Jesus christ Pogue, yes i mentioned his contract in my initial post, i didn't mention his contract when i said the 'just let him go' post. I was talking about if we decided to keep him for his final year because i don't believe he will sign a new contract.

Well then we both see things panning out the same way. I just found your post about not understanding why people want him to sign a new contract a bit odd. If I wake up to headlines tomorrow about him signing a new deal I'd be delighted. I assumed everyone would feel the same.

Its bugger all but no point in keeping someone who doesn't want to be here.
it's still in his best interests to play to a high standard though, especially with EURO 2016 coming up. He'll still want Real to take him.

He may not want to stay but I don't think we should give him the choice, not for £20m.

I have finally given up on De Gea. He has been playing in the last couple of games like he doesn't care anymore. He know he is going to Real Madrid.
What surprises me is how fecking stupid he is. Posting that "Proud to be a red" tweet a couple of weeks ago when he already knew he wasn't going to be a red for a very long time.

I truly hate him as a person.

Bit harsh, surely. Even if you think he doesn't really care anymore, to hate him as a person when he often comes across as being fairly likable is a bit extreme.

Well i don't want a player here who would rather be somewhere else, especially a keeper who needs to be 100% on the ball so to speak.
Plus even if he did sign a new contract, we would just have this same bullshit every year with Real or Barca etc.

If it was that low I couldn't see the club selling him though, surely? Better to keep him for another year. 20m is bugger all to us really.

It's still a lot of money, though. Especially for a keeper. Would get us a top class replacement. The bean counters just need to decide whether a potential drop in team achievements/revenue due to replacing him with someone else next season would cost us more than that sum of money.

Not to mention that we'd have to suck up that potential downside regardless in 12 months time, in return for no income at all.

We're bigger than that though. If a player doesn't want to play for us, despite our best efforts to convince him otherwise, we should let him leave. It's not like 20m is a terrible offer considering we have next to zero leverage.

Forcing him to stay would just lead to an unwanted distraction.

Would it really though?

Realistically who are we going to get anywhere close to the level of DDG for that price? Spurs would milk us dry for Lloris. Maybe Cech, but he's 33.

Yes keepers generally aren't as expensive as outfield players but top ones will still cost a fecking bomb in the modern transfer world.

Yeah, no way he's going to go for world class outfield player money.

This may seem ridiculous watching the performance and the investment but I think that Cristiano or Bale (my bet is Cristiano) will play at United next year , so it wouldn´t surprise me if United accepts De Gea´s exit and starts to use him to negociate.

Nah, you'll have all three at the Bernabeu next season.

While he's obviously a lot older, I don't think that should exclude him from being an option. VDS was pretty old when he came to us (similar to what Cech is now I think), but he still got about 5 or 6 superb years out of him. Providing Cech can continue to perform, I think he'd be an excellent option at (hopefully) a fairly similar level to De Gea.

I don't know enough about football outside the PL to have any idea who would replace him but there's bound to be some excellent keepers out there and very few keepers cost that kind of money. Lloris and Cech both cost a lot less, for example.

I don't think there's a chance we'll get Ronaldo, but us using Bale to negotiate if De Gea does want to go is a possibility.

That's the thing. He lures everyone into liking him saying he's proud to be a red and acting as a wannabe agent and all that stuff. Then, deep inside, he doesn't give a shit about the fans and just wants to go to Real Madrid.

Meh, it's the way the majority of footballers are these days. It doesn't make him an awful person, unless you want to write off half of our squad as being terrible people considering many of them would do the exact same thing if they were good enough. Plus, we don't know for definite that he will leave, even if it seems quite likely.

I think he "lured" fans into liking him by being really fecking good at football, and nothing else.

No, he comes off as a likeable person by doing all that "agent" stuff, being very friendly to the fans in interviews and posting shit about how proud he is to be a United player just to get that extra bit of appreciation by the fans before fecking off to Real.

That last bit is what really makes me pissed. Judging by everything except for the fact that he hasn't signed a new contract, one would believe that he was going to stay at Man United for the rest of his career as a top goalkeeper. The fact that he hasn't signed, while players like Smalling has, means only one thing; He is looking for a transfer to Real Madrid and he's going to force himself there.

I do hope that as soon as the season ends he addresses it and at the very least gives us some kind of indication. It's been hanging over us for too long and has gotten annoying.

I know, right? He's just the worst.

If DeGea is asked about the current situation and he says "only god knows......", at least we will know its over and where he's going.:D

Yeah, it's turning into one of those extended sagas. Expect it to continue over the entire summer, with a deadline day resolution.

Cech might be the answer if De Gea leaves. Don't think Chelsea would stand in his way and it would be a great move for him. Wasn't he in the PFA team of the year recently so he is still pretty good?

Aye, he's still quite good. Unlucky in that Chelsea were buying Courtois who's much younger and already great but will last for longer. I'd think we could potentially get some good years out of Cech.

Can't see it going on that long considering both teams would prefer to know early on if they're going to need a new GK or not.

True, although these things are never smooth.

Can't see Cech happening

You can keep Cristiano, Just give us Bale and we can stop hating Madrid.

Lots of negativity towards DDG here.
I put myself in his shoes.

I started my career at United and after a season or so of being number 1 choice the club wanted to cash in on me and sold me to Juve to replace Buffon.
I played for Juve for 3 or 4 years and developed into one of the best in the world.
After 4 years the girl i love is still in Manchester and she doesnt want to leave her commitments behind and City were trying to lure me away. I would sign for City. I will still earn more money than sense whilst being able to settle down with the girl i want. Then i would play for City. If it meant giving my relationship the best chance to blossom.

If we take a step back and be honest, some things are more important.
