David de Gea has left Manchester United

He had flaws, but feck me if his insane shotstopping ability didn't make up for them for most of his career. I wish he'd won more trophies with us, dude deserves to have an overflowing trophy cabinet.

Thanks for the great memories Dave! You've been a bright spot, a dash of colour, in an otherwise bleak time for United supporters.

He was the goalie we needed for the football we were stuck playing. Saved us plenty of times. Thanks for the memories!

Going to be weird not seeing him in the team. While it's probably the right time for him to go, it would have been nice if it had been in better circumstances and he got the sending off he deserves. One of the best keepers United has ever had and definitely a legend. Saying otherwise is strange to me as he was consistently considered a rival for Neuer (considered one of the greatest ever) as best keeper in the world for a solid 5-6 years so there is some serious underrating of him in these threads.

The last leftover from the big era is gone. He played like a relic anyway, increasingly a mismatch for modern football. It's tough to say, but he didn't leave a moment too soon.

But of course he is a legend, our best player for many years, on different level to anyone else in the side. He often was the only world class player in a mediocre team. He pulled of so many saves, noone else could do. In his prime he left me stunned so many times. It was beautiful, thanks for the memories. All the best for him, I really hope he can continue his career at a good club for a couple of years.

Absolutely atrocious post from you considering you have been a forum member since 2009

You should know better.

You have to understand that this is a tough time for some posters on here. Emotions are running high, they have defended Dave for years on here, gone through many shirts and posters on the wall. End of an era type of stuff. They would rather him in goal than an upgrade and us improving as a team and club. It is a shock, but it will pass and they will realise soon the club is better off without him. Or they start supporting his next club. Either way, he is gone and we move on to a better GK hopefully.

He's not wrong though. But definitely should have used some other more subtle way to say that.

His career started badly (he was never the commanding presence of his predecessors), he had a good/very good middle period and ended poorly (he never learned to dominate the six-yard box let alone the penalty area or come for crosses). I wish him success but this is the right decision: he is not in my top three United keepers during my life time

This hurts. An end to an era.

Best reflexes i have ever seen. But it will be nice to switch to something different now.

You saved our bacon many times. Good luck Dave. Great guy. Thank you

What are you trying to get at sorry?
. . .
I think if his wage were more reasonable they’d have just triggered the extension already & it would have been rolled onto the end of next year.

Only reason we didn’t trigger it was because the wages were ludicrous, they’d have triggered long before the terrible end he had to the season if he were on say £150k a week.
.

I just checked. He was in the PFA team of the year 5 times (4 times in a row), Uniteds players player of the year 4 times and made the world 11 once. Amazing how so much of the football world (including the actual players) thought he was brilliant when some Caf posters disagree. Who to believe?

Some of our fans have the memories of goldfish.

Aye and some people are blinded by the highlight reels.

His reflex saves blinded people to how poor he really was at all the other aspects of being a keeper. There was a time when he was very good because his reflex saves, covered his deficiencies in other areas, so they weren't talked about that much. He's never been good in the air, never commanded his area or his defence, never been good enough at sweeping and never been good enough on the ball, his distribution has always been quite limited. In 12 years, not one weakness was addressed or improved significantly. When you think about it, It's actually mental that this was allowed to happen.

Superb goalkeeper and a great servant to the club. World class for several years. All the best, Dave!

It hurts to see him go but at the same time its the right time.
Thanks for all the great moments De Gea.

I really hope he gets a good club after this, he deserves it.

In fairness his weaknesses were being worked at at one stage, but according to the goalkeeping coach of the time (Hoek) he moaned like hell about having to work outside of his comfort zone and then the club allowed him to pick a new goalkeeper coach of his own choosing (Alvarez) and he reverted to type overnight.

After a rocky start he was very good through to 16/17, peaking in 2017/18 when he was excellent. After that he fell off a cliff.

His status has benefited from us being a poor team (relative to pre 13/14) for most of his time. Lots of shots to save, few standout performers in outfield. Just like the GK is often player of the year for relegated teams.

Time to go but he should be remembered well.

David De Gea is a Manchester United legend. He is the most spectacular GK I’ve seen playing for us. Insane shot stopping.

Thank you for all the memories, Dave. Thank you for being with us.

I have not been following the news so I am wondering if there are any leaks regarding the reasons for this.

