Surprised you didn't have Xabi in your plans. Thought he would have been a half decent Scholes replacement and was worried till your turn.

I though you were talking about him but I struck him down early on as Liverpool/Bayern. Fits a half decade solely at Real but, frankly, my gut doesn't rate that as Xabi at the peak of his powers (although it arguably is).

Again, I want to use big countries and clubs for proper marquee players or else just leave them spare. Doesn't make it a more competitive team, but certainly one I like better.

There's no clear/tangible way you could turn it around either. That's where, for all its defficiencies, spoils of war reinforcements keep things wide open throughout.

Aye, that first Chain Draft was great. Might be worth revisiting that again. I don't see an issue with reinstating the spoils of war idea for the occasional draft either. There's pretty much always a draft going on so it would freshen things up if nothing else.

Risky as feck, particularly once Pirri went as he was my backup plan and my backup backup plan was the 20-23 guy. I'll probably pick him anyway as I would like the option of bringing him on at CM to close out games with two upfront (not that in-game management gets any attention).

You guys know why he is called Captain of Captains, right? Some players arrived at Peñarol having been captains at their previous team, some were captains of other NTs while playing with Tito as their club captain, even more graduated into captains for club and country after leaving the club. Can't start listing names in a draft, but Don Elías is an obvious one.

If they weren't leaders already, he made them so, but never ever, not even for a moment were any of them under any illusion that Tito wasn't The Boss. It's easy to lead when surrounded by sheep, now leading leaders... that's something entirely different.

You guys know why he is called Captain of Captains, right? Some players arrived at Peñarol having been captains at their previous team, some were captains of other NTs while playing with Tito as their club captain, even more graduated into captains for club and country after leaving the club. Can't start listing names in a draft, but Don Elías is an obvious one.

If they weren't leaders already, he made them so, but never ever, not even for a moment were any of them under any illusion that Tito wasn't The Boss. It's easy to lead when surrounded by sheep, now leading leaders... that's something entirely different.

Where do you rank him in the all time South American defensive midfielders list?

Zito/Clodoaldo/Goncalves/Cerezo/Dunga/Redondo/Mauro/Mascherano/Casemiro. Not sure if I should add Cambiasso and Someone in there as I consider them more defensive B2Bs.

Thought we all agreed the rule was a bit of a nonsense. Don't think the odd table/photo going amiss has been an issue, more the skipping and table format feckups

I can see the Simeone exclusion, not Cambiasso when you have Redondo there.

I'm not a huge fan of ranking players. Think they are usually complete nonsense actually. Leaving aside the times players played in (tactics, conditioning, etc) the context is also very much relevant. That Peñarol side was best served with Tito. Redondo isn't the right fit, Zito would have done a suboptimal job, Dunga the most similar one.

For starters I'd split that into DMs with or without DLP capabilities, then whether you need to emphasise defence or playmaking, whether you are the dominant team or hand over the initiative... How much ground is there to cover all by yourself or as part of a more organised defensive unit?

I can see a reason I would resort to some of those over another in different contexts and situations, so how on earth do you rank that? Personally, I'd strike off most of that list and have 3, or maybe 4 at a push, as the bunch that would be the preferred go-to set / rotation options.

I would have Gonçalves in that three, yes. The guy oozed class. You watch the games against River or Real and it's man against boys. The extent to which he shines through as more confident, commanding and in control is absolutely insane considering you have people like Gento at the other end, bereft of ideas and looking like Nani having an off game.

If anyone is ever in any doubt of what imposing yourself on a game looks like, there's Exhibit 1, seeing as there's scant footage of the mythical exhibit to end all exhibits (Varela at Maracana, my grandfather was there, and at another 10 World Cups).
