Season 11/12 he got 14 assists, season 12/13 he got 9 assists. People think he's always been a poor crosser of the ball and like they do on here for many players, they allow the past 1-2 seasons to cloud their judgement of a player.
When he played right mid 5/6 years ago it has no revelance as he is a right back now.

It bares a lot of relevance as people are slating him for his crossing, not his defensive capabilities.

Valencia was capable of going past a defender with speed and power before delivering the ball in the box.. now he puts he foot on the ball and passes it sideways or backwards. Somehow he lost all his offensive capabilties while having developed decent defensive qualities.

Ive seen more good crosses from Dalot this season than from Valencia...

That's why we bought him. It won't happen right away but over the course of the season, yeah.

Valecnia's days have got to be numbered. What he did in a home game against Wolves was nothing short of criminal. If not Valencia, its Young or Dalot. I don't see Mourinho giving it to Dalot right away but IMO it should be given to him starting next game.

I assumed he'd been signed to take the position, just didn't think it might happen so soon

It was the Carabao Cup last night. It's not like Valencia will never play again. Dalot will be introduced gradually.

Again, I'm aware. I feel like it is going to be less gradual than I first thought.

Doubtful. The perception is skewed by the number of appearances in a week but remember that Dalot wouldn't have appeared in the CL game if the playing surface had been grass. The preference is to introduce him gradually. It's not like he had a lot of appearances for Porto, so throwing him in at the deep end isn't a smart idea.

Bet you £50 he’s the confirmed starter well before Christmas.

One of the few things Mourinho has done right recently is to introduce him gradually into the first team. Don't believe he will play vs West Ham when they have players like Yarmolenko, Felipe Anderson or Antonio. Easy to see who would be their target, keeping in mind they started to recover recently too, so their confidence as a team is improving also.

Yeah, as much as I want him to play I think it's good to build his confidence up

If you have a house semi burning you don't send rookies to fight the fire imo.

Rather send rookies than men on wheelchairs.
If you mean Valencia he is a solid defensive fullback, looking at the last 2 games I don't know if it is good idea to send a rookie against some of the players West Ham has, if it was at Old Trafford maybe, as the situation is now maybe a gamble.

Valencia the fireman would run quickly towards the house then stop turn around and give the hose to someone else.

Too harsh on Valencia. The problem is collective, not individual. None of your players are performing at their best level, the good, the normal and the bad. Easy to scapegoat some players.

That is true but it is fair to call out a player that has lost any attacking influence they had years ago.

Some are underperfoming but some are at their perfect level. Valencia is one of these who is at his own level now.

@edgar allan @el3mel I watched the last 2 games, and the way they are playing you could have there Messi Ronaldo and Modric together and I don't know if you would win. Maybe if they solved the problem alone. But its right to point Valencia is nearing his end, but looking at this context I don't know if away at West Ham is the best time to take this kind of risks.

Valencia doesn't even run nowadays. Multiple times there're loads of space ahead of him and instead of challenging the defender for a run in it, he dances over it a little bit then turns and passes backwards. Has been like that since last season.

I don't think we're losing much at this point. The season is probably pretty much fecked so better to use it to develop some players like Dalot. He'll benefit from these minutes unlike Valencia.

Fair enough.

We have 99 problems and Valencia is but one.

In 30 mins on his debut Dalot showed more attacking output than Valencia has managed in the last few years. I had honestly forgotten the last time we had a full back attack with pace beat their man and put dangerous crosses in. I have missed that type of play so much.

He may have a few poor games and may make mistakes but I would take that every day than play Valencia now. Valencia's body language says to me that he knows he is done.

If the fans are prepared for that kind of risk. The problem is that I don't know if the majority think like you, not to mention Mourinho. :)

I think a considerable portion of the match day fans would be ready.

We should have kept Fosu Mensah and made him compete with Dalot or in difficult games play E Bailly as Right Back letting Shaw roam forward at wil!

Bailly? He can't even play center back these days.

:boring:

Mourinho brought him from being an unknown to playing for United. :)

He wasn’t unknown at all. It was reported that at least a dozen clubs were interested in him - and we actually paid more than his release clause to ensure he signed for us. Having said that, I’m sure Jose was a big influence in bringing him here.

Maybe he was unknown for you, those who follow youth football, international tounaments, UEFA Youth League know very well who he is, presumably your scouts even know him better, anyway maybe today its not the best day to discuss this.

You completely missed my point.
