Declan Rice

I dunno but I think he does an absolutely massive job for England at closing down space. Yes they play negatively, but Rice being so good at what he does actually makes it very effective. You almost never see anyone run through the middle and have a go at the England defenders, largely due to Rice IMO. Chances generally come from mistakes or long balls bypassing Rice.

I agree. Some negative opinions in this thread as I reckon he does a great job in front of the defence.

Not worth some of the figures banded around for him but I’d be very happy to see him come to OT.

A big weakness of his is that he is so slow, it is almost painful.

Think he's the most over rated footballer in the country right now. Scott Mctomminay has more to his game than him and I'm not joking.

I thought he was good, there’s so much maturity in his game. Yet I can understand the scepticism here because for Southgate he’s clearly playing a role and almost within himself.

He has been thoroughly outshone by Phillips so far this tournament.

I thought it was the usual. Fulfils that role perfectly in terms of what Southgate wants, solid, worked tirelessly, laid it off to team mates, most of the time in a very simplistic way, sometimes ignoring a more direct option. But that doesn't seem to really correlate with what we perhaps need or expect.

That's pretty much it. He's not a bad footballer. Just a very average one that's touted for crazy money.

The counter argument I guess is that if he's a very solid but limited DM and you pay 70M for him but he does that job for 10 years, it's not terrible value. Basically, is he as good as a Didier Deschamps was , because you probably would be happy to pay 70M for him in today's dollars as a 22 year old and have his next 10 years of boring DM play.

Ideally your defensive midfielder should have a decent passing range. Rice doesn't have it.

Yeah, he's a good prem footballer, he's not a world class DM or midfielder, which is what you'd expect for what they're asking.

He’s good but not as good as many people make him sound. Definitely not the one we should be going all out for, for me.

It all depends on the setup and the club’s goals though. I think he’s top 4 material (which is what we are as a club right now), but if we’re hoping to challenge for the league and possibly the CL eventually, we should be aiming higher.

Well, if you are asking him to cover the space and defend , he will do all day long. The problem is his ability on the ball. When we are paying 60m + we need that ability on the ball as well.

I would be extremely disappointed if United were to sign him. Luckily it seems like West Ham have priced him out of a move. Boring player with a weak passing range.

Absolute downgrade on McT. I don't know whether it's because of the English/Scottish thing but he is West Ham level.

Our fans tend to think players for other teams are better than what we have all the time and often that doesn't turn out to be true when they sign.

He's playing within himself for England, feel like Southgate is limiting him a bit. Still has been massively key to our success so far.

Although he's not worth what West Ham would want for him.

Can’t agree with this, he’s just playing a much more restrictive role. Clearly been asked to protect the defence and nothing more, where Phillips has license to get involved with the attack more.

But yeah I’d pretty much agree with the sentiment that he’s good, but not worth the money touted.

There's a reason why Rice is never asked to do more than this, surely.

Did ok in the end today but Utd shouldn’t be going anywhere near him, don’t need another midfield who is so limited on the ball, already have two starting too often.

Not sure why he gets compared to Mctominay so much as very different type of player. Rice is much better as a holding player but would be worse as a box to box player. West Ham would probably be a good level for both Rice and Mct, neither are good enough for Utd.

Except there's really been no glimpses of anything more he can provide.

At one point today, I think it was Sterling (may have been Trippier) pulling his hair out as Rice failed to see that if he moved up a few yards he was well positioned to receive a simple square pass and advance England right into the heart of the German defence. Reminded me of Schneiderlin.

He is not a player we should be basing our midfield on.

I think that if Rice was quoted at £30m-£45m, the critique of him would not be the same. As he's got some astronomical pricetag, everything he does is assessed through that lens, and he's absolutely miles off a valuation like that. £80m on a defensive midfielder should get you a Verratti calibre player, which Rice simply hasn't got it in him to be.

I kind of feel for him because he's dogged, dependable and works as hard as he possibly can for his team, but not much of that matters when he's been scrutinised as a player in tier he cannot be considered in as everything he doesn't do is examined to the Nth degree whilst a lot of the good things he does get downplayed somewhat.

Having said that, for the kind of money he'd cost, he's very underwhelming indeed.
