards or so. But as @Enigma_87 says, his attacking contribution was still significant because he fitted very well in the neat-and-tidy build-up play of Arsenal. He had a great short game, linking well with Pires and Henry down the left and then Malouda, Duff and Robben for Chelsea. Would also agree with Enigma that Cole's a notch above Evra - defensively he's in the top handful of left-backs of all time for me - would probably put him above a couple of the sacred cows of the draft world as well in that respect.

Needed a 2nd option at RW depending on the opposition and of course, its not a 4-4-2 without an all English wing.
 
Feckers below us doing a good job of limiting options for those at the top. Good drafting. Alonso was the pick that hurt the most.

Cheers mate. Really happy with it so far, especially considering the near exhausted modern day pool.

Probably one of the last "pure" defenders in Sol and Ayala era, before the ball playing ones.

Yeah, thought Scholesy would fit nicely in that team, although questions again would be raised about him fitting in with Xavi.

I suppose he has an easy pick next to pair with Passarella.

invictus and me spoke about that few weeks ago, is there any way post 06 Scholes would fit into Barca alongside Xavi? Iniesta and Messi would be on the wings with someone like Villa up front, only issue is Scholes and Xavi in the same team, would it work? I reckon there is no middle ground, either one(or both) of them would be crap or it would be a dream pairing. Im not sure it would work but both of them have huge respect for each other so it just might....i know id pay a lot of money to see it, even if it was a charity/friendly game :)

I don't see why not personally. Scholes fitted pretty well alongside another passer in Carrick, whilst Xavi for Spain usually played with bunch of playmakers in Silva, Xabi, Busquets in the middle.

Iniesta/Scholes is also a good link which would be complimentary whilst Xavi is at RCM with an anchor behind them. Scholes has got the work rate and defensive game and in a highly industrious side with the wingers (Iniesta/Messi) tracking back would pretty much resemble the Barca side with Pedro on the left that beat us in11'

You can swap Pedro and Iniesta and Villa and Messi.

In order for that to work tho you need Xavi from 08-10, not the latter version of him.
 
I wouldn't pose any questions over the compatability of Xavi/Scholes. If anything, they'd thrive with someone else on their wavelength. Certainly, I'd rather have Xavi alongside someone of Scholes' ilk, rather than someone he can't play one-twos with in little pockets of midfield space. Maximise their qualities by playing them together - as Xavi says, 'I play well by association'.

Xavi/Scholes and random holder (plenty around to do the necessary job, Makelele always goes first but there are many others) would have been lovely.

Uncertainty in planning....

Scholes is a better player than Fabregas, but I still think Fabregas/Xavi is tactically a better fit. Scholes's peak was in direct passing game. If you want to organize a quick counter or spring open the defence with a pinpoint pass, it'd be right up his alley....but it'd essentially be the polar opposite of the way Xavi runs a game. He's more of a let's probe for weakness and loves interaction with other midfielders. Fabregas is also more versatile and more comfortable in wider areas and overall has a better synergy with Xavi.

His Barca move was a bad choice. With Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets and Alcantara he certainly was luxury to their needs and no way they can fit him into that mix. Outside of tiki-taka, with a simple and effective passer like Simeone behind them, that duo has the creativity and workrate the spring open the trio ahead.

I know I should be going for defenders. There is a world class defender I can go for. But I can't help myself.

Agree. Funny thing is that's exactly what EAP could have got (although Scholes instead of Simeone may not have ended up at Cole teeing him up).

What I least like isn't Xavi-Fabregas but a powerful B2B like Simeone limited to a holding role.
 
I don't think Scholes and Xavi in a 4-3-3 is a natural fit either. If you are playing Xavi in a 4-3-3 then it is ideal to partner him with a holding midfielder and an attacking CM. Depends on which Scholes version he uses but the peak Scholes for me was a deep lying CM great at initiating counters. If he was played with Xavi it would be more like his NT setup where he had Busquets and Alonso - who is rather similar to Scholes - behind him in an attacking gig, and that wasn't that attractive.

But not a huge issue anyway. People pigeonhole Xavi far too much in particular setups, he can dominate the opposition in a lot of setups.
 
The biggest issue i have is that both are at their best while controlling the game, not sure if two of that ilk can share duties on that. Yes Scholes played with Carrick and Xavi played with a lot of playmakers but Carrick while not being selfless as Busquets(tbh nobody is) he still was pretty selfless and let Scholes do the talking while he was staying put in a supporting role.
