So if you played against Messi and he scored 3 quality goals you'd apologize to your changing room. Yeah sure you would

Our attacking players did some great things. Why is it impossible for them to get a bit of credit?
Most defenders will always think they could have done better with every conceded goal. In an interview Ole said every time a keeper saved a shot he would think he could have done better no matter how good the save. Defenders will think the same - incredible shot? Could have closed him down better. Incredible through ball? Should have been following the runner.

Writing him off after today's game is a bit silly. He ended up having a mare but he also showed how much talent and potential he has. Their tactics in the 2nd half left them extremely vulnerable which allowed us to exploit their naivety. In a more solid structure with a coach prioritising his defending, this lad could go to the very top.

In saying that though, Konate was far better. He looks a proper defender.

I have said it before I actually rate Kounde better. Upamecano still not bad defender, unlucky that he’s facing us.

He was very impressive in the first half, comfortably their best player. Of course it has to be noted that he was allowed to roam and attack so much because they were playing three at the back, and I wondered at the time how he'd go in a back four.

Second half he struggled a bit and then the entire team lost it's head. Not sure how much to put on him and how much was team failure.
Well I can break down all the goals for you so you can decide. for Greewood's goal he was caught ball watching. His CB partner did not help him at all as Greenwood ran in between them but they were staring at Pogba who was about 20m away from them as if he would magically find the net from 50 yds out. Greenwood just strolled in behind under their noses and also muscled Upe a little bit. For Rashford's 2nd he got beat 1 on 1. If this happened to Maguire or Lindelof, Keane would slaughter them. For Rashford's hatrick he was caught ball watching again and was drawn in to Martial despite having 2 teammates covering him so Marcus just peeled away behind him for acres. Blatant defensive errors. A night to forget

Not if they were bangers! if it was through my weak tackling, awareness, etc then sure I would apologize.
Our attackers can get credit too. Marcus was great but as a former defender, I would be disappointed if anyone scored past me, especially if I was marking them. If they just smash it from 30 yrds then nothing you can do.

I think the biggest negative was the way he just showed no interest in getting back into position after losing the ball on his run forward. If Pogba did that we would be calling for his head, for a central defender to do it is outrageous.

I see Liverpool defenders slowly move back when they're caught out. Their teammates cover them and nobody bats an eyelid
Are you claiming to see Liverpool CBs dribble the ball out of defense, lost it and not recover back? I don't agree with that at all. It was shocking to see how bad Upamecano progressively got and how shot he looked.

mentality of top defenders. should revel in playing against best attackers and shutting them down. Its boosts your reputation and your confidence

I haven't seen alot of this guy but he was very poor tonight . But most CB,s would struggle with us tonight

Not always dribbling out of defence no, but taking a gamble and not running back like our fans seem to want all our players to do

That would be a very big concern for me if he were to sign for us. He was playing aganst one of the best counter attacking team as CB yet jogging back like he was a Ronaldo after 70 yards attacking run up front.

He probably lacks stamina.

Pretty sure there would be nothing you can do against Rashford and Fernandes on that form.

I'm a defender too. So thats not true for all. I believe in giving credit where its true rather than pretending im the center of the universe. If the attackers do something great that would likely work against any defense im going to give them credit

Mate, you're getting off track too much now. There's no need to take up the position of defending Upamecano after that kind of performance. We weren't watching Vidic getting his first taste of the PL here after a move from Serbia. This guy is playing in his 5th consectutive season in Europe for Red Bull. He played well last season in the CL. That performance was something else. Will be interesting to see how he reacts.

I'm saying what I saw in the last Liverpool match I watched. For some reason posters here want to suggest that only United's players and now Upamacano try to go to the ball at times and are unsuccessful and then other players need to cover them. It happens in every game for every team its one of the foundations of defending because contrary to what this place seems to suggest, teams defend. Defences dont defend alone and CBs certainly dont defend alone without the help of their fullbacks.

I'm not going to pretend like I know much about the lad but if he isnt good enough for us then i hope Ole sees that from today's performance.

Sure but that's no excuse for his performance today. I damn well don't want my CBs to walk back after having themselves lost the ball. I don't want any player to do that. In England it's one of the deadly sins. He did that seemingly because he simply couldn't get back. Why he chose to dribble with the ball forward when he didn't have the strength to do anything with it showed lack of intelligence. When you tire your passing get worse but that still didn't prevent him from making high risk-low reward plays.

Good defender, very bad game tonight. It happens, even to VVD. He's better than that. Needed better tactical guidance tonight. Personally, like many here, I prefer Konate if I had to pick a CB from RB Leipzig.

And that’s why you’re not a Champions League level defender.

What is it with people on here using the fact they play football as a means to validate their opinion. I see it quite a lot. Yes it gives you some slight understanding about how to play a position. By the difference between a Champions League quality player and a bottom half of the table quality player is massive let alone the difference between CL and semi-pro.

Hopefully if he's having any doubts about who to sign for next summer he'll think back to this game and realise he wants to be a part of it.

Konate was the better defender of the 2 tonight but You can’t write off Upamecano after one game . They did go very attacking in the 2nd half and we were under a little of pressure for 10 mins or so but once we got the 2nd , the midfield decided to stop playing for the rest of the half

I thought he played well, but then I realised it was Konate I was looking at. I think both had a decent game right up until they didn't.

Guess what lower case man, neither are you.

I have read some people say that if we don't win against Arsenal it will be one step forward and one step back - far from it. A match like PSG or against Leipzig makes it so much easier to attract stars. If OGS decides that Upamecano is good enough and should be our new leader at the back - it will be a lot easier to sign him after him watching us demolish their side. A few weeks ago, Angelino called us average - not a single player in that Leipzig-team will call us average again. We may not be consistant enough - but our top-level is now right up there with the best. And Upamecano would probably not mind being part of it.

If we want him!

Based on tonight, I can see why some posters who watch the Bundesliga rate Konate more highly, but tonight is the only game of his that I have watched.

He was good in the first half, awful in the 2nd half but that can be said for their entire team. The talent is clearly there, he's really good on the ball, and I think the main problem was how Leipzig played in the 2nd half, leaving their defense extremely vulnerable. I would take either him or Konate in this United squad.

 The unfair criticism has begun. Come on lads, it’s one bad game. He looks brilliant most of the times when I watch him play. Did you all not see him dominate Atletico last year? He was just unlucky he came up against Marcus, who on his day, like last night, is one of the best wingers in the world.

Put it this way, I’d activate his release clause right now and make him first choice over Lindelof next to Maguire.

I was kind of impressed by him and Konate, up to a point.. Wheels came off badly last 20 mins but previous to that they were doing a really difficult job well imo. The way the team is set up looks risky, it kind of looks like when things go wrong, they're going to go very, very wrong. Or maybe its this season a bit. Still, they both looked talented for large parts of the match

I've touched on this point before. The way teams like Leipzig are setup it puts alot of pressure on their CBs because not only are they expected to enforce the press in a high-line but also resist the press in a deeper defensive line.

The way we setup is understandable due to the short comings of our CBs which would expose them badly in such a high risk approach hence we have numerous players at fullback and midfield helping to keep defensive balance.
