Dayot Upamecano | Signs for Bayern

We need to be ruthless if want to get back to winning ways asap. If the goal is to only develop local lads and somehow qualify for Champions League for next 4,5 years than keep pinning hopes on unproven and average players just because they are "home grown".
Theres not 1 home grown player in our back 4 Jibbs? Only 2 (not including Pogba) who you would consider starters played last night

Tuanzebe is being suggested as part of the deal because of high demand of young promising English players among German clubs. Tuanzebe is a promising youngster who is unproven in EPL. The pressure and media spotlight at United can hamper his development, even more so when we are desperate to find a long term partner of Maguire.
Including him in part of the deal for Upamecano can convince Leipzig to sell him to us, because they will be getting a promising English CB who they can sell for 50 milliom plus in future and we will be getting a young potential world class CB who solves our immediate problem. I am not sure apart from Tuanzebe Leipzig can be interested in any other united CB. But if United can afford Upamecano in cash only deal, more than welcome. It is not my money.

Leipzig wouldn't take Tuanzebe as part of the deal IMO. Leipzig will instead have their eyes on the next 17 year old CB who has big potential who will cost peanuts. And in a few years there'll be a thread on here from fans asking for United to be ruthless in acquiring said CB from Leipzig.

So how much would it take for Leipzig to consider selling him this summer

I don't think we will go for him.

Our bosses are fighting heavily for a contract extension of Alaba. If he stays, the left CB spot will basically be occupied for the next years.
Then we have our record transfer Lucas Hernandez. A pairing of Alaba and Lucas isn't going to happen. We wouldn't stand a chance against big and strong attackers and the built up play wouldn't be ideal with two left footed CBs.

As you saw against Barca, Davies will surely stay left full back, meaning that Lucas Hernandez might (and should in my opinion) be sold.

Regarding the position of the right CB. Under Flick Boateng experienced his second spring but he's not as good as in his prime. Once Süle is completely fit, Boateng will be benched. It wouldn't surprise me, if Süle starts against Lyon.

Additionally we got Tanguy Kouassi Nianzou from PSG (by the way he said he prefers Nianzou over Kouassi which he used at PSG) and we obviously convinced him that he would be given more game time in Munich than in Paris even with Thiago Silva retiring.

On top of that we have Pavard who mostly played as a right back for us, but also can play CB.

So, for now we have as CBs: Alaba, Süle, Hernandez, Boateng, Nianzou, Pavard, Martinez.

Martinez is as good as gone, but even then we have more than enough options for the right CB.
I can imagine that we sell Lucas and buy a "cheaper version" of him respectively a "Pavard for the left side" , meaning a backup for left CB and left full.

And, as Flick showed that he gives youth players a chance, we have the 17 years old Bright Arrey-Mbi, that is very highly rated by everyone in the club.

tl;dr: Even if Boateng and Lucas leave until next summer, I cannot imagine us going for Upamecano, because for the position of right CB we have Süle (basically the German version of Upamecano), Nianzoud, Pavard and Arrey-Mbi.

Where do you think he will go if not to Bayern then

Where do you think he will go if not to Bayern then

Premier league most definitely.

He was linked heavily with Arsenal for the past two years, but I think that they are right now not good enough for him.

But maybe he will also be part of Barcas rebuild, who knows.

I just wanted to "calm down" those United fans that think you wouldn't have a chance of signing him because Bayern will go for him.

He would be my ideal CB signing no doubt about that but just don't see us paying big money for him this window, personally I think we will either bring back Smalling for next season and then wait for release clause next summer. The other option is we decide to go for Badiashile instead so we can also buy some AM cover like Grealish too.

Since there’s been so much talk about Upamecano lately I followed him a bit extra closely tonight. I think he was very poor. Ok he faced some great attackers, but honestly, if our defenders had this kind of performance they would be killed in here. This doesn’t mean I think he is a poor player, but he showed some real weaknesses tonight.
I thought already in the last match against Atlético he had some poor awareness of what was going on behind him, but he was so good in that match he was forgiven for that. Tonight PSG found space behind him all the time.

The first time was already at 5:50 when. Neymar run in behind and hit the post.

Second time was at 16:07 when he completely missed Mbappes run.

At 43:50 he jogged home slowly when PSG had a counter and Neymar got a free shot. This was also an issue tonight: slow reaction, and poor engagement in critical situations.

55:20 Bernat ran in behind him and got a good chance. Then Upamecano “forgot” Bernat and in the second wave he could score totally unmarked.

69:30 Had no idea where Mbappé who could head the ball against goal

71:10 Dribbled by Mbappé who gets a free close shot and almost scored

87:10 Neymar got a free run in the centre and was close to score

It's a bit harsh to write him off after one game. But, saying that, it wasn't an impressive performance. Could have been (and probably should have been) another 3 or so goals for PSG. I've not followed him closely enough to judge, but I would guess that this was way below his usual standards?

He had a poor game. Still has a lot of growing to do as a player, but has a lot of potential.

@A-man
I think you need to consider what he was up againsttonight and how Tuchel purposely set up to compromise him. Neymar 1 vs 1 all game dropping and out of position would have been a ridiculously difficult contest for him, but having Mbappe switched to the left (and thus his outside right) meant they could run lanes all night long with Upamecano completed isolated and having no way to even contest for the ball - the moment he went out to deal with Mbappe, Neymar simply tracked on his inside, and vice-versa.

His coach needed to change tact the moment he saw Mbappe out on the left. Neymar is playing at a level where he can fairly contest for best player on the planet and Mbappe was also outstanding for the majority of the game. Even with perfect tactics and actual help from his full-back, Upamecano was in for a tough night; he got neither of those things and was left high and dry by those around him and was given very little chance, or opportunity, to take a player on.

