Day 6: Colombia vs Japan, Poland vs Senegal and Russia vs Egypt

To be fair Russia really hasn’t played anyone. Egypt and Saudi Arabia are dreadful. Uruguay should give a better idea of Russia’s quality.
Yeah I don't think anybody REALLY thinks Russia are anything special.

Golovin Cheryshev and Fernandes look decent, but the rest are bang average.

No one is claiming Russia will reach semis. They just have done extremely well with what they have in front of them

Nah I think both will be very happy, group A is by far the weakest both in terms of the strongest side and the overall strength. Russia have looked good but I think will still be quite a bit behind Spain or Portugal.

Yeah, will maybe give them a game but I'd fancy both to beat them out. Portugal/Uruguay could potentially be a bit of a slugfest, although Portugal were obviously very entertaining on Friday.

The big Russian striker wearing the 22 shirt, scored the second goal I think, has amazing hold up play, Jose would love him

Is that your usual level or a simple meltdown?

First half was our level. Defensive and trying to nick a goal from an individual brilliance. Once we concede, this happens every time.

This generation is not that good though. Individually and tactically not good enough for world stage.

They will probably play against spain or Portugal, so should be going out in the next round anyway. Dont think they have enough to beat one of them

That's disappointing, I used to follow Egypt and support them a little bit. You used to be the best african team from a style standpoint.

Big guy up front is excellent too, I thought.
He's definitely a good target man, but I think the better defenders will handle him no problem.

Stopping crosses to him will be the main thing.

Looked a pen to me. This and Kane yesterday.

I guess you have to perform some strangulation move to give a pen?

VAR at the World Cup seems to be indicating just how many times "they should have had a penalty" is actually true in games when VAR isn't used. It really is said nearly every game in the Premier League, and ref's don't give them unless it's 100% nailed on in real time. When VAR is widespread, defending as a whole is going to have to change.

Or maybe it won't, and football will just have a shedload of penaties from now on. Either way, great!

What was he waiting for to shoot?

Never underestimate mind boggling refereeing decisions in a World Cup when the host is involved. Uruguay also tough as hell. Great central defense pairing, two world class forwards capable of scoring against any opponent and solid all around team.

Spain would be strongly favored but Portugal would be in tough with either I'm thinking. I think England and Belgium got it easier with being next to Colombia-Japan-Senegal-Poland. A good group but neither likely as dangerous as the host or Uruguay.

Sooner VAR comes to the premier league the better.

FIFA pretty much put all their man power into this, and arguably you can still have some talking points. Now there are plenty more games in a week and going month after months. It's a tall order task for one FA to maintain the standard. Shite standard VAR does more harm than good.

The national team would kindly tell Liverpool to feck off.

I'm hoping the nation is sharpening it's scissors to finally cut its umbilical cord with Real Madrid and starts looking for someone to blame for its national pain (ahem Ramos). :D

Golovin looks lively but lacks that 10% of quality which separates good CM's from great CM's.

I think if he moved to a top European club this summer he could really improve, he's got all the raw basics. Eriksen was no better than him at the same age, I think they could become similar.
