David Moyes | Everton Manager

People seem to forget that he relegated Sunderland while constantly saying that he would just “move on” if he couldn’t save them and distancing himself from any sort of responsibility.

He wouldn’t risk having another relegation on his CV, so I imagine he has looked at this squad and fancies keeping them up comfortably.

Some key players are very old and there are a lot of expiring contracts, so it will be interesting to see what he has been promised and who he brings in.
Agree can’t stand him, hes at his level but Everton are not the Everton he previously managed. They have poor aging defenders and no reliable striker, they could very well go down especially since wolves and Ipswich are starting to look vastly improved. considering they’ve been hanging for last few years they probably deserve too

Is this the extent of Everton's ambition? Another couple of years of plodding mediocrity followed by his inevitble departure.
Avoiding relegation is the immediate ambition, not competing for the title or whatever else you think they should be aiming for. Moyes should be able to do that at least.

It's a 2.5 year contract. It's designed to be a transition job.

Yeah I think it’s sensible to be honest. I said earlier in the thread I don’t think Everton are in a spot to hire a manager to bring in a new philosophy at this moment you need to stay up then build from there

Do returning managers get a new manager bounce?

It's rare enough for previous managers to come back to a former club, and rarer still to have much success, but some examples that come to mind:

Mourinho won the league with Chelsea in 2015 before it turned sour again.

Dalglish took over at Liverpool again when Hodgson was sacked in 2011 and won the League Cup and reached an FA Cup final, but only finished 8th in the league.

Moyes himself came back to West Ham after being previously sacked there, and went on to win the Europa League.

Hope he shows the current defence videos of Jagielka to see how a real defender defends.

First transfer is obvious.

Illarramendi is a free agent. He managed him before, and is the only Scotsman who can say his name beautifully.

I knew Everton will return to him at some point... theyre match made in heaven. When you see Moyes you think of Everton.

Just said to my brother that Moyes will be gone again in about a year when the next fancy name comes along that the new owners fancy to go with their fancy new stadium. Moyes certainly isnt it.

What a joke of a club.

*Europa Conference League (not the actual Europa League) but still undeniably impressive for a club of West Ham's stature.

I expected Everton to survive the drop anyway despite being in truly awful form for so long, and this appointment just strengthens that expectation. Boring and limited choice, but not every team can be challenging for Champions League spots; this is perfect for the present Everton.

Is it really? It is Premier League money versus eastern European clubs, midtable top 5 league clubs and the top 3 of leagues like the Dutch league. If a Premier League club takes the Conference League serious than they should be winning it. Villa should have won it last year. I think there is a good chance that English teams are going to dominate that league.

Very interesting that they're giving him a 2.5 year contract. IMO it seems to heavily imply they see this as a sort of transition job.

Great appointment.
If anyone can take them down you'd back Moyesy to do it.

Hang on now, are you telling me it was a bad idea for United to have given Moyes a six-year contract?!

Even then at the time handing a manager, any manager let alone David fecking Moyes, a 6 year contract was absolute bonkers.

The only sensible option would have been to give him a 6 month contract. Because that's as long as I and a lot of people expected him to last, in the end he managed 9 months.

So you're saying you would have extended Moyes' contract?

:(

10 Years later I can honestly wish him well.
I'm still haunted by being at a mate's wedding the day of that 4-1 away win at Swansea, thinking all was as before.

Then Moyes properly got to work and every week was a this must be an anomaly, we'll get back to normal soon, and never did.
