Can't believe we've let him go for nothing when we could have got 50/60m for him a couple of seasons ago.
It's not like we're exactly made of money is it!

Where did you hear we would get 50-60 million a couple of seasons ago?

He was pretty poor at the start, then became brilliant and then went to fairly average. Seems like a nice bloke. I wish him well, don't know why the club are getting criticised so much, he clearly hasn't been up to it recently and has been making too many mistakes in big matches. Hopefully having a keeper better with his feet can help us progesss our style moving forward.

I've just been wondering, does this not put us in a weaker bargaining position though? Everyone will know we're desperate now for a new first choice keeper so what to stop them adding a couple extra million or so on top of the usual "rate" we get taxed.

Was there no way to keep this quiet until AFTER the new keeper was signed?

De Gea was out of contract, he was free to announce whatever he wanted to whenever he wanted to.

To me, De Gea has become the face of Uniteds deroute. I am happy that he is finding a new club.

There has been times in his United career when he's been brilliant - no doubt about it. But, he's become more and more of a liability throughout the years. You cannot be a United keeper if your only attribute is shot stopping.

Even in his prime years I always had that nagging feeling that he was going to let the team down. Never had that uneasy feeling of uncertainty with Schmeichel or VDS. Same goes for Valdes and Romero.

In the future, when I think about De Geas 12 years as a United goalkeeper, i'm going to remember the ridiculos amount of screw-ups rather than his better periods.

Best United goalkeeper ever? Hell no. Legend? Not in my book, no.

The same victor valdes who played a grand total of two games for us. God this place is such a fecking joke sometimes.

Expected when you look at how Ronaldo is considered a legend even after comparing his first stint at the club to slavery and burning the place down in his second.

This whole saga has really got me disillusioned with a large number of the fan base I must say. Don't want to hear shit about player loyalty coming from United supporters after this at all.

Whatever anyones thoughts about De Gea over the last couple of years, he's been a fantastic servant for Utd. I will actually miss him even though it is time for him to move on. The last title winner in our squad and the last of the Fergie army, truly the end of an era.

Some of De Gea's saves were really unbelievable. The reflexes and reaction time to get to it. That magnetic save from Raphinha that left him scratching his head was phenomenal. Big shoes to fill for the next new keeper.

12 years and 8 trophies
1x Premier League (2012–13)
1x UEFA Europa League (2016-17)
1x FA Cup (2015-16)
2x EFL Cup (2016-17; 2022-23)
3x FA Community Shield (2011; 2013; 2016)

Since Fergie left his saves helped to keep United in the top half of the table season after season, winning player of the season five times is testament to that. Without a doubt one of Manchester United's greatest goalkeepers. He should have got a proper farewell in Old Trafford as a legend of the club...I'm upset that he couldn't get a proper goodbye but he knows Man Utd fans will always cheer for him anywhere he goes next.

Thank you David for many wonderful memories. You’re always one of the true reds and forever a Manchester United legend. Goodbye and wish you the best for your new journey.

Not a club legend though and hardly better than Massimo taibi.

Not sure Dave get's much credit for the Europa League considering he didn't really play in it.

Aye and some people are blinded by the highlight reels.

Including all of his colleagues in football, the league and United?

I'm more tempted to think that our very demanding fans who want every player who makes a mistake to be replaced are just wrong about him rather than believe that the rest of football (including SAF) was somehow fooled for several years.

I know the exact feeling.

The only thing I disagree with you is your observation on Ronaldo. It seems to me that he has lost alot of status/adoration at the club, by ex players, fans, matchgoing fans who sing Viva Garnacho instead. I personally am annoyed with how it all played out because those 6 years he gave us were absolutely incredible and the comments about slavery were dumb, as was chatting with Piers Morgan but I can't forget how good a player for us he was and what he achieved.

I would like to say he has been wrongly advised at times however he is a grown man. I genuinely do think he loves the club but it was a disaster second spell. I understand why some fans won't regard him as a legend and I understand their reasoning but I do.

Nope. Once he's gone, he's gone. He'll never be a yardstick to judge a future keeper by, a one trick pony and possibly the most over rated keeper in the history of the game.

