Dimitar Berbatov | 2009/10 Performances

Bottom line is this. Sell Berbatov this summer and make some money, or let him see out his contract. He's going to be 30 and after that the only team that might want him is AC Milan since they have their "Milan Lab".

If we could even get 12 - 15 million for him it would be a good move to get rid

Dont get me wrong, I've had my fair share of hair torn out over Berbs' lack of success but I have to say, this little tidbit in this article did pique my interest...

Manchester City v Manchester United: if Dimitar Berbatov had chosen blue, Carlos Tévez would be an Old Trafford icon - Telegraph

Yet despite Tevez’s heroics at Eastlands, which have breathed new life and charisma into City, Ferguson maintains he does not regret losing the player.

“I’ve got no regrets at all.” Ferguson insists. “None whatsoever. We tried to buy him, but we didn’t match the money they [Tevez’s economic rights holders] wanted, therefore the boy moved on.

“There is no bitterness for me. Players leave here, some do well, some don’t. You just have to move on.”

At the suggestion of City supporters, Tévez will be honoured by a pre-match airing of the Prodigy’s Firestarter on Saturday. Ferguson might even allow himself a rueful chuckle at that.

The only statistics that truly matter when comparing Tévez and Berbatov are the goals scored by each player. At 28-12 in Tevez’s favour this season, there is only one winner in that particular battle.

But Berbatov is not all bad. He creates a scoring chance for a team-mate every 39.5 minutes compared to Tevez’s one every 51.9 minutes, yet Tévez outscores Berbatov 7-4 in terms of assists for goals this season.

Ironically, despite the criticism directed his way, Berbatov has a greater chance conversion rate (19 per cent v 16 per cent) for United than Spurs. He also scores goals more regularly (one every 209 minutes as opposed to one every 212 minutes) for United.

While Tévez bemoaned his reduced involvement at United last season, which contributed to his tally of just five league goals, Berbatov has kept his own counsel on suggestions that he is being misused by United.

Playing as a lone striker does not suit the 29 year-old, yet Ferguson is unconvinced of the merits of pairing him with Wayne Rooney.

And the accusations of laziness also appear misplaced, with Berbatov’s perspiration heavily outweighing his inspiration in recent weeks.

I wish the public had access to this kind of stat, which is far more informative that the crass 'assist' stat, which relies on so many other variables, chief amongst which whether your centre forward can hit a cows arse with a banjo. Problem is the paper doesn't cite were the stats are even from. While Berbatov's stat is more productive and impressive there, it's not that much more impressive, and certainly doesn't make up the shortfall in scoring terms compared to Tevez

Same here mate. After the Blackburn game I really started to fear for him. He needs to pull a rabbit out of the hat to save himself now IMO.

Will he even get a chance? depending on the way results go tomorrow anything he does against Stoke or Sunderland may not mean a thing.

I think we should be looking to sell him to Milan this summer, the club are not in a position to let someone walk away for free, at least if we sold him this summer we'd recoup some money. the problem is where do we find a striker that can play with Rooney, can play wide/deep in a 4-3-3 and play up top alone if Wayne is injured? not an easy task.

"People have not seen the real Berbatov this season and I would have liked to have done more for the club.

"My dream is still to triumph with United and win another league title.

"At Spurs I have scored more goals with less problems and at United it has been more difficult.

"But I do not worry about the critics. In football it is harder to be a forward because people analyse errors more than success. My morale is high and I am always trying to overcome the situation."

One player who is definitely staying at Old Trafford is Paul Scholes.

The former England midfielder, 35, has signed a new one-year contract extension.

It was thought Scholes could be coming to the end of his United career but boss Fergie said: "We are delighted Paul is staying on for another year."

A title that really doesn't match the quotes, who writes the Sun anyway? Fleabitten monkeys?

If....and I think it's a big if, Berbatov plays today, then his attitude today will tell us exactly where the bloke is at. He, more than anyone, must realise what has been written and said about him in the press and on tv recently, and surely must be thinking it's time to show us what he can do. You would expect himself and Carrick to be chomping at the bit to play and really put on a huge display of will and desire, as both have had their fair share of criticism in the media of late.
Here's hoping to some magical displays then.......?

I'm not sure it's totally fair to compare Tevez's anger at being left out, with Berbatov's seemingly philosophical attitude.

They're just totally different characters and Tevez wears his heart on his sleeve, whereas Berbatov keeps his own counsel. And Tevez was left out after some good performances whereas Berbatov must recognise that his contribution has been somewhat lacking at times.

It shouldn't be a big if at all whether he plays today. In fact I'd go as far to say that if he DOESN'T play then Ferguson will in all likelihood be looking to move him on this summer. But a 30m pound front man who is uninjured and still part of his managers plans has to start today. Of course if he starts, that guarantees nothing, rather if he doesn't start, I'd say that would be pretty telling.

Also, there's no point looking for ammunition based on a comparison of the two players performances today. I don't care how Tevez plays, frankly. I am only interested in how Berbatov plays.

I don't think theres any chance of him playing today if Rooney is fit.

One thing is for sure, when SAF retires, his autobiography is going to sell an absolute shitload...so many secrets and stories that we can hopefully get to the bottom of, the Tevez saga being one of them.

When Tevez was here, if we had simply played a proper 4-3-3 with Tevez on the left, Ronaldo on the right and Rooney through the middle, it would have been an absolute joy to watch.

I think our persistence with 4-4-2 (or more 4-2-4 i suppose) limited the impact they could have made.

Not that we didnt win a lot of trophies, mind you.

So essentially, summary of what Dans has said:

If he starts it doesn't mean anything, it he's on the bench HE'S GONE. Don't compare him with ANYONE, it's not relevant whether he's better than the person he replaced.

Cool.
I think it would be pretty significant if he started and a sign Sir Alex has faith in him and plans for him next season. I don't think anyone can say it doesn't mean anything if he does start.

He can't play on the left. Only Rooney and Ronaldo were versatile enough to play in all three positions.

If he does play, I hope there's none of the nonsense there was last week. Especially if the game is still in progress.

-----Rooney----
Park Tev Ronaldo

This would have been killer. Too bad someone was always injured.

SharkyMcShark, not very sharpymcsharp.

If he doesn't play it's significant.

If he does, you lot should avoid creaming yourselves.

Its significant whether he plays or not. But not as significant as how well he plays if he does get a chance to start.
