Day 19: Morocco vs Portugal | England vs France (QF 3&4)

Yes I think a keeper with a longer reach would have.

It was hit well, but it was really far out if you rewatch the aerial replay version.

So we have to just play the tallest keeper? It was a really good strike. Pickford made plenty of good saves in the tournament and I don’t even rate him massively. Think that’s harsh analysis.

If you mean the one who said you should have realised Kane was incapable of scoring 2 pens in a row and you should have had another player ready to take the 2nd one, then I think you are being a bit harsh.
In my opinion she is spot on. I mean everyone expects to get at least 2 pens a game and naturally the goalie will psych you out for the 2nd one. Its so obvious really.
She should be the new England manager

The silence after every time she makes a statement as well her workmates are wondering what the feck she’s on about

Maybe write that down and tape it to your mirror so you can repeat to yourself every day. It won’t make it true but maybe it will make you feel better at some point, as a meditation mantra if nothing else.
Look, I don't care much about it really, I'm neither English or an England fan. I'm just saying it seems a bit odd to say that Dechampes is a better manager after this match considering he acted the exact same way as Southgate and it just happened to work out for him (you could even argue that France was in more need of early subs as England clearly were on top in the game until France scored their second).

Hehe i always have a bad feeling when the same player has to take two penalties in a row in a game… it never feels good.

Seen him sky a penalty for Spurs too, surely the chance to break Rooney's record wasn't playing on his mind

Good game by England for sure but never had the feeling France had to get out of 2nd gear.
What England seem to lack most of all is self confidence. Over the decades they have built up a World Cup trauma. The same applies to Holland, Portugal and Spain (despite winning a wc fairly recently).
Compare that to France and they seem untouchable, England wasn't able to make them nervous.
This is actually nonsense. Firstly France couldn’t get out of second gear. Do you seriously think their game plan was to be pinned back, concede two penalties, numerous fouls around the box and soak up pressure with that soft defence?

Secondly this side clearly doesn’t have that trauma. You see players being brave in difficult positions and playing like we know they do in the PL. The best thing Southgate has done for English football is getting his sides to play with freedom.

England were the better team tonight but a bad penalty miss, some good saves and not getting that bit of luck, which almost any team that wins a big tournament gets at some point along the way did for us.

Fine margins and all.

Then there is also the fact that pickford is shite and has been for some time now. If you watched everton play you'd know.

You can't deny he plays far better for England though and has done for years.

Did we actually have any shots on target? Hardly any. We looked toothless in the final third all game. We weren't dominated in midfield is the best you can say.
Kanes slightly deflected shot that Loris flapped away, Bellingham’s volley, Kane 1on1, Saka burst through the middle and had a weak finish, Maguire hit the post and Hernandez just got in front of Saka to avoid a tap in. There’s some shots on target there and some chances there as well. France had the long range strike, Girouds volley and header and that’s about it.

Tough on England. Two great goals, but otherwise France were very quiet. Walker had Mbappe firmly in his pocket.

Southgate is clearly a good man manager, and has gotten this team reasonably far. But I will never understand his substitutions. England were right on top after equalising, and needed to bring on fresh blood to keep the momentum going. Instead he just waited and waited.

And then introducing Grealish 5 minutes into added time? For what possible purpose?

What happened to Sterling? He barely looks a footballer anymore. Alexis Sanchez-esque decline.

How about we say they are both a bit shit and leave it at that? Luck definitely played a part in today’s outcome, maybe Deschamps was simply luckier.

My thoughts as an Irishman
Upecamo and to a lesser extent Hernandez are woeful. Why Saliba isn't starting for France I do not know.
England were poor in the first half but pushed hard in the second half. Having said that how many actual saves did Lloris make? Although in fairness Pickford didn't make many either.
In any game if the ref gives you one penalty you should in, if he gives you two there are no excuses.
England had a good chance but they bottled it.
Rashford should have started to stretch the game and challenge the French in behind.

Because Stones was injured, so may as well bring another attacker on than go like for like for 3 minutes.

Lloris is the same height and has also been shit at times for Spurs. Like I said, I don’t really rate Pickford, but Pope/Ramsdale make zero difference to England’s overall tournament performance.

The fact that you compared lloris with pickford means nobody will ever change your opinion

Lets leave it at that.

France got lucky there. They did what they have done under Deschamps which was to defend deep in numbers and look to counter with pace. England I think dealt with them quite well and were the better to side overall but in the end France got that little rub of the green to see them over the line.

England only got themselves to blame missed a couple of big chances that you have to take in the big games and in the end were punished for it.

Sure, I can agree with that. Dechampes might win his second world cup in a week, but it seems incredible to me that he cannot get a team with that much talent to play a better brand of football.

You could probably transplant that post match analysis into every England World Cup defeat since 1966. It's just a nice way of saying we're not good enough.

Chelsea ruined Sterling. No one can convince me otherwise.
Clearly this isn’t true. He was always a terrible finisher but he was given those chances to miss. Chelsea have been feckless for almost a year now. Sterling joining the shit fest simply lowered his confidence nothing else. Wrong signing, doesn’t have the required mindset the club needs at this time.

This tournament opened up ideally for a team to go and grab it. Have to imagine Brazil, Germany, Spain will be stronger at the next, Italy maybe back with a strong team, don't get many chances like this with a team mainly in their prime against weaker than usual competition.

Jeez what a dumb tackle again by France.

Yeah that's the hardest bit to accept,we never seen to be able to take advantage when other teams get knocked out.

I think in the past we haven't been good enough. But tonight I think we were good enough, but unfortunately It wasn't enough it's a bitter pill to swallow really, because France were there for the taking IMO.

So were Germany in 1990. And yet we bottled it because we don't believe. I blame Baddiel and Skinner (yes I know they wrote it in 1996)

Lets leave it at that.

You were the one saying we should have had a keeper with longer reach. Do you think Lloris saves that?

After all the football I've watched in the WC I think England were the best team in the tournament. Too bad they lost a close match. I also think England would have been the hardest team for Argentina to beat so I'm glad from that standpoint because I'm one of the 400 million in the world rooting for Messi to win a WC.

- Rice, Bellingham and Kane were all very good (not counting the missed PK)
- The ref didn't call fouls on at least 6 or 7 occasions against France. After he missed the shove to Mount I started thinking he was biased. Another poor ref in a big game.
- Southgate was good all WC except I'm not sure why Sterling was an early sub given the situation. Really thought Rashford would be first. However, Saka and Foden were playing well in the 2nd half.

This was a missed chance for England as I think they would have been the clear favorites given their performance vs France.

As a team England play without flair or imagination, Southgate stubbornly sticks with players even when they are out of form. He is ultra conservative & it reflects on the way the team plays.

That is your feeling versus mine. I don't see that same fire in England that Morocco now has, same for Argentina. They wins games because they actually believe they can do it.

Best summed up in the first half when there was a throw in for England but the French claimed it and won the case while Saka looked sheepishly at it without getting fired on. You have to be a bastard, none of the English are bastards on the pitch.

England currently has more talent than Croatia , Morocco and Argentina combined but the desire isn't there. At this stage isn't about talent anymore but mentality.

This is also noticeable in the crowd. The fans of Argentina and Morocco are dancing, laughing and singing. They believe nothing can go wrong. The English and Dutch for example are in the stands with fear and tears in their eyes. It is a cultural difference.
