De Gea contract talk | Signs new deal

Top keeper, top wages. No problem.

Flog Sanchez and our wage bill will be back to normal.

doesn't work like that, the next big name we sign is going to say "hey you paid Sanchez this and are paying a goalkeeper that, I want more than them". I'm sure Pogba is already saying this. De Gea is a top keeper and has been for yrs, but the Sanchez one is difficult to justify. It sets a dangerous precedent. One you start fulfilling these outrageous wage demands it will quickly become the norm for any new signing.

Won't lie, I feel a bit similar to others in that it sets a precedent that no other clubs seem to have to do, but I'm over the moon about keeping him and I did always say we should do whatever it takes. It also sets the precedent that we're still a club where world class players reside.
Ronaldo and Messi sign new contracts for more money about once a year. It’s only because it’s United that you pay more attention
.

No issue with the money - all power to him. Do everything we can to keep him - it's nuts to not do so. I'm just surprised he wants to stay.

As Ferguson once said, you don't mind the real top players earning the top wages available. It's the bloody average to crap players earning big money pisses people off (and we've got plenty in this squad already).

Deserves every single penny of it. Easily our best performer in the past 6 years

Still have no idea why people are moaning.

If we replacing him it’s going to cost around £70m or more for someone like Oblak. Then not forget the prices being touted around for average keepers like Pickford.

I’m probably swearing in church, but he’s not undisputed top 3 in the world for me at the moment, probably won’t be again the way football has developed. Speaks to our desperation as money is our biggest draw now.

Classic Woodward.

Now solve the actual problem or De Gea will be earning 1m in 3 years.

If there is a player in our team that deserves whatever amount of money we pay to him, it's De Gea. Reliable, consistently good, top professional. When the move to Real broke down, he could have done what Courtois did. Refuse to train, hand transfer request etc but instead he just moved on if nothing happened. That's the sort of players you want in the team, not cry babies, and they fully deserve to be rewarded.

There’s not a better shot stopper in football right now, his distribution is not the best but show me a keeper that doesn’t have weaknesses.

He is without doubt top 3, I’d argue he’s the best.

He's having a rough season, while still pulling off outrageous saves. You might have noticed the entire team is shite this season and it's been pretty confirmed his god-tier peformances last season are the reason we pulled off such a high finish.

He's easily in the top three. Still probably top two.

Nothing the sun writes is worth taking seriously.

I hope that the only factor is wages. If so give him whatever he wants to stay here. Never thought I would talk about wanting a goalkeeper to be highest player at a club. But Dave has proved in my opinion many times over that he is worth the money.

Why are you guys taking anything written by that rag seriously? No other source have reported it.

A keeper is still a keeper, as good as he is. That is mucho money. Too much actually. No other team would offer that.

@Minimalist and @JinnerJamie Yeah, I know he’s great, world class without a doubt. His style, however, isn’t modern, he very rarely sweeps, which could of course be down to the low defensive line we apply, but he doesn’t do it, even when he should. His commanding of the area isn’t a weakness, it’s a handicap.

Very few sweep.
I keep seeing the progressive manager argument being brought up but neither Chelsea / Liverpool / Spurs or Arsenal use their keeper to build from the back or play sweeper.
Modern keeper capabilities are widely overblown on here

He could stop playing right now and he'd still easily be our best player of this decade. He's earned whatever contract he's given.

Pay Dave whatever he wants, who cares. He's worth it and honestly he's earned it, this is nothing like the situation of inflated wages for Sanchez etc.

The alternative of losing him on a free and then signing a worse replacement for a huge fee who will also be on huge wages doesn't make any sense.

It is overpaying because he already is the highest paid keeper in the world.

But money is literally the only thing we have to offer as a club I guess. We can't even pretend that our players are here because they believe in the 'project'

Who makes your top three?

Well we need to overpay. Otherwise we let him go on a free and overpay for another GK. So I rather keep DDG rather than doing that.

Yes of course, I agree. But this situation is the club's own doing.

If you're unable to offer anything but money (i.e. match their trophy winning ambitions, or constantly throw them under a bus) you'll always have to negotiate from a position of weakness.

Its not new thing about posters in here and regardless of this being true or not, i understand reaction but is it me or people turn weird when it comes to amount of money for transfers/wages. Since SAF retired, people were shouting how club should give whatever DDG wants but suddenly some random number is dropped and people pulling breaks with "Woah woah, hold on a minute..."

I wouldn’t demand sweeping like Neuer, but I’d like him to be much more aggressive, it’s holding him back somewhat imo.

This is bullshit. A bonus is not something that will definitely be paid so how can someone say what his wage will be after bonuses? It's clearly the media's way of reporting a new United contract. Other players don't have their bonuses factored in. It's simply something they are doing because it's United, similar to the shenanigans with Sanchez.

Fixed.