Under those circumstances, it's very hard to knock the guy because any option taken was made to be the wrong one by a duo working in tandem.

You’re right, but I still think he exposed some weaknesses and poor sides. Or you can say PSG took advantage of them as they targeted him.

Just a few days ago, my friends and I talked about him as a great CB with big potential but all had noticed he often was unaware of what was going on behind him. Mbappé and Neymar are excellent at running in behind, and only the best defenders in the world can handle that.

But I also think he showed slow reactions, poor instincts, switching off, whatever we can call it. Watch 43:50. Why doesn’t he run home?
Forgot Bernat at the goal.
Let Mbappé get that header.
etc

He will probably become one of the greatest CBs of his time as long as he continues to improve and if he stay fit. But tonight I think he showed some things he need to work on.

One bad game and the knives are out.

He is the best CB of his generation.

He has it all (play from the back, drive with thPermit e ball at feet, strong in the air, speedy recovery, strong and fast on the ground), aged of 20 yo.

He his like a faster version of De Ligt.

Please get him and send Lindelof to the bench.

Upamecano, Thiago and Sancho will be the perfect summer

Against the best he came up well short. Lindelof would be torn to shreds in here with an evening like that. Just goes to show all CBS have bad days no matter how promising and maybe we should cut them some slack.

I see where you're coming from, I just thought from around the 6th minute, tactics needed to be adjusted and when that didn't happen to the extent it should have, Mbappe and Neymar really got into a groove of two-teaming him.

All round, a hard game to gauge him on.

Lapses of concentration and being too eager to press high have been his issues from what I saw in the BuLi in the season gone by. And it's exactly what I was telling @sammsky1

He's a very good talent but it was a wise decision to extend his contract at Die Roten Bullen because he's still very young. And it was reported in L'Equipe a few weeks back that he didn't feel he would get game time at a elite club and tbh with you it's easy to see why he would think that.

Another season in the BuLi will do him a world of good and hopefully Nagelsmann can work on his weaknesses.

He'd be an automatic starter for us, quite easily.

I think if we end up buying a highly promising young centre back that they'll end up getting more starts than Lindelof.

I think “quite easily” does a huge disservice to what has been a very strong defence at United.

He wouldn’t walk into our starting XI

One thing people need to remember....he is 21years old. He is younger than Tuanzabe who we are calling a very promising young player with plenty of potential, think about that.

He isnt the finished article, he is rough around the edges, I think his concentration is something that really needs improving, Ferdinand suffered from that in his earlier years too. He did make errors in this match, but also did some good work, the play around him (especially the keeper) was pretty awful, he wasnt at fault for the goals and lets face it, what centre backs arent going to really struggle against Mbappe and Neymar, they are probably the best two attacking players in the world outside of Ronaldo and Messi, will have been a great learning experience for him.

If he is available and can be bought for a price close to the buy out clause for next year, think its very good value myself

Obviously depends how he would settle in to a new climate and huge club, he isnt the finished article, but I disagree, would be our best defender and has world class potential, he absolutely walks in over Lindelof for me, there are lots of centre backs about that would and he is near th etop of the pile

he didn't shine at all tonight vs PSG, but then again, having Mbappe and Neymar in your neighbourhood is a tough gig for any CB!

I was reminded a few days ago that Jaap Stam joined us aged 26. Ditto VVD at Liverpool. It took Rio 2 years at United and after age 24 to establish his credentials as the Rolls Royce that he is remembered for. Ditto Gary Pallister.

I'm not sure when it happened that centre backs were expected to be world class by age 21. Im normally quite cynical about youth players as Im bored of the overhyping, but this kid has plenty of time to make it. if doesn't end up at Bayern, as most great Bundesliga players do, I hope we can get him.

You just knew that some would flip flop from sign him up after the Atletico performance to leave him well alone after being given the run round by two of the best forwards in the world tonight.

Fair play to those who still had the same concerns about him after the game last week.

Agreed.

Neymar and Mbappe were both pretty quiet but Upamecano was stock in the wrong formation with 3 at the back, him being in the center, not allowing him to man mark Neymar and Mbappe at the same time.

He is much better in a flat 4 at the back.

He has to play in the centre because Konate is normally the one that plays there, but he was injured. It's not a easy role to play I agree, especially against two world class attackers.

Should sell a couple of CB's and then make them a serious offer just to see what response we get

If Konate was fit, i thinks that he will have started alongside Upamecano in a flat 4 at the back.

It's a pity he was injured, because it would've been a real battle between the two French CBs and the two PSG attackers.

I feel robbed..

In the name of all panicking UTD fans would hereby like to thank you for holding our hands and calming us. For the transfer window is stressful and full of speculations.

In one way it is not the right match to gauge him on, but on the other hand there are people making claims that he would walk in at United and instantly become our best defender, that he is top 5 in the world etc. Then of course he should be evaluated when he faces the best, because just like our players today, he would play against some of the best players in the world in the PL. If we need a substantial upgrade on the defenders we have today, to make our defence the best in the PL, he needs to be world class of course.

But one game is one game, and he looked very isolated. But I still think, from this and other matches, that he seems to have poor awareness of what’s going on behind him. He seems to react slowly sometimes. Of course he has many good and great attributes as well. He is one of the best I’ve seen at driving up the ball. He is great at making passes through the press.

Yeah, we aren’t getting any of that trio.

Thought he was still excellent on the ball.
As did I, he was passing the ball whilst being pressed between PSG attacking and midfield lines a few times, something we need to learn to do if we're to play against a pressing system.
did he not just sign a new contract? are there actually links or ie hs just the most fashionable defender at the most fashionable club right now?
He signed a 1 year extension with a lower release clause like Werner did last summer iirc. Bayern already linked with him for next summer.
