I work with young disadvantaged kids - some of them have only recently begun walking, some cant even remember there own name, some have so little joy in there lives becasue they have spent their entire lives in care having been rejected by their parents - but once in a while they get out on the pitch and have a wonderful time....... to see people using the term "spastics" in such a carefree manner - especially when you have no idea of how these people live - is cowardice in its worst possible form.

There are lots of phrases and words in modern language usage that have ill-intentioned sources, for most part the user isn't deliberately making a hateful or offensive reference. I would think the intention or the context in which the word is being used is more important that the word itself.

The signification of the word has changed from it's original use. Yes it's become derrogatory, hence no more "spastic society" shops, but this more likely indicates than the term has become a general term of abuse.
