Day 6: Colombia vs Japan, Poland vs Senegal and Russia vs Egypt

I think he's great and can understand why people want to see him do well after the year he's had, but yeah, the love-in's gotten a bit much at times. Can tell the presents are fairly limited in who they're knowledgeable about when it comes to smaller teams.
Dont get me wrong I do like him , think he is an excellent player, wasted at Liverpool, but these 2 on BBC are just OTT.

Russia have been very lucky with their group.

That is hindsight. Many people predicted Russia to go out after the group stages, they have outperformed the expectations by quite a margin. They are practically confirmed as 1st placed before Uruguay.

Been really impressed by Russia these last two games. Considering that they're the lowest ranked team, they certainly don't play like it. Saudia Arabia, Panama and Tunisia just to name a few are way worse.
As I said earlier — Russia lost tons of points in FIFA ratings because they weren't participating in the WC qualifiers.
No one expected 8:0 after 2 games, of course, but we were never close to SA or Panama's level.

Russia are crap they said... never underestimate the hosts.

Salah needs to drop deep, take a leaf out of Ronaldo's book against Spain. No point being that far upfront if no one can get the ball to you.

It’s inexcusable to concede 3 goals in 15 minuets in a WC game.

Pathetic!

By the time the world Cup ends at least 1 paper will link Dyzuba as a backup striker for Manchester United.

A lot of people waxing lyrical about Golovin - he moves well with the ball, and is tidy, but seems to lack quality and cutting edge when it matters with the final ball (looks an Arsenal type player all over). Cheryshev is more experienced of course, but appears to be superior in terms of actual passing, crossing and shooting; he's been very impressive.

With regards to how popular football is in Russia it is strange that Russia don't have more good players considering their population.

Population size of course doesn't always equal ability - Japan, Nigeria and Mexico are similar size as well, for example, and are similarly average. Russia's winters probably don't help either.

Where did you get that first game since Feb? He was fit since May, only the brazilian doctor ruled him out until the start of the preparation to not risk injuring himself in meaningless games for PSG. He played 2 friendlies for Brazil before the WC.
From the match thread. Plenty of people said so.

What's Manuel Jose busy with nowadays?

Retired.

I'm not even sure we'll score against Saudi itself. The only thing good out of this is Cuper will feck off after the tournament.

I remember thinking you looked absolute gash during Euro 2016, which was why I expected very little from you. Did think you'd beat the Saudis though (albeit by a much smaller margin) and had a decent chance at qualification depending on how Egypt performed.

Pound Shop Trezeguet off.

Why the feck would an Egyptian be named that?

For some reason I was never under the impression that Egypt's defence was this bad?

Mind you, the Russians are really giving everything. 3 nil up and they're still working hard.

Well done and thank you Russia. Hopefully LFC will *request Egypt don't play Salah in the last game. He's pretty much just jogged through this one too.

What were the odds on Russia being the first team to qualify out of the group stages? Even with them playing first?

He's already played for Arsenal.

Arsenal Tula in Russia, right enough...

Ahh right, ok. That makes more sense. I've been shocked because i haven't been paying attention and have only read that they're the lowest ranked team and one of the worst in the tournament. Makes bit more sense now what you said. Because they've been quite impressive tbh.

Wonder how tight the dope testers are with the hosts...

Yeah. The friendlies before the WC were quite awful as well.

At least him having a quiet World Cup will mean Madrid or Barca don’t get him and he will stay with Pool.

Salah is sure as hell not fit at all and played way earlier than he should.

What is it with the top players and always getting injured before a big tournament? Convenient excuse for when they end up being rubbish. Salah and Neymar this year, Ronaldo in 2014, Rooney in every other tournament.
