Declan Rice

Look Sancho went for 75-80m and he’s an attacker. That should be our reference point. I personally think they’d deal at 50m + a player like Lindelof
Only kidding, lingard

Sancho is an attacking player with some of the best stats ever seen in the Bundesliga, a player with Rice's skillset shouldn't cost half of that.

Honestly mate, looking at the likes of Zaha I don't see a chance in hell of West Ham doing anything of the sort. They'd want 75m quid to release him this Summer, especially with England doing so well in the Euros.

We'll see how determined we are as a club, and whether Lingard is offered in part exchange, or given a new contract at United....

Lingard isn't gonna be worth much with his contract situation. He's 5 months away from signing a pre-contract with another club. I'd be surprised if we get 15m for him, unless we extend his contract.

The thought of this has ruined my day.

I like him, think he'd be a good fit for us, but I see figures at 80m, now seeing figures at 100m. At those numbers you have to draw a line and move on to other choices. If he was the final piece we needed, then maybe, but we've other areas we need to upgrade. Unless West Ham severely drop their price, I don't see any clubs splashing out 80 to 100 m on him.

I like Rice. But the potential fees are madness. If he went for £100m. Only 5 players in the history of the game would have gone for more. None since Covid.

He'll eventually go to a top English side but not this summer, I think. Too high an asking price with too long left on his contract. If he doesn't sign another contract though then the price will eventually start to drop to a more reasonable level, maybe even next summer. At 22 he can afford to wait.

Yep however the club still won't be able to play Lingard until next season regardless if he signs a pre-contract with another club in January.

Bringing in Lingard this summer will be vital to clubs like West Ham as they are in Europa League and will help their momentum and continue their challenge for a place in Europe again which he played an important role last season - £15m isn't unrealistic at all IMO.

Rice is already a better player than McT. Better passing and tackling % in a worse team. The thing is can you release Rice and get him to expand his game. What will he he offer when the shackles come off. That’s the most interesting part for me. I think he’s too safe on the ball and too static at the moment but he’s still doing a better midfield job than McT who is running around a lot and knocking in a few goals but not a lot of our good play or even solid defending is because of him. It’s very hard to pinpoint anything he does to a high standard apart from the goals. Maybe he has another level yet but I’m skeptical. Rice will be seen as the much better player by the time they finish up.

Which is why he won’t go for that. People need to think logically. WH obviously want to scare people off but realistically if he said he wanted to go a deal would be done for a more realistic price

Once again, that’s exactly what Zaha did and Palace had no interest in being nice, same with Sancho last season and Kane this.
West Ham hold too many cards at this point in his contract.

Zaha was critical to palace, no way anyone was paying 70m or whatever the rumoured fee was. Again if he’d kicked up a huge fuss and submitted a transfer request they would have had to deal at a realistic price. You don’t want to keep a player who desperately wants out.

Sancho last season? He went off the boil after he was priced out. I dare say they came to an agreement that it wouldn’t happen again. Secondly covid hit and Dortmund need money.

I’m sure WH probably need money to do business too. Secondly they are all forwards. No DM has ever gone for 100m. It’s not realistic nor logical. It’s a scare tactic. If he wants out and a club has enough budget left (not sure what we have) then it’ll happen and it won’t be 100m or any other paper figure

edit; forgot Kane. He’s a Wc striker. Someone will probably spunk close to that but maybe made up with cash + players. I’d be surprised, given his age and injury record that someone pays 100m cash

We’ll see on that, he’ll go nowhere for me because no-one will pay the minimum 70m WHU would demand.
As for ”critical”, he’s their skipper and if he’s as good as you say, he’s critical.
No-one puts in official transfer requests these days, hell Zaha has asked again to leave. No chance Rice is sticking in an official transfer request and kicking up a fuss, not on your life.

I think it can be better spent than £90m odd for rice. Assuming we don’t have unlimited transfer funds it’s in my interest that we use it in a prudent way.
I haven't seen £90m quoted. that is insane but still no idea why it's in your interest...

