Davide Petrucci

Assuming he didn't leave friends and family for the dosh.

I don't believe at the age of 16 he thought 'I'd prefer to play for an English team than a big club in my own country'

What the feck? We're not just 'an English team'. We are Manchester fecking United. A team that he saw demolish Roma 7-1 in the knock-out stages of the biggest club tournament in the world. A team who has conquered one of the best and most competitive leagues in the world for the past 2 decades. How you can compare United to Roma, in terms of illustriousness, is completely beyond me.

It's actually shocking how many of our own fans down-grade our wonderful club.

We are Manchester United fans. Is Petrucci? Probably not. He's going to be more objective.

I think being out so long will hopefully affect his realistic expectations of progress. He might be in a rush to get back to his best but hopefully doesnt expect to be on the bench and getting gametime right at this minute.

This was a big season for him, his first full season in ages where he has had no injuries to deal with. That was a big step forward for him, and he has progressed well. Think he'll be more involved in first team affairs next season, atleast travelling with the matchday squad. He'll get his chances, of that I'm sure.

I hear this a lot in this sort of discussion. As though you need to be a fan of Manchester United to see the club as anything special.

In reality, United belongs on a pedestal as one of a very small handful of the most successful and prestigious clubs in world football - both historically and currently. This is an objective fact, irrespective of who you support or where you live. I think people are far too quick to play down how big an opportunity it is to play for this club, under this manager, even for kids who may not be born and bred in the area.

Glad he's signed a new deal, he always seemed like a solid prospect before the injuries. I wonder if he'll be loaned out next season.

Talk about misinterpreting a post. I'm certainly not downgrading United - we're currently one of the 2/3 top clubs in world football.

But if you were a 16 year old London kid playing for Spurs, highly thought of by the club, and assured of your progress to the first team, and were then offered a place in the Barcelona academy for the same money, would you leave friends, family and country to take it up? I'd be amazed if Petrucci didn't come to United mainly because of the vastly better financial terms on offer.

That's the chief reason we've been able to poach kids from around the world after all. Of course the prestige of the club is a factor but money is the decisive attraction. Since they found their pot of gold Chelsea and City have done very well recruiting foreign talent as well - and they have no prestige to speak of :smirk:

He's a bit annoying isn't he? Always talks as if stuff are definite.

Yep. Player x is coming to the end of his contract. Player x's agent has a word with Duncan. Duncan writes report saying player thinking of leaving. Player x's club get a bit fidgety and improve their contract offer. Job's a good'un.

He has signed right?

Read his interview where he says he loves it here. Sound level headed too.

It's a bit sad that he was on the fringes of the Roma first team at 17 but still isn't involved yet with pur first team. I know he has had bad injuries and such but its still a shame as he is a great talent. Hope he gets his opportunity

According too darren can on twitter, Petrucci is out of contract this summer and could leave on a freebie.

Surely we arent going to let him go? He has improved alot this year and personally feel he could be a future first teamer. Bit worrying that both Pogba and Petrucci could be on the way for free this summer

The way Petrucci has been talking recently sounds as if he's definitely contracted for next season though, very odd.

I'd be gutted if he went. Not sure on his contract situation though, first I've heard of it. He has had a fantastic season, especially after the unfortunate injury hit seasons previously. Also his run and assist to Will Keane in the Senior Cup was yum

we're not letting him go. Fergie rates him quite highly. Petrucci has talked of going on tour and going on loan next season which Fergie has also said. Pretty sure he's signed a new deal. Just hasn't been announced yet

Cool, that's that then. Forgot about the SAF interview where he listed the players going out on loan.

I take this as a sign that either Petrucci has signed a new contract or it's not up at the end of this year, interesting SAF name drops Zeki Fryers too whose contract was rumoured to be up at the end of this season too. Both signed new ones?

"We have some terrific young players here: [Jesse] Lingard, [Larnell] Cole, the two Keanes, Petrucci, Fryers, Vermijl, [Ryan] Tunnicliffe, Thorpe," he added.

