Day 6: Colombia vs Japan, Poland vs Senegal and Russia vs Egypt

Wonder how tight the dope testers are with the hosts...

Documentary with the Russian whistleblower proves that it doesn't matter how much they test, a regimen to get through can easily be set up.

A chance to score a goal here for Egypt

What were the odds on Russia being the first team to qualify out of the group stages? Even with them playing first?

I don't know about others but I had no idea about the level of Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Yeah. The friendlies before the WC were quite awful as well.

I'm starting to think more and more that having a decent first match gives you a huge initial advantage as well. Obviously you lot played well in the end and got a massive win margin, but getting a slightly easier game than your group rivals in your first game gives you such a mental boost heading into the next two. Would be interested to see (historically) what sort of advantage it typically offers.

VAR has worked so well at this tournament (apart from for England)

Good to see the hosts doing well but they won’t win it or get close.
Egypt are poor and were relying on a 75% fit Salah who still looks dangerous.

How will they fare against teams with all round strength? Croatia and Serbia look better imo

Salah is sure as hell not fit at all and played way earlier than he should.

If he is fit enough to play, I think he has to play. Its the World Cup and could be a once in a lifetime opportunity, you don't want to be on the bench for that

I don't mind Salah, but I'm glad he'll be going home soon just so I don't have to listen to the the commentators talking about him incessantly

I like the way VAR is working so far, especially since the video ref can simply overrule decisions without much fuss.

To be fair Russia really hasn’t played anyone. Egypt and Saudi Arabia are dreadful. Uruguay should give a better idea of Russia’s quality.

If you're Portugal or Spain you're not exactly licking your chops at the prospect of Russia or Uruguay in the second round. Same could be said the other way round mind.
Nah I think both will be very happy, group A is by far the weakest both in terms of the strongest side and the overall strength. Russia have looked good but I think will still be quite a bit behind Spain or Portugal.
