To be honest, after watching Hernandez this WC I think we'd be fine with Rooney, Hernandez, Macheda, Owen, Diouf/Welbeck IF we buy a creative attacking midfielder. How on Earth is Berbatov gonna be getting games with Rooney and surely now Hernandez ahead of him?

I also think Josh King will step up this season.

If selling Berbatov could raise money toward the absolutely imperative signing of Ozil (shhh I can dream), I'd say go for it.

How the feck is Hernandez ahead of Berbatov when he's yet to play for us? :wenger:

Big games, we'll most probably revert to a 451 with Rooney up top on his own. Majority of other games we'll play 442 with Rooney and Berbatov as our first pairing. The likes of Macheda/Owen/Hernandez I would imagine will be limited to substitute appearances and starts in the Carling/FA Cups, barring injuries.

based on what?

you said that Hernadez is yet to play for us so by the same token you cannot wirte his chances off.

Nobody has written his chances of but it's highly unlikely he's going to come straight into the side at the expense of Berbatov, Macheda and Owen is it? Fergie didn't rush the likes of Rooney, Ronaldo, Nani, Anderson and the plethora of other youngsters he's had down the years so I don't think he'd change the habit of lifetime by rushing Hernandez into the side. He'll be slowly blended in.

Excited?

3rd Time Lucky right?

Is it finally going to come together for our number 9?

He's had his chance. He wasted it. I suspect he'll be sold this summer but if he's still at the club then he'll spend most of the season sat on the bench watching while others get to show what they can do.

Put it this way, come march, april, may, when we need a goal to rescue us, is Sir Alex going to put his faith in Hernandez or Berbatov? Hernandez has just demonstrated in spectacular style that he's a big game player; he'll be the one given playing time against the weaker premiership opponents so he's ready for when we really need him.

Last season Berbatov started 24 premiership games with 9 sub appearances. Owen started 5 with 14 off the bench, Macheda 1 start, 4 sub, Diouf 0 starts, just 5 sub. Add Hernandez and you can see that it is highly unlikely that Berbatov will feature anything like as much this time around unless Rooney has a long term injury.

The only thing I'm not looking forward to about the new season is Berbatov and all the hassle he will bring off the field and his inability to perform for us.

It's almost like most of the fans of United are from England!

But I agree the Berba bashing can wait, we're going to have plenty of it next season which I'm really not looking forward to (the bashing, not the football!).

I think it's safe to say:

Hernandez > Berbatov.

A joke.
That will prove to be true.
Maybe

Even I have to say that that's a stupid thing to say before the guy has played a game for us. Let's wait and see shall we? Reserve judgement and eventually form an opinion following some actual performances.

To anyone who's watched Hernandez's performances in the WC it is plainly clear that this kid is not a Carling Cup player. He's scoring goals against Argentina, Holland, Italy and France FFS!

His positioning, touch, pace, movement and finishing are of a quality that will walk into the first team squad at Manchester United. This lad is a proper signing, and he'll make an immediate impact.

If Fergie was preferring to play an unfit Rooney, and even Nani up front on his own rather than Berbatov - I think it's pretty obvious that Hernandez could quite easily get priority over Berbatov!

I'm looking forward to seeing Hernandez and Macheda playing as much as possible next season. Not so much Berbatov.

Berbatov was bought to bring something to our team which the other forwards are unable to offer, and he still has it in him to do just that. He's lost his way a little bit in his first two seasons, but he'll need full backing to have any chance of regaining his confidence and form. Let's face it, there's little chance of him being sold, so we should just get behind him for the coming season. If he manages to, say, click with Hernandez up front, it might just work out for him after all.

Spot on.

People must be in serious denial if they don't think it would be a good idea to try and flog Berbatov and buy an Ozil or equivalent. We're becoming quite well stocked in the striking departments and the youngsters will not develop if we keep trying to give games to a thirty million pound flop rather than playing them.

Watching the World Cup brings to focus just how immobile Berbatov is. Many of the attacking players on show have been busy and involved in play (apart from the French and ironically enough, Rooney). And as United have an ethos of attacking with pace and vigour, it remains to be seen exactly what Berbatov can ever bring to United.
I was thinking about Chile's attack minded 4-3-3 formation all based on speed and penetration and comparing that with Berbatov's languid demeanour. Chile's coach Bielsa would go loco if he ever had to manage Berbatov.

Here is something to consider. Why go for the likes of Ozil, when we actually have Dimitar?! SAF could try and change his role a bit, and play him just behind the strikers, Rooney and whomever else...

So now we need to play a diamond to accomodate Berbatov. Bye bye Nani and Valencia.

Berbatov played Ozil's role for Germany in his first season at United. SAF decided it was a mistake to do that, so dont expect to see it again anytime soon.

because ozil is younger, quicker, more dynamic, not a workshy bulgarian.

Fair play, but he is not an United player. Btw, Bulgarians are known for their hard work, shame we got an exception to the general rule.

What I meant is not a constant formation with him behind the strikers, but when it makes sense. For example:

---Hargreaves ---- Fletcher----

Valencia ---Berba --- Nani

----------Rooney------------

or :D

-----------Essien------------

Valencia -- Berba----Nani

----Rooney----Hernandez----

Anyway, it will be interesting to see how SAF sets the formations if Berba is still around after the summer.

We played :

---Fletcher ---- Carrick----

Ronaldo --Berbatov -- Giggs

----------Rooney----------

In Berbatov's first season. At the end of which, Sir Alex apologised for making a "mistake" playing him there.

Dont get me wrong, I suggested we play Berbatov behind two strikers in his first season here as Rooney lacked support and goal contribution from him, so often. But the truth is, to have that player in the hole and 2 strikers in front of him, you have to play a diamond. And we're Manchester United the kings of width and wingplay. So not for us.

Very true. I am trying to figure out what the formation will look like with everyone healthy, fingers crossed, and Berba still in the fold. I have a feeling that SAF will stick with Berba if he doesn't sell him and start easing Hernandez into the 1st team gradually.

I hope we get rid of Berbatov. He has very little to offer to United. We need bright talents that have fresh ideas. Not a stale one that's lumbering his way into his third season with us still trying to bring his 'real' form to us.

Berbatov is staying with United as the two teams linked with Berbatov won't be coming for him now. Bayern would be mad to take Berba when they have Muller and as to Milan I think they will go after Dzeko.

Long shot is Wolfsburg buying Berba but only if Dzeko moves.

So getting the best out of Berba will be SAF challenge once again - third time lucky?

Wouldnt surprise me at all, although personally I hope its not the case. I'd like to see us give Hernandez and Macheda lots of oppertunities next season and as early as possible. Maybe they'll kick on and start producing on a regular basis. Or perhaps Berbatov will show some form to fight for his place.

One thing in Berbatov's favour though is that Hernandez plays a lot like Owen. And Sir Alex has said he sees Owen and Rooney as the same sort of striker. So it might be that its mostly Rooney/Hernandez/Owen + Berbatov. Not entirely sure what he'd consider Macheda... But probably in the same first category. Which makes everything look rosy for Berbatov...