Interesting he doesn't mention Pogba. :nervous:

If Pogba does leave, I'd like to see Petrucci possibly stay and play the CC games and get some looks into the first team. Though if he can get a good loan where he'll start most games that's probably best for him.

Well, he's been subbed off in the last two games for the reserves, which is hardly a good sign. I've heard very little praise from the United hierarchy, and he wasn't even nominated for Reserve Player of the Year, despite having a great season.

So you have to wonder how highly rated he is?

I've always been an admirer, but the question mark, I guess, is over his athleticism - like Eikrem last year (and we know how that turned out). He does seem a bit one-paced, and Fergie's liking for greyhounds is well established.

I think he is pretty highly rated. Will Keane wasnt nominated either.
He is the captain too, isnt he?

Has Davide been tried as a deeper midfielder and if so how has he done?

I reckon he has the passing ability to be a deep lying playmaker. He will need to develop his game to play deeper if he wants to make it here I reckon. Especially if we are signing Kagawa.

There is that. Or we could simply promote him as Berbatov's direct replacement.

It's really hard ask for any youngster to do that job, don't you think ? Some can do the passing bit but when it comes to positional play and reading the game there is no substitute to experience imo. That's why most players mature in to that position rather than break through there.

It will be weird if we do decide to let him go just after he's shown some good form after recovering from a long term injury. I always had fear that he might go the Possebon way but I think he has shown great determination lately so would be unfair to let him go at this moment unless it is for his sake to get first team football.

Yes but with Kagawa possibly coming and Rooney already here he'll find it hard getting games in that slot. Berba himself found it tough. The only slots opening up are deeper in midfield with Scholes and Giggs leaving in a season or two. He could easily do a "Scholes" who also started off as a second striker. Not saying it will happen but just wondering if he's had exposure to the role in the past.

Berba's problem tbf was lack of pace. If SAF use 4-4-2 next season. Me thinks the space for Petrucci would be there i.e Welbeck-Rooney/ Chicharito-Petrucci

The problem with midfield is there is Scholes and Giggs. Anderson and Fletcher returning. Plus Cleverley, Carrick, Tunnifcillfe promoted (if SAF is to be believed) and possibly a holding midfielder addition this summer/Pogba staying.

Yet we might add Kagawa to all that...

Nothing wrong with his athleticism, puts himself about far more than Pogba. The substitutions are probably just Joyce managing his game time, to play as much Football as he has done this year after such a long layoff. He's the reserve captain and I wouldn't read too much in the awards, Oliver Gill won it last year for example.

Pogba's wonderfully athletic, just languid

It is? Why did he sign Carrick and Park?

Hopefully you're right. But he didn't seem too happy last night.

We do sign a lot of pacey players though. You have to assume that reflects Fergie's preferences.

Hopefully you're right. But he didn't seem too happy last night.

it happens. You can read it either 2 ways. He's happy or just frustrated because he wanted to keep playing. He's already said that he's looking forward to going on tour and on loan to get some first-team experience. He hasn't shown any signs that he doesn't want to stay. I think you're just reading too much into it. Petrucci has had a long injury layoff. You want to make sure as a coach that he doesn't get any silly knocks that further hinders his progression. Hence, why Joyce is being careful with him and took him off.

Horse for courses though. Fergie likes quick players (who doesn't?) but pace certainly isn't a prerequisite. This is the manager who signed Sheringham and Berbatov after all. Not to mention the value he's placed on Scholes over the years.

Have we ever actually had a quick central/attacking midfielder other than Anderson? He values other things for that role more than physicality, even our newest recruit Cleverley isn't rapid, it's his speed of thought which seems to be the more important thing.

As for reserve player of the year, you're virtually better off not wining it. Denzil Haroun has ruined more of our youth talents than anything else, only 3 out of 20 odd have had decent careers with us compared to double that for the youth player one.

Well clearly Pogba's quite a physical specimen, I just don't think he has that appetite for both ends of the pitch just yet, he might never develop either but there is definite untapped potential on the defensive side with Paul.
