Day 4: Morocco vs Croatia | Germany vs Japan | Spain vs Costa Rica | Belgium vs Canada

I don't know about that VAR offside malarkey. It used to be simple and generally the correct answer but nowadays they treat it as astrophysics.

The Germans have looked great but they need to improve their final ball.

This Germany side is giving me Spain 2010 vibes
Not quite the same level but they look great. Goretzka on the bench right now too, he'll surely come in to provide more balanced when needed too. Same with Sane. Basically Bayern, with Bayern's CL winning coach... They'll go far. Spain v Germany will be a great game between 2 of my favourites

Have Japan managed to string 2 passes together? Seriously poor this from them when there's a lot of good technical Japanese players around
They had a decent first 10-15 minutes, especially down the right. Nothing since. Germany are really good.

lineup is subpar in that regard imo. Kimmich-Gündogan with Havertz, Musiala and Müller on the field doesn't make much sense.
My guess is just he's flexing his superiority against a weaker side, but that Goretzka comes in vs Spain?

I really hate to see keepers diving before the ball is kicked. Just wait a split second an you might catch it easily

Very rarely. Peter Shilton did this and got lambasted for it. Italia 90 might have been the big one. Even though he generally dived the right way.

I remember seeing a video years ago on it. You have about .6 of a second from when the ball is struck until it hits the back of the net. It takes .3/4 of a second to react to the direction of the kick and dive to get it.

It's possible to make a save and is some cases you might but in most you'd be diving after the ball has it the net.

We look similar to 2018 with the big difference that in Rüdiger & Schlotterback we have one of the fastest centerback pairings instead of Hummels & Boateng who could barely move at that point.
Not convinced with Havertz as the striker and I would like to see Gnabry move to the center more often. He‘s our biggest goal threat on paper but rarely will be in goalscoring positions in that setup

Germany looking much better than i thought, hope they flop after the group, im more scared them than Brazil...but who knows if Marcus turns turbo mode on.

Final 3rd play for a lot of the nations in this World Cup has been shit. It’s like as soon as they reach the opponent’s box, they seem puzzled and lost on what to do with the ball which results in them needlessly giving it away.

After seeing that 45 mins i think Germany have an excellent chance at winning the World Cup this year

Well, there might be more raw offensive power in this lineup, but their roles overlap to such an extent that I feel like it's hard for them to really synergize properly. I'd profer Goretzka in midfield besides Gündogan and Kimmich at right back, Süle as center back. Much clearer structure.

Pretty decent first half but Japan always dangerous on the counter.

Still think Japan can nick a goal against that high line just need some more composure on the ball. Not sure who they have on the bench who can bring some control into the team.

Sane is injured. Not playing this game.

how many finals have Germany reached in the 20 years out pundits have been insisting they're not what they were

Goretzka is more physical, Gündogan more technical. I don't think one or the other is more balanced, just a different approach.

I don't know much about Japan outside the Celtic players, do they really have players better than Kyogo and Hatate on the bench? These are players with CL experience.

I don't know why Japon still keep this manager. He's really average

Would have Kyogo over Maeda any day

Kimmich at RB will kill Germany creativity by half at least and solidity in midfield would degrade a lot too.

Too bad for Musiala bad finish, would have been a great goal.

Musiala is such a joy to behold. Would have loved having him at United.

Musiala is just outstanding. He's only 19 and is still very weak physical, his technical abilities, understanding of the game are already on a world class level and he's obviously not even close to his final form.
