Nah, he can negotiate a higher fee for him if the transfer would cost Real less. Same with DDG, he will get higher wages if the transfer fee will be lower.

De Gea won't be getting £200k with Madrid so in the long term Mendes will be making less.

Actually not that bothered by this anymore.

At best we get him for another year and sell him for a bigger fee, at worst he leaves us this summer. Either way, he's going and we're going to need to find a new GK soon so it makes (relatively) little long term difference to us which way things end up going.

Also, unlike a lot of other players who have gone to Madrid this deal actually makes a massive amount of sense for the player. If I was DDG I'd probably be heading for Madrid too, I'd just be trying to do it in the way that makes most sense financially.

Plus at least we've had the sense to prepare ourselves by bringing in Valdes as a potential stop gap solution. He's not on DDG's level but if he regains his best form then he's easily good enough for us and if he doesn't then it hasn't really cost us anything anyway.

I'm more interested in how we'll strengthen the team to the point where we don't need to have an outstanding keeper constantly bailing us out if trouble. If we get that right then we can live without DDG.

I voted yes and I really thought he would stay, doesn't seem to be the case anymore though. Annoying that we only have him for a short time.

Can't blame him if he goes. Madrid is his home and his girlfriend is there. Also arguably the biggest Club in the world is based there and they want him. No brainer really.

I don't mind if he goes because imo losing one player isn't going to put us in a crisis. Yes he is a fabulous keeper and you could argue that he has saved us points (literally) but if we have a solid defence sorted we will be ok with any other top level keeper. Our defence has been shocking at times over the past few years and Dave has been in fine form. We shouldn't be in the position in the first place where our keeper is our best player who usually is motm. It's not right for a club like United.

I will be annoyed however if we don't get a decent price for him. Anything under 30 million gbp would be a piss take. That'll just confirm us as the biggest mugs in the transfer window over the past few years.

Whether he deserves to be allowed to go to Real Madrid or not, he shows us enormous disrespect by not signing a new contract and allowing us to negotiate his release from a strong negotiation stance, the exact opposite of what Ronaldo did.

After the fluctuating performances he was providing 18 or so months ago most other big clubs would have sold him to Levante for £3m and let him rot there with their inferior coaches and facilities; we showed enormous patience and faith in him and he throws it back in our face with his handing of the negotiation keys to Real Madrid.

I came in here to say something similar.

This is exactly how I feel. We are a good club and have great fans. No one would begrudge him if he wanted to go back for personal reasons or if it is the only way he had a chance of being the No.1 goalkeeper for Spain etc etc. But after Eric Steele and Sir Alex taking care of him, protecting him and everyone else afterwards that helped him to develop, the way he's gone about it is a bit sneaky imho.
In any case according to the Daily Fail, he's 'agreed' personal terms with Madrid...

We didn't show faith in him out of some act of charity, if we thought we weren't going to benefit from him in the long run we'd have kicked him out with zero thought of loyalty or disrespect.

He paid us back for our "loyalty" with three excellent seasons (I'm not sure why you think he only started playing well 18 months ago). He contributed massively to our 12/13 PL win, was the only player to even resemble a United player under Moyes and, most importantly, he almost single handedly kept us in top four contention for large chunks of the season. He doesn't owe us anything at this stage.

It would be nice if he signed a new contract and let us make more money off him but why on earth would you expect him prioritize us over his own career?

I'm actually starting to hate this guy with a passion.

Just sign a new contract so we can at least get a decent fee, then you can feck off and get booed at the Bernabeu when Messi scores 5 goals past you.

To be fair, I'm getting a bit bored of the situation now. If he stays, brilliant. If he goes, best of luck to him.
Either way, I think he's being a bit disrespectful to the supporters by letting it drag on too far. We've essentially got top 4 now, he could easily come out and signal his intentions. Saying he's leaving isn't likely going to mess things up too much is it?

It seems inevitable that he'll sign for Real Madrid. Gutted because he is a top class goalkeeper and only 24, we could have had the goalkeeper position covered for at least a decade, however if he doesn't want to stay at the club let him go. I don't know who can replace him or who LVG has in mind (probably Lloris). I don't know if it's going to sound arrogant but there is no step higher from United (as a club) imo. Yes he is Spanish and he most likely would like to return home where Real Madrid and Barcelona are the giant clubs, but in terms of success in the past 20 years United is on the same level (thanks to Fergie of course).
Barcelona have shown that you don't need the best goalkeeper to be successful as a club, don't get me wrong Valdes was a good keeper but nowhere near the level De Gea is on right now, or the level Casillas was during that period. We just need to sort out our defense, get the right cash (30+ million) and just get on with it.

Should have offered new contract at the end of last season, why are we always slow to react to these things. Rooney and Nani mega pay contracts. Not selling Cleverly last summer transfer window. Splashing out 60 million on an overrated player. List of feck ups continue, good old Eddy.

How do you know we didn't? End of last season we finished seventh and Moyes was sacked. Why would de Gea sign then?

Tell me honestly, when we bought Di Maria, did you ever tho or say that he is overrated?

Not too sure that would have much of an effect on him signing or not in all honesty. If his mind was made up, then chances are he wouldn't change it no matter when we offered the contract and how much we offered him. For all we know, he might have been angling for a move last summer but we convinced him to stay another season, kind of like how we did with Ronaldo.

When I saw the World Cup, I never rated his performances. He looked no better than Nani in my opinion. I was more excited by the Herrera signing.

I know this is weird and juvenile but I love to see former players like Ronaldo and Evra do well, I will not feel the same for de Gea... Hope he finds it as difficult as he initially did with us when he joins Madrid, see how their fans react...

We pay Madrid £60m for di Maria and then sell them de Gea for (probably around) £20m

You've got to laugh, we're easily the softest of the 'elite clubs' to deal with.

I've said this before and been shouted down, but I actually think de Gea will struggle there.

I always love when people berate the club for not doing stuff they have no idea whether they did or not.

I can see where you're coming from there... when he was struggling here, the supporters stood by him and no matter what they were always behind him. If he messes up at Madrid, there is no way they'd have the same level of support for him. They'd be out for him in force. If he does leave, he might realise that the grass isn't always greener on the other side

I'd actually say 2 and a half season's good form and then getting us shafted on transfer sale fee is a poor return for the £18m, sizable wages and effort we put into him.

No club is a charity, so why does any player show respect and loyalty to the club that helped him develop? Why did Ronaldo choose to in an almost identical situation?

Really weird that I feel the same tbh. I've always wanted our former players to do well, but for some reason I feel different here, even though I love the bastard.

Part of it may also be the fact that past players won it all with us before leaving, Ronaldo, Evra etc. Whereas big Dave has only won one PL in his 4 years.

If there is no deal with United yet (they say there isn't), then a player cannot agree terms with another club without United's say so.
He's gone, no two ways about it, but all this 'contact agreed' shit is just painfully bollocks.
Considering how much United and the fans have stuck by him over the years, I'm pretty gutted he has decided to let his contract run down to a point where United can do nothing.

If he does leave and for me it's a big if it will be a massive boot in the balls to the Club.

I'm actually past the stage of caring by now. If he stays, great. If not, we'll be in the market for someone else. Actually, I wouldn't say no to a money + swap deal for Keylor Navas. Surely he'd be happy to move and be first choice instead of being shafted the way he has been by Real...
