De Gea contract talk | Signs new deal

If there are no buyers (I don't think there is - PSG perhaps), then I'd rather he run his contract down and play for a big payday at another club than use Romero as our #1.
Romero has done ok when called upon, but I think there is a genuine reason why he's not moved for more regular football, and that is perhaps a lack of interest. He's pulled out some good saves but he's also been found wanting on more than a few occasions. Personally, I don't think he is the answer - even if DDG goes.
I think DDG will be back to his best next season and with a bit of luck, we can find a team/formation/system that will match his ambitions and he may well stay.

Exactly, apparently he's allowed to be the only reason why we finished in a higher league position the last few years but he cannot be one of the main reasons we finished in a lower league position this year.

Very true, easily one of our worst players this season.

We can’t afford to loss him for free next summer. If he is not going to renew it this summer, then better just sell him. We can’t let him keep dragging us on contract talk, he is already the best paid keeper in the world, there’s nothing else we could do to make him stay. If he has any decency for this club, he should ask for transfer formally, then at least we could receive a fee. We need a lot of money to rebuild this squad ffs.

He has been worldclass keeper and saves us plenty of time over the years. But last season he was in really bad form and I don’t think new keeper could do any worse.

Have a feeling he will run his contract down..

If he hasn’t signed a new contract by the beginning of the season or has rejected transfers away due to wanting to leave on a free next summer, then I hope we relegate him to the reserves and he doesn’t get even one minute of competitive club football for a whole year.

We need to have a hard line approach to make other players realise that if they run their contracts down they will waste a whole year of their career.

It won't happen, we need him too much to do that if we don't buy another keeper in the mean time.

This is what will happen I fear. But I hope I'm wrong and we can get a transfer fee for him.
Then we should be tough as well and tell him he will be only 2nd choice next season. Based on his form, it would be justified as well

We have always looked after De Gea. Surely he would not just stay and let his contract run out.

Not entirely up to him. If there aren't any clubs making an offer for him he doesn't really have a choice but to let his contract run out if he wants to leave. And it looks like he does.

If he’s still here I think that’s a decision you take during pre-season. The keepers will all get their chances. The No.1 spot needs to go to whoever has the best form going into the new season.

Yes, I know talks have broken down and he wants to leave, but PSG seem interested, but is he just staying for spite.

What sort of revisionism is this? Because of his poor form last season? Come on man. You can say better...

I actually kind of agree.

Excellent shot stopper, the very best.

But I think the defence gets a lot of flack due to his shortfalls. He isn't commanding enough and he NEVER ever leaves his line, be that on crosses or through balls.

Do you think Jones and Smalling etc would be as bad with a VDS or Big Pete behind them? I genuinely don't as they would have the keeper commanding them and keeping them on their toes.

If we show some real ambition in this transfer window then he might agree to stay. Re-signing Young, Jones, possibly Mata etc hardly inspires confidence we will achieve that though.

I dont think Ole has the balls to drop him.

LVG dropped him to the bench and he ended up signing a new contract. Short term pain for long term gain?

Yes, easily, because they arent good defenders. Goalkeepers dont direct defenders from 25m behind, its the CB that sets the line and organizes the defekte. A great CB would improve the defekte, å more vocal goalkeeper will change feck all, its not magically going to improve out cb's. It's not youth football with 11 year olds on the pitch

Thats hardly what happened. He only signed a new contract because the Real Madrid deal collapsed

I'm surprised there hasn't been more vocal interest from Real.

Zidane doesn't rate Courtous, and Navas looks like he is leaving.

I could only see DDG leaving for Real in truth.

Interest must have dropped based on last season's form. I think he peaked and all clubs know that, hence we should sell him this summer

Madrid maybe see other positions as a priority.

I can see United hawking him around to clubs if he doesn't sign any time soon. No way will they want to risk losing him on a free.

A few bad games doesn't make him a bad keeper tho? he's still the best in the prem!

Short sighted thinking but you may be right

Honestly, I think he has peaked and on top, not sure he wants to be here really. That's why a move would probably be best for him and United. His demands are crazy anyways

A fair point but how do you explain why he makes the same mistakes for Spain with the likes of Pique, Ramos and Azpilacueta in front of him?

Good one.

First of all, De Gea has always looked worse playing for Spain than he has playing for United.

Secondly, Spains general defending is awful and it has been like that for a long time, there's a reason Pique has retired from the NT and Ramos isn't far behind.

That is precisely my point, u can't blame the likes of Jones and Smalling for him playing poorly for Spain.

Doesn't seem like he is going to sign. He'll either be sold this summer or leave on a free next year. There has been some talk about Donnarumma in Italian papers. He's my first choice to replace David if he goes. I wanted Oblak but his clause is so high we can forget it. Also Donnarumma only turns 21 next February and there's tons of potential in him. He'd be the first on my list if I was OGS.

Where is anyone blaming Jones and Smalling for De Gea not playing well for Spain ?

R u messing?

I was simply making the point that the 'terrible defenders' excuse doesn't really stack up when he is playing terribly for Spain also.

It's a shit point.

If you're in the business of making shit points instead of having a relevant debate, then by all means.

I don't think you even have a clue what you're actually debating.

Do not think he's moving to real Madrid this summer, they have too much to spend elsewhere, jovic, hazard, pogba/ndombele etc. Only destination I see him moving to is PSG or Juventus. And Juventus look like they are buying every player possible but cant afford to. He'll probably be here next season and after his first save, we'll be calling him the best in the world again.

Spanish national team's defenders > Man Utd's defenders.

Was a fairly simple point really.
