Day 11: England vs Panama, Japan vs Senegal and Poland vs Colombia

Personally, I expected this England team to fail spectacularly as it was, on paper anyway, one of the weakest squads we have ever sent to a major competition. They have proven myself and a great many others completely wrong. They deserve credit for their performances thus far in the tournament.
They played Tunisia and Panama.... it wouldve been embarassing as they are both down there with Saudi Arabia as the worst teams in the tournament. Still, can only beat what's in front of you, and England have done that comfortably (or should have been against Tunisia but for awful finishing). Both Belgium and England had the same end results.... both just havent been tested. We'll see how they do in the knockouts as thatll be the first real test for both. England will do well IMO, but still doesnt change that Tunisia and Panama are really bad in the first place.

Ashley Young does not look his age. I'd put him in his early twenties.

He's the same age as me, but he looks about ten years younger than me.
This is only relevant to your family and other members of your circle that know how old you are.

Now you have to tell us  and send a picture so we can decide if your post is factual or narcissistic.

Belgium is stronger than both Brazil and Germany. It will be a good test of where this team is.
Still I can see us resting key players in view of the next round.

So far Spain, Portugal, Croatia and Belgium have been the best sides.

Russia have home advantage. France do not look like champions.

But I always remember how Italy in 1982 just scrapped through out of the group stages and won it.

Its the knock out stages that will show who is up for it.

Southgate tbf has put together a decent team.

Lets see if it has the desire and belief.

The analysis has been very sober. You're focusing on a single word and missing the wood for the trees.

I'm not saying all of the coverage is over the top, none of the coverage is tongue and cheek or the entire country is getting carried away - that's a strawman that you like to have hanging around the discussion. What I'm saying is, on occasion, they get carried away. It's inevitable when they're obviously trying so hard to be positive. And when they do you dismiss it and deflect, just like you're doing now.

For the record, in every tournament since 1990 at least one team has scored 5 goals in the group stages:

1990 - Czechoslovakia vs. USA 5-1 / West Germany vs. UAE 5-1
1994 - Russia vs. Cameroon 6-1
1998 - Spain vs. Bulgaria 6-1 / Netherlands vs. South Korea 5-0 / Argentina vs. Jamaica 5-0
2002 - Germany vs. Saudi Arabia 8-0
2006 - Argentina vs. Serbia 6-0
2010 - Portugal vs. North Korea 7-0
2014 - Netherlands vs. Spain 5-1

Netherlands beating a heavyweight Spain 5-1 is incredible. Argentina thrashing a really solid Serbia team 6-0 could be called incredible. Maybe even Spain beating an ok Bulgaria team 6-1 was incredible. (worth bearing in mind the incredible Spain also went out at the group stage

Thrashing a minnow is just not in that realm I'm afraid. It's getting carried away. That's all it is. No big deal.

I'm pretty confident we're not going to win it; but this is the most excited I've ever been supporting England in my 24 years. Great atmosphere and I love it!

At least 2 of the Senegal players with faces like thunder during that dance warm up. That'd be me, miserable bastards union!

Which Chelsea player past or present do I look out for in this one.....

Jeez louise, I can't remember the last time feeling this elated watching England.

What a performance! I'm in dream land.

Tunisia and Panama are like non-league sides. Rio said the same of them in this game.

It's crazy to view beating them as proving anyone wrong.

The teams England have beaten so far are hardly world class opponents but you can only beat what's in front of you - to borrow a cliche - and they have done that very very well. I see something in this team that perhaps the likes of yourself are unable to see due to past experiences. Firstly, there is a clear and concise gameplan in place and the players both believe in it and they are following it through to the letter.

There is a feeling of togetherness amongst the squad (unlike our previous squads who allowed their domestic allegiances to interfere with their national duties) the players are often seen laughing and joking with each other, even the bench was seen smiling and generally content with life. The coaching staff have worked wonders with the players, I'd go as far as to suggest England are the best-coached squad in the tournament. The players are hungry, confident and they believe in themselves, I wouldn't be surprised if we see them reach the QF's or even the semis.

They seem to have a confidence and freedom about them. Past England sides would struggle against these kind of sides.

Just seen the result, didn't watch the game. Kane scored a hat trick ? :D Glad to see Lingard on score sheet as well.

How well did Rashford play ? Did he have any role in those goals ?

Rashford didn't play.

Sterling did, and was again pretty invisible.

I know its only Panama but England look very well-drilled here. It is in a major competition though so its fair to assume that everyone has got extra motivation to impress. The only negative thing from this game is the potential injury to Trippier I think...... I believe is is an asset going forward (attacking-wise) and is crucial as his set pieces are spot on. First of the group before the game with Belgium is great. We will have a great 3rd group game on our hand

Is it possible that a team at the world cup didn't know the rules?

This was done the othe day. Apparently a team can re-start if all 10 outfield playes are off pitch celebrating, look at the picture of Portugal celebrating with one player stood on the line.

Think though Fifa amended the rules.

Southgate decided to show faith in Sterling who underwhelmed again.

Desperate for Sterling to play his way into form, but it just doen't look like happening. He missed another sitter too.

I think Rashford will play against Belgium.

To not start him well but not coming as a sub at all is pretty strange especially as the game looked very open from the result and he could have helped adding more goals with his pace in last minutes.

Hope Japan win, but Senegal is pretty good and i expect their physical advantage to be too much for Japan
