Dejan Lovren

A lot of people are praising Neville's bit on De Gea this week but Carragher follows it up with some analysis of Lovren's defensive problems and he does a really good job. Lovren plays centre half liked a scared child. He hardly ever leaves Sktrel's side and exposes Moreno/Enrique to a lot of attacks. On Sunday we attacked down our right more than any other area and that isn't because we targeted Moreno's poor defensive ability, We were targeting Lovren's inability to fill space in behind the left back. Carragher showed that this isn't a new thing, Lovren did this at Southampton as well. Rogers must not watch video of goals scored against his team, because its an obvious and easy thing to fix, if Lovren has half a brain.

One interesting aspect was Neville owning Carragher completely by showing that the space between the centre half and the full back is hardly a new thing when it comes to Rodger's Liverpool.

Completely forgot that.... So basically Liverpool had the wool pulled over their eyes, yet again.
aye, they did. He got praise last season, maybe deservedly, but he's not a technically good defender and he's not a smart player.

Neville is by far the stronger pundit

How did he become so awful? He wasn't that bad at Soton surely?
His start to the season for Southampton was very good, up until say-January, and from then on the errors become more frequent but he was still an decent looking CB by the end of the season.

He doesn't care about those things, he just wants to know how good he is on the ball, if he dominates possession he will win 79% of the time and that's enough for him.

One of the reason's he looked so good at Southampton was also because he had Schneiderlin, Cork and Wanyama covering from midfield.

Not to forget Shaw was on top his game too. They are all defensively much more sound than Gerrard or Allen or Henderson.

He was considered brainless and mistake prone at Lyon. Those good six months at Southampton were the exception rather than the norm.

Yeah. Not long after he was made vice captain, which was a disaster given how much better we defended with Agger.

Had a very poor start. Though I do see the attributes of a good defender in him, though I may be in the minority here.

I thought he left because he couldn't keep himself fit?

He said that to the official site but after he left he said to Danish media that it was because of Rodgers. Said they didn't see eye to eye on a lot of things and Rodgers didn't include him even when fit (Sakho anyone?). Did also praise Rodgers' management though

I must admit, I got this wrong. I thought he'd be a very good signing for Liverpool. He looked pretty good for Southampton last season but he's been an absolute joke for the scousers. Comedy defending.

I don't see him having a future here. Even if he finds form, his bottomlevel is just too low.

I said it when they signed him. Hes a decent defender and a good footballer who last season benefited greatly from one of the best midfield's in the league at protecting their back four.

Compare Wanyama, Schneiderlin and Cork to what Liverpool have protected him with this season

None of Lambert, Lovren or Balotelli have futures here I think. The rest of our summer business should and I include Manquillo in that even if he is only on loan.

I worry that Can will simply not get chances to make a future here.

Didn't know that. Really weird from Rodgers.

From Carragher's analysis in MNF it seems he made positional errors at Soton too but was lucky and they didnt suffer much from it. It seems he's not completely aware of the surroundings, he's always looking ahead instead of covering ground. And looses his head a lot.
He was notorious for that in the NT too, always 'swimming' so to say, lost somehwere in the box instead of being able to defend and makes a penalty challenge or a foul for a red card, incident waiting to happen basically.

He has everything to be a good defender, everything but his head. :)

Shite penalty but at least he had the balls to step up for the 5th penalty (even if he shouldn't have been allowed).

He's been a disaster but it's not his fault we were deservedly knocked out tonight.

This is true.

you just knew he would miss. I am sad, wanted them to go through this round, now they have enough time to prepare against us