An awful, inaccurate and insensitive statement. One of the worst I can recall reading on redcafe. Awful.

You either make enough saves to be a hero or stay long enough to see yourself become the villain.

Rooney, Ole and De Gea.

Who the feck was paying that for De Gea? There’s only one team daft enough to do that and he already played for us.

Who’s complaining about player loyalty? They go wherever they’re paid the most and have a good chance of winning stuff. You think half of our lot would be here if they weren’t on north of £200k? It sounds like you’re disillusioned with life, not football.

I think even some of his biggest detractors would agree that rather than being the face of our decline, for a long time he was the one preventing it from being worse than it was.

Your memory (and others) of his mistakes is also flawed. I'm not one for stats but De Gea had more clean sheets than both Schmeichel and VDS and that includes the latter two playing for other PL clubs. He also conceded over 40 goals less than he was expected to and carried a save percentage better than just about everyone since he made his debut (all stats taken from the BBC).

It's also not outlandish to say he saved us far more points than he lost us. Significantly more. And not just through his peak years, you can go all the way back to his very first years at United. Go and rewatch the Sunderland game where for obvious reasons, Januzaj takes the plaudits but De Gea was just as big a factor in that vital win with some incredible goalkeeping.

There are several games in every season you can point to that if not for De Geas heroics, we would have dropped points. And yes, there are also games in some seasons where it is absolutely fair to say he cost us points but what some are doing is trying to pin every game changing goal conceded squarely on De Gea which is frankly ludicrous.

That pathetic video highlights this perfectly. Attributing defensive failures to De Gea. In a funny way it's kind of a compliment that some fans expect him to cover the defences backs every single time and will then blame him for not always being able to.

Legend status is of course largely subjective. World class status as well so while I disagree with those who don't consider he is a legend, it's entirely up to the person. The club considers him as one and for many United fans he absolutely is.

I have a sneaky suspicion that for the next few years at least, we will have a lot of fans thinking that De Gea would have saved that whenever there's a goal scores that the new keeper only just fails to save. Replacing a goalkeeper, especially one of such stature is notoriously difficult and rarely does the first replacement make the grade. So there will be a lot of reminiscing from those who appreciated De Gea as well as those that don't.

Final point. 3/10 for the Valdes reference. Really low quality WUM effort. Lindegaard would have been better.

United legend and one of my all time favourite keepers, I wish him nothing but luck with his next step.

What a strange post? Nobody was paying that and nobody would be even close to matching his wages. Also Manchester United generally isnt in the business of selling their best/starting players just to get money.

We were also for most of DdG’s time or let’s say for all of it since Fergie retired a much more defensive side than we were with Schmeichel and VdS. When Schmeichel was at United we won a lot of games by outscoring the opposition. With VdS we were mostly still very attacking but not as much as in the 90s (or early 00s).
Whereas under all managers since Fergie left we were mostly/almost always a rather defensive/little risk taking side which resulted in more clean sheets but at the same time also in low scoring PL seasons.

I owe an apology. I stated yesterday that we turned down 50/60m for de gea a couple of years back.
We didn't obviously, it was only £29m, I can't think for the life of me why I thought he was worth that much.
My sincere apologies.

Utd Legend. At this peak he was the best in the world. That Lukaku save and that Arsenal match will be forever etched in my memory. Thanks for the incredible moments!

David De Gea could save the fecking Titanic!

He was never the best in the world. He wasn't even the best Spanish keeper

I get what you mean but we had world class defense, world class midfield with SAF back then. And we had shit defense, really shit midfield after SAF until ETH. Teams cut through us with ease. Imo he had a lot of clean sheets simply because he's insanely good at shot stopping.

Don't recall posting any video highlights??

I stand by my Valdes comment. I watched hundreds of Barcelona games, and even though he made some mistakes, i'm pretty sure the Barca fans never felt anxious when he was in the starting XI. If you see my comment as a WUM effort, then I guess i'm a WUM.

You can throw all the stats and expert opinions you want my way. But it's a feeling, you know. I never felt safe when DDG was in goal. If you have another opinion that's fine with me.

Agree to disagree.

Even if he wasn't (which I disagree with) the man has left the building don't understand why you lot have to reply with this shite on every post. Have a day off mate.
