Its basically a Ronaldo situation here again. Actually i've never mentioned this on here but speaking to someone who worked in finance at the time of the sale, she told me that one day £80m just appeared in the clubs bank account. This was because Madrid had called up SAF/Gill and said we'll pay £80m for Ronnie, they said we want sight of the funds, so Real just transferred all the money into Utd's account without any formal agreement at all!!!
God damn it! We should have just said nothings been transfered and hung up. That way we keep the money and Ronaldo... Jeez thanks David Gill :(

Not sure how the 80mill in the bank story works because the original deal when it was struck was originally going to be 20mill a year broken down over the next 4 years, it was only after he left that Madrid restructured and paid the lot in one lump.

Hopefully we're on the cusp of something really special; I see De Gea staying personally and seeing how it goes. Exciting times ahead if we nail down CL football and carry on this vein of form.

I can't think of many occasions where they haven't since Milan faded.

Neymar, Ribery and Lewandowski are examples. Neymar and Lewa only wanted to join Barca and Bayern.

With Ribery Real tried their best to get him (I also though they would get him at that time) with their famous announcement that they will sign the best player from every top league (Ronaldo PL, Kaka Serie A, Benzema L1, Ribery Bundesliga), but Bayern played hard ball and kept Ribery. In the end he had his best career moments after that at Bayern, signed a new contract and will probably end his career there. Things can move fast in football, we shouldn't show any interest in selling him to Real, even if he doesn't sign a new contract. Try everything to get him signed and if not, keep him till 2016, which would give us even more time to convince him and try Valdes, look for another goalkeeper etc..
We should make Real clear that we don't need their money. If he signs the contract, then we should give them no chance at all.

Just repeating what i was told but tbf, them choosing to pay £80m up front after we had agreed to £20m a season for 4 years doesn't make sense either.

We're getting off topic though, sorry.

It was just the story you would hear coming from sources in the Spanish and British papers, before the final deal was struck and he officially left, that it would be 20mill installments, (IIRC), soon after he left, United announced Madrid have agreed to pay the deal in one lump, so it would depend on the accuracy of paper reports, some like say Marca would possibly more believable about Madrids original intentions on the payment, than probably many of our own papers, but yea... the installment thing was being repeated for a long while until the United announcment post sale.

Anyway as you say we're going offtopic, personally think De Gea will not be here next year if Madrid push hard come this summer (they will), and honestly surprised so many on the Caf are in high spirits over the potential outcome of this.

The report, on afternoon show Jugones, has also claimed that a poor relationship between Louis van gaal and his goalkeeper is one of the principal reasons for the Spaniard opting to up sticks and return to his homeland.

So that pretty much confirms that Journo is full of shit.

Thought it wasn't complete crap until I read the claim that the relationship between the two is one of the deciding factors. Who is this guy anyway? Never heard of him, has he ever called anything before?
He is a journalist who runs a very popular football TV show in Spain at midnight. He is a journalist pro Madrid. All this is being said weeks ago but hadn´t seen it in English press. I do not know if Mirror is credible. I don´t think it's a matter of bad relationships.

I think he'll be gone come the summer. Hopefully Valdes can slot in comfortably while we look for a long-term replacement.

If he does leave this summer then...well he's shown complete inconsideration to the club and fan base who have stuck by for the past few years when he was getting slaughtered in the press. I wonder how the Atletico fan base will react to him joining Real?

Why are people dismissing the 'poor relationship' with LvG?

I mean, it might be true. Probably isn't, but it might...

True. But I suppose it's his right to ply his profession where he chooses to - he has no obligation to stay an Man Utd.

The thing I'll find most interesting if he does go there, is how it affects his performances - if at all.

He's a top keeper, but many many a top player has gone to Real Madrid and regretted it...

It might, but I find it hard to imagine what they could even fall out over...

I mean, de Gea isn't an outfield player, so his position hasn't been affected. He's been played constantly since van Gaal's arrival, so he can't issues about that.

He would spend most of his time training with the GK coach, rather than training with van Gaal.

He's also been praised regularly by van Gaal.

It just doesn't seem very likely to me that they've fallen out.

De Gea himself said they were lies when it first surfaced a couple of months ago.

