Day 9: Cameroon vs Serbia | South Korea vs Ghana | Brazil vs Switzerland | Portugal vs Uruguay

Does anyone else think the WC group stage is great?

You get four matches everyday and unlike the CL they aren't the same old teams or at the exact same friggin time. Hence that sense of it being a festival of football is at its highest point at the group stage when so many countries are involved. As things narrow down the quality may go up but so does the seriousness / cautiousness of things.

Hoping we get a lot of entrainment in the knockouts too but just a shout out to the group stages of the WC which I think are great fun.

Overall its been a good group stage. Cagey first round but its opened up a bit more this round.

Variety of teams will always make it worth watching for me, regardless of the quality

Those sides don't win shit.

And Serbia did what you are clapping, and they might get eliminated later.

Nobody will remember Morocco and Cameron, defending like shit you don't go far in tournaments.
Morocco have one of the best defenses in this tournament. They've yet to concede a goal.

Morroco has 2 clean sheets ??
Don't bother. African team so evidently can't defend, has to be the oppo being shite.

The inability of people to gage and genuinely appreciate strengths and weaknesses and not just stop at <countryname> never ceases to amaze me. It's precisely what makes the World Cup interesting!

Korea are very poor. I'm surprised their players are so bad. Literally nobody other than Son in attack and literally nobody other Kim Min Jae in defence.

Drogba is very handsome with the bald head, has to be said.

Irony is strong here

And just wait for the third round when all hell breaks loose at last chance saloon. There's only two 100% eliminated teams so far, right? (Qatar and Canada). That's fantastic going into last chance saloon.

Studio not giving much credit to Ghana here!

I mean they haven't been very good. Both goals were poorly defended by Korea. When you look at the players Ghana have they should be far better than Korea, yet Korea had more control for much of the 1st half.

Ghana is winning the world cup. It's a news that spreading around social media.

There's regional patterns and then individual traits within that. A lot of that is shaped by how qualifying works. In Europe you can't afford to drop too many points so control comes to the forefront and qualified teams display that trait. Switzerland beat Italy at it, which isn't at all surprising looking at how both have played over the last decade.

I always love the early stages of WC and Euros for the fact there's so many games of teams I would've never watched otherwise. Saw some of the posters here complaining about four matches a day - I live for this days with football from the morning till the late evening and already feel sad today is the last of those. It's a festival indeed and again I end up watching pretty much all the games of the tournament, even if some of them are only in the background, it's constant football and it's fantastic. Tbh I might even reconsider my stance on 48 teams World Cup: I'll most probably end up watching these Uzbekistan - Niger and New Zealand - Paraguay games with utmost passion.

They have played badly. Two random fluke goals and then been riding on pashun ever since. Ole would be proud. But that is also why these African teams are dangerous. As soon as they get a goal they get an intesity that can be very difficult for any team to handle.

I love it!

Kudus was very good in the first match for Cameroon and he's showing his worth today as well.....a player that ETH brought to Ajax

His head is perfectly round, looks good on him.
So is Lukaku's, but his face is also round.

Haven't seen him here but met Drogba at a Waitrose years ago. Already retired but looked incredibly fit. It was odd how lean he was, you saw him on the pitch and imagined this massive guy but being an inch shorter I felt pretty big around him, not just my waistline but chest, shoulders... Guy was lean as feck.

So yeah, can imagine him looking pretty good as opposed to Lukaku

There are but you are taking them too far. You say you remember the 1990 Cameroon, but you have forgot the other 5 times.

The reason why last match was so entertaining was mainly Serbia not Cameroon. Serbia had the better attacking plays and individual moments (apart from the Poborsky chip), and they continued to attack (naively) at 3-1, and they made the terrible defensive mistake (for goals 3-2 and 3-3).

The poster saying shit about Morocco's defense is obviously wrong. But you have deep stereotypical attitudes about both European and African football.

And for the record I have said several times that if Europe or South America should get 1 extra place, then SA deserves it more. But I find your constant commenting about Italy missing out also a bit odd.

Glad the African teams turned up in the second round of fixtures. 2 wins (hopefully with this one 3) a draw and a loss.

Morocco, Senegal and hopefully Ghana all with a good chance of getting into the round of 16.

That's an awful statemement.

Finally a shot on target, that was a nice header, hard to take

They have the worst crossing I've ever seen. Such nice build up play and the worst final balls

One thing I have liked in this tournament so far. Very few teams have looked completely out of place. Obviously Qatar and Costa Rica were the standouts in that regard after the first game but Costa Rica came back and got a good win against Japan.

Nothing fluky about the second goal at all - it was an incredible cross from Ayew - and while the defending for the first goal was poor they're being a bit harsh on them for the second, ball in like that can be very difficult to defend.

Thats fair. The ball in for the second goal was very good

Tbh there's something about the Euroes which doesn't excited me. Maybe because h not from the region. But I love this part of the WC. Like the honeymoon phase of a relationship

Nice ball recuperation and well taken goal
