Day 14: Netherlands vs USA | Argentina vs Australia (Last 16 1&2)

Yep, unfortunately he probably gets a contract extension for making the final 16. Makes me sick.

Should give the job to someone like Bielsa. Available and exactly the sort of skillset he wants from a squad and would have three full years to fine tune it into a QF team.

Deserved win for Netherlands. Always looked comfortable. USA have some talented players but lacking in experience and tactical knowledge. I get the feeling their tactics are the equivalent of spamming the gegenpress in Football Manager except in real life players get exhausted and the space behind your full backs gets exploited. They'll have a better team in 2026. Netherlands vs Argentina (assuming they get past Australia) will be interesting

Lack of any clinical forward player will always hold you back. Same thing again today for US.

Pulisic buries that chance early on, game should be rather different...but knowing Berhalter did nothing tactically different aside from having Adams go wide and drop a CM closer to the backline to help the build up, Netherlands would still be good for their goals.

Lost respectably to a very good team. Very proud of this US team.

United should get any of these Adam and Musah. They stand up against England and Netherland's.

Agreed. Can't forget how young this team is as well. The next World Cup is going to have a lot of potential for the US

58% possession 16 shots and 6 on target.....

the minor details defensively made the difference and it's a tough pill to swallow but a great experience for the players

Pulisic misses a clear chance in the 2nd minute and Holland scores on their first opportunity.
The Americans died there.

Then tactically and emotionally the Dutch were always on top.

A fair victory and the Americans never managed to be the team they had been.

They have talent, they need a better coach for the next World Cup.

Just catching up on the football.

Very naive from the US being done with basic cut backs for the goals. That said they should learn from it moving forward.

Holland look very well organised and will be difficult to beat.

I see them making the semis with Brazil.

Opening 10 minutes of a game you never know how they'll go. But yeah. Their defence has looked woeful, their attack has looked woeful. I like their midfield, but that's all they had today.

US had as many good chances as Netherlands, and dominated the midfield. So Netherlands defence is as bad as US defensively, and their midfield is even worse.

Very happy with the result but holy feck Bergwijn is stealing a living this year both at Ajax and the NT. Absolute garbage.

I do think a change at the top needs to happen given the talent we actually have....we just have to find a bit more depth over the coming years and get a bit more tactically smarter

don't care what anyone says about this final match...the US showed they can play and guys like musah, adams, mckennie, weah showed they are good enough to play on the really big stage against the top players across europe

Definitely fancy them against Argentina or Australia.

USA look bleak at both ends tbh. Don't have a lot of creativity and were picked off easily for the goals

And a lot of those stupid shots were hopeless attempts, Dest' that went out for throw should never be accounted as one

Feck yeah, home you go. Can't believe some really thought they could beat Netherlands.

I know the US had more possession and shots, but it still feels like they were thoroughly outclassed all over the pitch (and the bench) by Holland

Be interesting to see if the Dutch can get away with sitting back for 20 minutes against Argentina.

Australia would be the better match up for Holland, when not looking at the qualities of the players. Australia would get very frustrated against Holland.

haha...true that was a classic attempt. Realistically though, you see it all the time in matches where shots are registered but never really bothered the keeper

US had two one-on-one with Gk, and couldn't finish them. None of Dutch chances were as easy as those.

They were absolutely.

Nice finish from Memphis. Shame Pulisic didn't bury that chance- might've been a more interesting game. The US looked a bit toothless.

I honestly feel like the US are a striker and a creative passer between the lines away from reaching another level. The defensive mistakes were bad today but if they could have been compensated by better attacking, the focus wouldn't much on them

I have a hard time accepting that they were "outclassed" all over the pitch as i think our midfield was every bit the match for the dutch. The Dutch were clinical and the US wasn't.

Pleased for Van Gaal. I know it didn't work out at United but he seems a good guy and has had awful time (with prostate cancer) and his Holland sides are usually involved in good games

Great shout. Feels like the perfect manager to really harness that energy and focus it on tactics that will work.

Beerholder is really outclassed at this level.

I get what you mean, and I can't quite point a finger to what gave me the impression. I have no skin in this game, but if I was a Netherlands fan, I think I would've felt fairly relaxed and comfortable throughout, maybe the first few minutes aside.

If you're toothless up top and disorganised/straight terrible in defense, you won't trouble any top team seriously

At least this is a very likable Dutch team (scouse twat van Dijk aside). I think the US didn’t do its tactical analysis of a LVG team. Not only are the Dutch a foot taller than the US, but also they use DeJong as a stopper, so aerial threats are non-existent and playing through the middle is always blocked. Beat them with one-touch passing, then slide someone in with a ball to feet. Berhalter is pedestrian in his tactics, and if he insists on crosses from the fullbacks as “the” strategy, bring a fecking striker next time!

Striker 100%....we BADLY need to find a quality or two quality #9's. I think we have the creative player in Reyna and to an extent Aaronson. Berhalter just set them up to play a bit like Liverpool does with their mids being the workhorses and letting the front three focus on going forward. Difference is Liverpool have World class scorers and the US doesn't.

agree 100%.....simply b/c we didn't get enough from the front three consistently in the match, just on 2 or 3 occasions. Dutch were smart defensively as they crowded the middle where pulisic likes to play knowing that the US couldn't beat the dutch in the air on crosses with VvD b/c of not having a real 9

Your striker who was subbed and scored was at least visible. He also had a heavy touch for a good chance. A real shame tbh

US can go home with their heads held high. Netherlands just had more quality in the end, easy as. Fun game overall!

I see your points but I feel you’re getting a little carried away.

The team, with the right coach, has potential. Still a long way off competing with the very best sides in Europe though. A lot more than just a number 9 put it that way.

Not sounding good about Pele...

I'm not a fan of this asking questions to people regarding him with a mic shoved in their faces. There's no need, especially in this day and age where everyone has twitter so if I they want to say anything about it they can do it their in their own time and words.

Make a statement, if anyone wants to comment in the studio let them, don't probe people and players to say something.
