I'm not sure it's that clear cut - I'd say DDG has received loads more plaudits than Courtois on MOTD etc this season. To be fair to Courtois that's partly because he's not had anything like as much to do as our Dave!

I meant more historically. Although De Gea has been rightfully praised for his performances this season, he was lambasted in the past and that sticks in the minds of some people, who then think that his recent performances are just good form or him being overrated. I still hear people saying that he is bad when it comes to crosses or that he doesn't command his box/defenders, which is just not true anymore.

Courtois is absolutely brilliant and will fight it out with De Gea for best in the world at some point, but at the minute people wrongly assume he is miles better than De Gea.

Valdes has lavished praise on De Gea by insisting his new team-mate is the 'best goalkeeper in the world'.

feck the planet, he needs to be the best paid in the universe

They're not only wrong, they are badly mistaken. De Gea is comfortably the better keeper today.

Courtois is a fantastic goalkeeper and we'll have a De Gea v Courtois debate, much like the Messi v Ronaldo debate, for a long time.

No, I haven't forgotten about Neuer, but I see a "higher ceiling", so to speak, for De Gea and Courtois over the next decade.

It's a helluva lot of ceiling that you have picked up. Neuer is the best GK around and has been for some time. He's still 28.

DDG is top 3 but he's far from what Neuer offers.
I'd be pretty happy if he ends up just as good as Neuer.

David de Gea edging closer to signing new Manchester United deal as goalkeeper's contract talks move in right direction

Manchester United have moved a step closer to securing David de Gea on a new contract on the very day they confirmed the arrival of his new No 2 Victor Valdes.

United have handed Valdes an 18-month deal with the option of an extra year's extension and Old Trafford manager Louis van Gaal confirmed that the 32-year-old will slot in as the club's 'No 2' goalkeeper.

However it is the future of De Gea that is concerning many United fans and it is understood that United are now confident of agreeing a lucrative new deal with the 24-year-old very soon.

Sportsmail recently reported that United and De Gea's agent Jorge Mendes wanted to conclude a deal quickly and sources at the club have now confirmed that the matter is moving rapidly in the right direction.

De Gea is now recognised as one of the best goalkeepers in the game and only has 18 months left on his contract at United.

Indeed his compatriot Valdes suggested on signing his own deal that De Gea now has no peers in world football.

Valdes, speaking to MUTV, said: 'I think now, at the moment, he is the best goalkeeper in the world.

'His performance every day and in every game shows everybody that his level is very high. He has had a great year and it is very nice. Now I think he is the best goalkeeper in the world.'

On the anticipated rivalry, Valdes added: 'I am here to help everybody. Always in my career, I have played to help my team-mates, to help my coach and to help everybody. I am a part of the team and I am not a problem, I am just a part of the team.'

I'm hoping the big money contract offer is true, because on top of Valdes accepting a number 2 role, it would make me very confident that Dave stays. I mean there's now a healthy Spanish contingent in the squad, that would really help him not to feel homesick.

Madrid fans are notorious for disrespecting goalkeepers at the slightest dip of form, including legends like Casillias. If De Gea decides to retire here, he'll do so as a legend even if his star dwindles at the end of his career, whereas in Madrid he'll probably get a whole lot of flak for just 3 or 4 bad games.

I sure hope he realises this. Don't leave home, Dave.

To be pedantic, the trend actually specifically excluded Casillas. He was the fans' undroppable golden boy. By the time Mourinho benched him for Lopez, he had plenty of footballing justification to do so, and it was still treated as some sort of outrageous travesty by the fans, disrespectful.

But your point is right. He'd be daft to go there, when Real have repeatedly proven how willingly they'll drop or sell existing stars to make room for the 'next big thing'.

Isn't he just thanking his supporters for reaching 1 million followers.. Don't see what's to worry about in it..

I don't think it's a goodbye. I think he's thanking us for standing by him. I think he loves it here.

1 million per week sounds a bit steep.

I'm pretty sure it's for getting a million followers, seeing as he just reached a million followers. I mean, y'know, come on...

Yeah it's just for 1 million followers.

Still... He's clearly outgrown us.

Na, I think he'll take silly money and stay.

If I am not wrong de Gea actually only joined Instagram a few months ago!

That's it, he is leaving. :(
Along with Hummels, at least half the rumour mill this morning are following the sign Falcao before DdG (both Mendes clients) Oggy article in the DT … the other half (the ones I want to believe) seem to think DdG has pen in hand to sign new contract with us as we speak!
Just seen Ogden has now posted a new article saying "De Gea would be making a huge mistake joining Real now" on DT site - he normally gets news first and this would be a good way of deflecting from his earlier article and leaving him with less egg on his face if Dave resigns imminently!