Fair to assume Lingard can still be key to getting a deal done?

We won’t really miss Lingard that much so part exchanging him is like a free discount.

I think this was discussed a while back but at this point, taking into account his Euro performances, what would WHam accept (as opposed to what we should pay):

Lingard Plus 20m, 30m, 40m, 50m..?

I think they’d take JL plus £40m.

Didn’t see this one. You think JL plus £75m will be required?

Would love to sign him but I think we would need to shift a few out and also recoup some money. Won't be cheap.

This Summer, with England going to the semis and what all that entails with the regular English player tax, I don’t see any chance of WHU doing any deal for their captain unless it’s a “almost too good to be true deal”, which I’d imagine is around 75m quid all in.
Similar to how Palace have acted with Zaha or how Dortmund acted with Sancho last Summer.
No-one will offer that deal of course so he’ll be there for another season at least.

So that’s Lingard plus £40m right? :)

They've turned down pretty big offers from Chelsea previously haven't they? He hasn't gotten any cheaper since

Sancho wanted to leave last year and it didn’t happen because the price wasn’t realistic. So it’s also depending on the club not just the player.

Rice’s contract is up to 2024 plus 1 year extension to 2025. They have enough power to ask for big fees when a player is on 4 years contract. If none pay, they can hold him for another season.

Do you think Rice will tell West Ham, I won’t play because you are not letting me go? I doubt it.

Dortmund knew what a position they held last year, what was the point of “doing a deal” then when they knew they could keep him for another season and get a similar price this Summer.
Hence last Summer their stance was “pay us silly money or he stays”, why on Earth anyone thinks West Ham wouldn’t do similar, especially after a Euros, I don’t know.

I’m not saying he won’t play.

but he can go to the owners and say this is a real opportunity for me and I want to go

And why can’t the owner tell him to stay unless if a club is paying what they want and Rice has no choice but to respect his contract?

Why does everybody talk in this thread like we are even trying to sign him?

As far as I can see we aren’t even linked are we?

This really means nothing when you think of their roles though - I'd assume being in a worse team actually probably helps some of his defensive stats as they are much more defensive and structured than United. McT is probably the easiest upgrade in the starting XI and, even then, it's hard unless you are going to spend big. Same goes for Fred - who is actually playing really well for Brasil right now for what it's worth. It's easy for us to say x,y or z is better but are they actually? Unless you're landing a really top name, they probably aren't going to upgrade McFred (who I am not a fan of as a partnership just FYI) and I really don't think Rice is at the level we would expect if paying anywhere the near the quoted price.

We were. In was even reported he was asking Shaw & maguire what life is like at United,

I’m not quite sure why United fans wouldn’t be happy being linked to him. I genuinely do t get it.
is it the money? Cos they moan when it’s not spent as well. Is it the type of player? I’ve seen comments saying he can’t pass, which is a myth.
Is it because they only see him play for England? Then watch more footy

Just like Sancho and Zaha, and Harry Kane this Summer, and Harry Maguire after the WC.
He has a long contract and only a daft fee would make them sell, they may do a Sancho-esque deal with him and agree to a much more sensible price for next Summer if he still wants to leave.

It’s because I want us to have a midfield that can control and dominate games on the ball, and he’s simply not that player.
I want a Carrick, Pirlo, Busquets, Veratti, Scholes, Kroos, Kimmich, hell a Jorginho or Fabinho even dictating our play.

I have a nagging feeling Rice has a very high ceiling and we will start to see his game expand as he matures. Hopefully he doesn’t do a kane and keep signing deals if he’s actually interested in playing CL at some point. I wouldn’t be going near him for 80 but 50/60 and Jesse? It gives us tactical flexibility and the opportunity to develop an England stalwart throughout his career. I’d be ok with that. The current prices are completely off though. We could buy someone with as high of a ceiling from abroad for less than £40 million minus whatever we get from Jesse. It just depends on the scouting. If the data guys think a Rice is what the team is missing long term (and also from a leadership/longevity standpoint) then I’m more than happy to trust in the process these days.
