Day 17: England vs Germany | Sweden vs Ukraine (Ro16 7&8)

I can't figure out why you would go to a back 3/5 now. Playing the whole group with 4 at the back, conceeding no goals. If we win, credit to him but it seems a mad decision.

Mentioned this yesterday, similar to france, that these managers are outthinking themselves and just not going with the best formation to get the best out of the players.

We saw how that played out in the first half for france yesterday

Southgate has bottled it.

See you next year lads!

Werner didn't score a boat load but he was always involved, creating space and chances for others.
If Werner scores a match winning goal for us today, I'll buy you a beer if we meet up in London. Come on Die Mannschaft!!!

At least Southgate changes his formation - sth a manager should do. Look at Löw, despite playing bad most of the time he always plays the same system. That is far worse.

England not playing into GErman hands like Portugal is the right move.
But we are. Germany looks dodgy as anything at the back. We have a glorious set of attackers and creative players and he benches them. Germany should be looking their lips.

I'm currently torn between watching the game tonight or the grass grow on my front lawn.

Such a difficult decision.
After the festival of attacking football yesterday Southgate-ball will bring us all back down to earth.

Imagine playing for penalties against a team you always lose to on penalties.

The saddest thing is, we’re not even gonna give it a go, we’ll go out with a whimper & this guy will get a new contract.

Southgate is showing too much respect to Germany. This is a suicidal tactic.

Lose this and it just shows what a coward of a manager he is. I’m expecting us to start bright, miss a few good chances, Kane non-existent again, and then we fade out of the game.

Then he’ll decide to chuck on the attacking players we’re crying out for when were 1-0 down with ten minutes left, panic stations..Germany then make it 2.

Euro 96, the media haven't mentioned it at all this tournament...

I mean just imagine having the wealth of attacking options and not playing any of them

Germany is good against teams that press the attack and can exploit holes in the defense when a team goes gung-ho (see the Portugal match). Southgate made a smart decision, barring any brain farts from defenders or the GK I don't see any way of us scoring.
Believe me, I would have loved to see England play a super offensive lineup, that would drastically increase our chances of winning.

you’d rather play well and get knocked out than play shite and go through?

Why does it have to be one of the other with England? The teams that have gone through have all had attacking intent.

Spain, Switzerland, Belgium, Denmark, Italy etc. all had attacking intent and tried to move as fast as possible.

In fact, I think it is the teams that have been too slow and negative that are the ones that have gone out. They haven't pushed up high enough.

He will get fecked the way we did when Solskjaer tried it against Leverkusen

That side looks absolutely atrocious to me and insanely negative.

I'll be amazed if there is a single goal in this game. It's so likely to end 0-0 that the bookies probably aren't even taking bets on that result.

The best thing that could happen to this game is for Germany to score early, forcing Southgate out of his comfort zone and England into a more attacking formation.

I was talking about the england lineup, sorry for the confusion.
As for germany: This team has been less than the sum of its part for years, I don't expect that to change. At least we're not playing the dreadful Kroos-Gündogan pairing.

On one hand I get what you mean with the England lineup, but on the other this is such a pathetically negative lineup that Southgate might have overdone it and Löw's idea of dominance might work out for once as the English crowd, expecting it to come home, gets restless and puts pressure on their players.

A back 7 home Vs a weak germany team. Southgate has to be the biggest pussy ever.

Whatever the result, he's shown himself to be a coward.

Schweinsteiger and his sidekick interviewing Löw. Kill me.

I mean Croatia and France didn’t exactly play slow and negatively. The German fans are also saying that they’d rather play an attacking England than this one so who knows. We will see after the game.

I think the other outcome is more realistic: Germany will try to "dominate" (i.e. pass the ball from left to right 35 yards away from goal) while finding no way through the defense, then England will score via a simple counter attack within the first half hour. Then they'll really be able to exploit us.

Southgate's going to get a new deal up to Euro 24 .

Like a recurring bad joke.

Not starting Gnabry in London makes this a guaranteed failure from a German perspective. Remember his last games in London??

England have been very disappointing so far at the Euros, a boring watch for the most part.
They have kept clean sheets, but only manged to score 2 goals so far (thats bottom of the list along with Sweden and Ukraine) and they had an easy group.
With all these great attacking players and playing their games at Wembley, England should be doing way more and play better football imo.

Disappointing negative line up again today from Southgate, at least Saka is starting.
Kane better show up today.

Good luck to German and English fans, may the best team win

Remarkable bench.

Sancho £85m
Graelish £100m
Everyones next PM in Rashford
Messi and Gascoigne merged in Foden
and the current king of Chelsea Mount.

Forget Bellingham.

Bet his first sub is Henderson.

What the hell is that line up from Ole Gunnar Southgate. So let me get this straight, in an era where England are blessed with an unprecedented number of attacking options, this guy decides to go with 5 defenders and 2 holding midfielders. Shambles

Croatia did start off that way. They barely left their half until it went 3-1. It was then that they actually pushed forward and started causing Spain a lot of problems, but before that Spain were very comfortable.

The issue is that we have played this formation in the World Cup qualifiers, and we have been absolutely shocking in every game we have played it.

Werner is nailed on to score today after a season of missing the cows arse with his banjo.

I've never known a manager who's tactics reflect his personality so well like Southgate.

Germany is good against teams that press the attack and can exploit holes in the defense when a team goes gung-ho (see the Portugal match). Southgate made a smart decision, barring any brain farts from defenders or the GK I don't see any way of us scoring.

There's a huge difference between going gung-ho and playing EIGHT defensive players. By all means play two defensive midfielders and 4 defenders. What does Low have to worry about? An out of form Kane? 0 creative midfielders? An attacker who has 6 goals in his entire club career?

Conversely, look what France did. They didn't throw men forward as Portugal did, but they still played Pogba, they still played Mbappe and Benzema and Griezmann.

Is this the game Kane finally turns up? Surely he won't go through the entire tournament stinking up the place.
