David Raya

I don't watch Arsenal enough to have a particularly strongly held opinion on Ramsdale but I wasn't under the impression that he's shit, and I definitely don't feel like the gulf in class between Ramsdale and Raya is equivalent to Onana and Henderson/Heaton. In my head it's something like; Onana - elite. Raya - good. Ramsdale - decent to good. Henderson - decent. Heaton - irrelevant.

Onanas distribution is Elite no questions there as a keeper overall we will see.
I would not consider Ederson an elite keeper. From what (limited) i have seen he is closer to Ederson than Allison.
But in any case your pecking order seems about right.

This transfer if it happens it basically is a market opportunity. Swap Turner for Raya for extra 15m or so. There is logic to that. But no team can sustain 2 such good keepers on their book so one will surely leave in 12-24 months. The new deal Ramsdale signed few months back was also an odd 3+1yr deal so there was something there for some time.

Raya is going to cost 40m. Forest is trying to avoid spending more than 10-15m for a keeper.

Yeah I'd guess you'd also be able to sell Ramsdale for 35m odd next summer too, assuming Raya hits the ground running.

I don't think he's an upgrade on Ramsdale, but it provides serious competition and pressure on Ramsdale which could help him a bit to step up more.

Ramsdale is shit, and the arsenal fans are backtracking massively on Ramsdale being one of the best keepers in the league now they’re after Raya

I like Ramsdale, he's capable of the spectacular, and has all the attributes needed to be a top keeper....but he does have mistakes in him, like the Bruno goal last week.

It's certainly not an area I'd be looking to upgrade on this summer, and I'm not sure Raya is that much of an upgrade, but it's something Ramsdale does need to sort out. All keepers make errors, but limiting them sorts the best from the rest.

I think he's slightly better than Ramsdale. But it's hardly like going from DeGea to Onana. It's very incremental for 40 million. Not something I'd do having invested in Ramsdale, surely they would want to back him to improve and look at more important areas of the squad.

Ramsdale will never be a top keeper, I'm surprised many of you still don't see this. He's a decent shot stopper but those are pretty common.

I mean I hope people realise I doubt we pay £40m.

They wanted £40m when there was competition, now most teams have a keeper sorted.

I imagine it'll be £25-30m, and doubt we pay more.

They have his replacement signed and he isn't in the pre-season squads anymore, he's leaving.

I really don’t rate him. He’s a relegation fodder keeper that’s got a move to Arsenal because he’s decent with his feet, I’m not surprised you’re in for Raya because you won’t win anything with Ramsdale in net. He doesn’t have the required mentality, it’s the same for Henderson at United.

Raya is an upgrade, no doubt about that.

People are criminally underrating Ramsdale here

Is he a league winning keeper.. very debatable, probably not. But he's still a very good keeper.

Raya and Ramsdale would be amazing depth. Matt Turner hasn't proved to be strong competition for Ramsdale. Raya is in his prime and I think if Ramsdale (who's only 25 still very young for a keeper) is ever going to be a top keeper, this kind of competition is what he needs. Ramsdale just signed a new contract in May to 2026, so I'm sure the interest in Raya doesn't mean he'll be number 1 immediately.

Don’t spurs want him?

Underrating? He's overrated if anything. He's below average at everything.

Who cares if he's good with his feet when he's even a worse passer than De Gea.

Can't save a pen if his life depended on it either, which is not a great trait for a side hunting for trophies.

I think no one will pay 40m for Raya. If Brentford want to sell, they will have to decrease price, otherwise Raya stays (and perhaps sits on the bench for a season)

Only according to Fab “here we go” who, when somebody who actually has contacts at the club (at the very highest level) called him out for making stuff up, he went after him like a lunatic even calling him up and having a go at him. With some random person claiming to be his lawyer also calling him up and threatening him. The recordings were comedy cold although the one with Fab has been taken down the one with the lawyer can still be heard here - Romano then set his fanboys after the person involved and he got the most vile abuse and had to take his twitter account private.

Anyway to cut a long story short nothing concrete from spuds no.

That’s exactly the case - Flekken has been told he is our number one for the season. If Raya stays he is on the bench at best.

But it’s not like Raya rejects a transfer. There are simply no takers

Rejected interest from Saudi and Bayern (as he didn’t want to go on loan) but the club also rejected Bayern option too.

Well yes, he is far more than a relegation fodder keeper, hence the underrating.

How is he overrated? Have you read the replies in this thread..

They were close last year, spent big again on positions that needed strengthening and City lost some key players like Mahrez and Gundogan, add to that city's fatigue after 3 title runs deep CL runs.

Ramsdale needs competition and personally I think Raya is better than him in pretty much ever department. Good move by Arsenal, they aint pissing around and fair play to them.

Raya would definitely be an upgrade on Ramsdale, but he would hardly precipitate a transformation of Arsenal.

Spurs did ask at the beginning of the window but they never made a bid and then signed a keeper from Italy so I think their interest was very overstated. Overall this is a bad window to be trying to sell a keeper as we are finding with Henderson because supply is far outstripping demand.

Indeed we let our asking price be known then somebody in the process started feeding Romano a narrative of Raya and Spuds had agreed personal terms/close to agreeing terms/will have no problem agreeing terms/had definitely agreed terms (different with each tweet) and Brentford's asking price was unreasonable.....

United and Brentford are in a stronger position than people seem to realise you always want to buy early and sell late in a window as buyers at the end are more desperate than at the beginning of the window. As neither United or Brentford need a new number 1 nor do they need the money it's in the buyer's court to make a deal happen.

Surely they cant keep Ramsdale if they sign Raya, that'd be as stupid as giving Henderson £120k 5 year deal when we have De Gea on £375k a week megadeal.
I presume they'd have both for one season so they can compete for the spot, then the loser will be sold in 12 months time. Maybe they'd even keep them both for two years if there's not an absolutely clear winner the first year.

It's difficult to say if he's better than Ramsdale, personally I don't think there's much in it?

Arsenal seem to have unlimited funds to spend!

Good GK but I think Arsenal should sell Ramsdale if they sign Raya. I can only recall issues for teams that had two strong contenders to be #1 GK. Not that I can recall many of them.

Real Madrid : Courtois - Navas
PSG : Donnarumma - Navas
Liverpool : Mignolet - Karius

I think there was some issues also between De Gea and Henderson for a season or so?

Those were two very weak contenders, to put it politely. Equally bad, though

Assuming we can:
  • Sell Turner for £10-15m
  • Buy Raya for £25-30m
  • Keep them both happy
I'd like to see this happen.

Ramsdale must be one of the most arrogant fecks in the game will be hilarious seeing him replaced

You can’t keep 2 starting keepers happy, does nothing for the player or the team rotating a keeper constantly
