Day 7: Portugal vs Morocco, Uruguay vs Saudi Arabia and Iran vs Spain

Such a boring match, lacking quality.

The next match gonna be as boring.
Hopefully Spain get an early goal and force Iran out. Spain can play great stuff and if they get the space they'll score loads IMO.

Spain play great stuff but Iran can suck life of any football match unfortunately.

I could see them sneaking a 1-0 on Portugal or a PK win. I wouldn't be surprised by that by Spain is a tall order. Godin and Giminez can keep Spain out for a while but tough to see them making it 120 minutes with Spain.

Fairly ugly side but quality at the back and occasional magic up front. Pesky underdog.
120 minutes?

A lot of people don't want to understand to win this type of competitions you just need a solid defensive unit on the knockout stages. Wouldn't be surprised if they don't suffer any goal if they reach the last 8. Godin and Jimenez just bail out a team who needs to compete as much as Cristiano.

Uruguay badly need a #10. That two striker system simply doesn’t work.

Was actually surprised they didn't call up Gaston Ramirez, he can play that position. Loderio aswell another advanced midfielder who didn't make final cut.

Again, is it really boring? I don't see it like that. Guess being World Cup game has something to do with that.

Very very slow paced, lack of scoring chances, I would say it's boring tbh.

Put it this way Redcafe would be going mental if Man. United were involved in this sort of game.

Probably the occasion got to me. If this was some qualification game I would see it the same...

Yes. World Cup always have loads of boring games in the group stage.
Quite normal when you have so many players playing at the end of their seasons with players from different clubs with no much training sessions. Its always like this. The knockout stages have a tendency to be more closed, even if the level of teams gets higher.

Again, Portugal were winning starting the second half. The team who was supposed to attack to equalize was Spain, not them. Portugal played their usual defensive game, away from the result.
So to conclude, Spain dominated them.

Don't disagree. World Cup for me always starts from QFs. By this time it's all big teams fighting each others.

Hey, I literally forgot this conversation at all. :D

My point was that Portugal was never an attacking side anyway. This side is always defensive and jammy, so nothing new happened.

I think Uruguay’s performance is somehow even more embarrassing that Portugal’s. Hope both those teams are out early.

Uruguay winning the World Cup with a string of 1-0's would just about finish the purists off.

Yep, it's almost always the best defences that go far into and win these tournaments. In fact, the winners often don't even have a cohesive attack, or at least a star striker putting every team to the sword.

You guys played Nani and Ronaldo up front instead of proper strikers and Eder scored the winner in the final.

Germany chopped and changed their strikers throughout 2014 and Gotze went up front and scored the winner in the final.

Spain tried Fabregas, Negredo, Torres in Euro 2012 and played Villa wide left and ineffective Torres up front for most of 2010.

I need some Spain and Mexico in my life after this.

Spain will be stifiled by Iran I'm afraid so spectacle of game won't be great.

At least tomorrow should be fun, Argentina-Croatia has potential of being a classic.

Yeah and that's how they win, you can outplay them attack them and somehow they'll still beat you. I'm still frustrated about euro 16 quarters. :)

I am not saying it should be like that, but bar Spain, maybe Germany or Brasil, with some expectations from France, England or Mexico it will not be much different than this to reach the last stages. Hopefully I am wrong.

Really annoyed with Saudi Arabia there. Cowardly display. Manager made all the right subs, but players just didn't have the bottle to actually take risks.

I know they had a beating from Russia last week, but bloody hell - at least try. Losing 2-0 wouldn't be too bad if they actually tried to go for it at 1-0.

Morocco by far the better team but didn’t have any quality in the final third. Portugal defensive crap as usual.
I mean what did Santos expect with a 34 year old centre back who plays in China and a past it brainless Pepe. Recipe for disaster.