If we was not offered a new deal, I might just regain some faith in the squad building strategy.
It seems he was made an offer in the middle of the season, to which he agreed he would be happy with, then his form went to shit in the second half of the season so Ten Hag wanted to change the terms to backup keeper instead of first choice and bring in a new keeper. De age was made a new offer with lower terms than the previous one, still very good wages for a backup GK. United wanted to have face to face discussions this week when everyone was back but it seems he’s decided to just walk away instead.

People at the club were under the impression he would sign and extend his stay, or that’s the vibe they were getting anyway.

It feels like the club sometimes offers these supposedly lowballed contract renewals for unwanted players while knowing they wouldn't accept it. I'm not sure what's the purpose here but the same also happened with Pogba and Lingard.

I genuinely despise how poor the club is at seeing off its legends and servants that are worthy of a proper farewell.

Was one of my favourite players, definitely up there with the world’s best at some point but last few years while he was still good, his performances did drop a lot.
Still a good keeper for someome and wish him all the best.

Yeap I remember him saying that, and to be fair during that period be was better at certain aspects. Alvarez was also friendly with Jorge Mendes, Jose's and DDG's agent at the time. So it was jobs for the boys as Roy would say.

Well said.

It would seem that some posters have failed to realise that this is NOT the David De Gea appreciation thread, it is simply a thread gauging people's reactions (opinions) to the news that he has left the club.

Of course some posters will have different opinions from others, and some may agree with an opinion and some may disagree with an opinion, but at the end of the day that is all they are - opinions, and some posters fail to grasp that.

To me, De Gea has become the face of Uniteds deroute. I am happy that he is finding a new club.

There has been times in his United career when he's been brilliant - no doubt about it. But, he's become more and more of a liability throughout the years. You cannot be a United keeper if your only attribute is shot stopping.

Even in his prime years I always had that nagging feeling that he was going to let the team down. Never had that uneasy feeling of uncertainty with Schmeichel or VDS. Same goes for Valdes and Romero.

In the future, when I think about De Geas 12 years as a United goalkeeper, i'm going to remember the ridiculos amount of screw-ups rather than his better periods.

Best United goalkeeper ever? Hell no. Legend? Not in my book, no.

He is very wrong. De Gea has cost this club in many big games and people are calling him a legend. I am baffled by this. He had 5 exceptional seasons. The team was horrible in all of them. He had 7 average-poor seasons.

Just because he has been here a long time, and played well for a few seasons, does not mean that we have to excuse the shocking performances we have seen in the last 5.

I thank him for the good seasons he gave us. I wish him the best and hope he finds another good club to join. I'm still very happy he has left. It's been long overdue.

He's probably the best shot stopper in the last 20 years imo with his incredible reflex. At least after Peter Schmeichel I haven't seen anyone better.

He is not suited to our current style, is no longer in his prime and his last couple years was not good but we should not forget the countless times he had saved our ass. He's the last of the team under SAF and with him leaving hopefully a new era would open for us.

Thanks for everything and all the best again. You'll forever stay as one of my United favourites.

Not sure if anyone posted this but an interesting read.

"Since De Gea's United debut, his 72% save ratio in the Premier League is only below Cech, Liverpool's Alisson and Newcastle's ex-Burnley keeper Nick Pope (of players to make 100 or more appearances)."

"Since De Gea's Manchester United debut, he conceded 426 - but the expected goals from those shots totalled 467, meaning he effectively denied an extra 41 goals.

Only Tottenham's Hugo Lloris denied more in that time, 48 (380 goals from 428 expected goals)."

And for those harmed by De Gea, one for you to get your teeth into

"In that time, De Gea ranks sixth for errors leading to goals with 17. Asmir Begovic is top with 25, followed by Lloris' 24."

There was many a game in the last several seasons where I thought I don’t want to see him playing for us again.
Ducking out of challenges, failing to go for crosses, flapping at the ones he went for instead of comfortably catching them, all leading to soft goals, and last seasons FA Cup final display was bloody disgusting.
Remember how Fergie treated Jim Leighton? We have had weak managers recently and a board who interfered too much in football matters, De Gea should have gone years ago.

I don't deny the negative side of his time here but imo people who could only remember the negative things but forget about all the good things someone has done for them are true shithead. Like my ex.

Mixed feelings, sad to see a truly great goalie and a club legend leave but at the same time glad we're finally going to have a more modern goalie.

The double save against Arsenal and the last second tip-over against Everton will always come first to mind when thinking of DDG, but also the goal line hugging which caused me a lot of gray hairs.