“Everything that has been written in the press about us not getting on is a lie,” he said.

“We both want the best for the club and the team, and the stories are complete lies.”

“I think this is the best period of my career.”

“I am playing the best football that I’ve ever played. I’m really enjoying it at the moment and I’m just trying to improve with every training session and every game that goes by, giving 100% and concentrating to the maximum. That’s the way I want to continue.”

if he leaves, sure He will not be so loved and respected as in Manchester, or at least will cost many years. He would replace the most popular player in the country. The renewal offer from Manchester is good, He can see that the team invested to play in Europe every year, also he has a group of Spanish in the team, so I think the problem from the beginning has been Edurne and family issues. Difficult to understand in professional footballers, but understandable at the highest level when they can actually afford to choose where and when

Fair do's

Still think he'll be off anyhow. Maybe I'm a tad cynical, but I don't see why he'd turn Madrid down if they come knocking. Also, the fact that he's still not signed-on is very, very telling.

LVG could have confiscated his pack of Kryspy Kreme Dunkin Donuts.

Sorry mate but this is rubbish. He will be leaving because he is Spanish.

But it has happened with Beckham, Ronaldo, and Nistelrooy too. Real do tend to just take who they please, even from us.

We wanted to sell Beckham and Ruud, only Ronaldo was a player we didn't want to sell. This actually puts a bit of doubt on whether or not Real always get who they want.

For me, that is more likely to mean "wait and see" - as in wait and see if we get CL. My guess is we do, he extends, but so leaves a season or two after

We wanted to sell RvN and Beckham.

The only player we did not want to sell to Real Madrid was Ronaldo and they paid a great sum for him.

We also managed to keep Ronaldo for a season longer than what Real wanted.

I don't want him to leave but if he does I hope we're able to get a decent amount of cash and a good replacement.

They only took Ronaldo.. Ferguson wanted to move on those other players.

SAF Sold Beckham and Ruud like @SirAF says and Ronaldo wanted to leave. De Gea has not in anyway expressed that he wants to leave or will be leaving for that matter.

personally I am getting fed up with this whole saga.

As much as I love De Gea he needs to come out and make a commitment one way or another. All we can do is speculate at the moment and its driving me crazy. If he wants to stay, great. Sign a new contract and get on with it. If he wants to leave so be it, lets see if Woody can wrangle a few of those Madrid players in return (not Bale or Ronaldo, I'm thinking of a certain RB and CB).

No player is bigger than the club, wish De Gea would show us fans a bit of respect and commit to a decision so that we can get on with it

He 's obviously not going to sign a new contract with us still not certain of getting top four. That's not being disrespectful, just sensible.

Unnecessary drama. Its quite evident that discussions are on but he's not willing to commit yet for whatever reason. Even if nothing happens till the summer, the picture will be clear then. I just don't understand how a contract issue can be such an issue especially given how tight things still are in the league. Yes, he's a superb player and its vital that he stays but its evident that things are going on in the background and not in public, its better that way though. Just have patience.

I reckon we'll hear something in the week after Champions League qualification is guaranteed (IF it's achieved so as to not tempt fate!). If he definitely wanted to go then Madrid would be spinning this deal like crazy already, but there's only the odd speculative report so far (the major one so far being that his girlfriend thinks Manchester is scruffy FFS ) and we're already in mid-April.
I think if we qualify automatically in 3rd place or higher then he'll sign a new deal.

Basically confirms what we all already know, that Courtois is very good but De Gea is better.

Of course you also have to factor in the context that Courtois is playing in front of the most accomplished defence in the league, whereas De Gea spent the first half of the season compensating for an injury-ravaged shambles.

I just think at some point in the summer United will announce we've accepted a bid from Real, similar to the Ronaldo transfer that summer, DDG has probably already made his intentions clear behind the scenes to the club, the only thing I'm hopeful for is a gigantic world record fee for a goalkeeper from those c*nts.

I refuse to believe those kicking stats, he's like Paul Scholes most the time. Also those catch stats are impressive, he's absolutely bossed it this year in the air. I'm confident when he come out for the ball unlike previous years.

Best keeper in the world.

I imagine goal kicks are probably included in those stats.
