Day 14: Netherlands vs USA | Argentina vs Australia (Last 16 1&2)

This is one of the least intense, drama free, relaxed knockout games I've ever seen. USA got the random goal off a fluke finish but like... They've never looked close here
They were totally dominant until the Dutch scored their first to be fair, even Pulisic missing an absolute sitter.

They just lack that killer instinct, a poor pass/shot/touch kills them every time they get forward. The dreadful selection of centre forwards really hasn’t helped on that front either, but Weah and Pulisic should be doing better than they have.

France-Poland tomorrow. Indeed I think England-Senegal will largely go like this match.
Don't forget Argentina vs Australia. That'll be the biggest quality gap IMO.

England vs Senegal i think will be tense. Southgate tends to hold them back in important games and Senegal to be fair to them aren't bad at all. That one will be tight I think

Opening 10 minutes of a game you never know how they'll go. But yeah. Their defence has looked woeful, their attack has looked woeful. I like their midfield, but that's all they had today.

Well, maybe most entertaining Netherlands game so far. If they do this during knockouts that's fine

Mane will be too much of a miss imo, Senegal could get by the groups without him but this is sort of occasion where his world class quality will be badly missed. I expect England to win it in 90 minutes in similar manner to Holland. Senegal will have spells for sure but also missing Gana in midfield who's suspended.

Surely you’re joking. USA have seriously lacked quality and guile, no question, but this has been a hard fought, intense match.
Not at all IMO. It's just looked very comfortable for Netherlands apart from the opening 10 minutes. Never felt like USA were going to score unless it was gifted to them, and Netherlands looked like they could create a sitter every time they went forward. Didn't see that as an intense game or hard fought at all, felt Netherlands could've stepped up a few gears if they needed.

We could get some tasty matches quarter finals onwards

Netherlands vs Argentina
Croatia vrs Brazil
England vrs France
Spain vrs Portugal

The midfield has talent but lacks a bit of discipline I’d say. All three left their runners a fair bit, certainly their strongest position mind.

It makes leaving our most in form striker at home (Holland?) so insane.

Pepi was good during the qualifying....struggled for his club but yes i still think he should have been here just simply b/c he has that goal scoring instinct

We, the English I mean, would be idiots to think the African champions will be a walkover. We huffed and puffed to deal with real pressure applied into midfield by the US. Senegal's pace and power in midfield is lightyears ahead of that. Its great Gueye will be suspended for them but their midfield will really exposed England's inability to play through the thirds. We were awful against Wales for the first 45 and it took Rashford's free kick to open the game up. We may be relying on a set piece again.

Agree with you on Argentina and Australia. If the Argentine's click it could be a cricket score.

Just like Ronaldo is allowed to FK, I don't get it. It's as simple decision
Or when Harry Kane had that spell of taking corners for England. It's just stupid "give best/most famous forward ball and let him do something" logic. Football's version of hero ball. Dumber in this case because unlike Pulisic, at least Ronaldo and Kane have shown an ability to strike a ball cleanly at some point in their careers.

Lost respectably to a very good team. Very proud of this US team.

United should get any of these Adam and Musah. They stand up against England and Netherland's.

All true. It makes no sense as you can actually make a difference with set pieces and you give yourself no chance when you allow certain players to take them

Very meh game. Not as intense as most of the last match of group stage for sure, also no drama whatsoever

Watching pulisic takes every corner and fk makes me irrationally angry

Easy win for the Dutch in the end. Starting Reyna and Aaronson might have helped, but the Dutch would still win. US just lack the experience at this level.

Now that the game with a potential for upset has gone the predictable route, I feel slightly less excited for the next match. Argentina should win comfortably against Australia.
