David De Gea Appreciation Thread

De Gea is twice the keeper Onana is. I couldn’t give two shits that Onana is twice the midfielder.

League winners Face 70 shots a season = your defence give oppo striker almost no space to breathe, angle of attack and most aspects help make those 70 shots likelier to save.

We Face 145 shots a season = defense is lax and you Face more tough shots and more of them. So many shots and harder ones.

DDG 70+% saved. We as a club made him look worse but paid him handsome for it.

DDG should be judged on these premises.
He was WC for us to the very end and masked glaring holes with us.

Thank you DDG! Miss you.

Bring back Dave. I don’t care. Swallow humble pie.

Getting him back in would be like City going back for Joe Hart after Bravo shat the bed. Even if Onana does turn out to be our version of Bravo, it's not the answer.

The beauty of time. You know what De Gea did in his very last European game right? How about his very last game for us in the FA Cup?

He was world class but not to the very end.

Ah the revisionism of this place is hilarious. Last season De Gea cost us the Europa League semi final and Fa Cup final and that was just last year. He’s been full of mistakes since the 2018 World Cup and was that one season he cost us top four by letting every long range strike go in the back of the net.

There’s a reason he’s considering retirement.

I'll always be fond of DDG, one of the best in the world when he was at his best around 2015 or so. Sadly he's not that keeper anymore and it was the correct decision to move on. Don't forget he refused to sign a contract extension.

He is 10x the keeper his replacement is. FA cup I mostly blame Varane, for both. Fans here want to scapegoat DDG when in fact we have had bigger issues, mainly inability to score.

He was not anymore. Honestly I think a lot of you have forgotten how many mistakes De Gea made last season. He is finished now and we needed to move on.

We are talking here about a keeper who has been available for free and yet no takers. A goalkeeper whose national team haven't called him for about 5 years now in favor of the likes of Kepa and Unai Simon. He was made to look good because his one skill shone in a terribly underperforming side where that skill was called upon more often than it should ever be for a club with our aspirations. Even if Onana is not the answer, DDG most definitely did not and does not belong anywhere near a club of our ambitions.

Memories sure are short when it comes to football.

Yep. People forget that De Gea made as many major blunders leading to goals in his first 2 games last season as Onana as made in his first 10 games now.

Onana is already on thin ice, of course, but the cries to have De Gea back are insane.

Except stats hold him as top4 tier.. and point to defensive issues elsewhere. He might not be worth or able to match £375k/w but that's not his fault.

last season De Gea had issues, when ETH played him as a sweeper keeper. yes, but the reflexes on that guy.. and do we really get any value out of Onana´s ability to run out of the field. nomatter what modern football is, shotstopping, reflexes should be no.1 and getting rid of a golden glove winner, was just plain stupid.

To be honest, i would have picked Kasper Schm... up as a reserve when i got Onana, he was free, had the age. and would have been a good backup, because Onana needs a few matches on the bench.. he needs to reevaluate.

Im not calling for DDG to return but the first two games last season is a bad example, the whole team was dogsh it bad, we didn’t lose because of DDG.

But Onana has only played a handful of games and he’s made savage errors that have cost us games. He’s got no credit in the bank, so nobody can say DDG would be better or worse yet.

Id give Onana time as the team is struggling badly, but I wouldn’t be confident saying he’s a far better upgrade on DDG, he might prove to be but he hasn’t so far.

Nah, it's not getting rid of him that would have been stupid. That would involve a new contract, doubling down on the previous stupid decision to make a keeper who is clearly not good enough the best paid keeper in the world.

De Gea had to go.

Whether Onana was the best available (never mind best value!) keeper to replace him is a completely different discussion.

Had no issues with him had the odd mistake that cost us.. the good out wayed the bad.. I've no time at all never have for the new keeper..

Onana is the better player but De Gea is the better keeper.

Am I doing this right?

The simple truth.

Agree.

There's a reason he's still without a club too. Every top club knows that he is past it.

We need to move forwards not backwards.

Whatever the question is, David De Gea is not the answer.

DDG has never been the same player after the 2018 World Cup. But even before then at Euro 2016 he was also the most error prone player in the group stages.

It was the 2018 World Cup though which affected him mentally and he's never consistently been the same player since.

Let's not forget the Europa League final where he faced loads of penalties, was it over 10? And he didn't save a single one.

If you included those penalties along with others before/after, he faced something like 30-40 penalties without saving a single one. Whereas prior to the 2018 WC he actually had a modest record at saving penalties.

Then a few seasons ago when we were chasing champions league qualification and top 4. Possibly OGS first half season, I cant fully remember. But he made lots of costly errors in the final run of 6 games or so and effectively cost us qualification.

And throughout this period he was the highest paid gk in the world too. Earning 300k or more per week?

DDG is a great servant to the club and a loyal player he deserves to be remembered fondly. But for the last 5 years he's been a shell of the player he formerly was and a hugely overpaid one too.

Why does he not even have a new club already? Is it because of his wage demands?

David was a great servant to the club and one which will be remembered as a loyal servant who turned up when other players didn't. But he's not the player he used to be and he isn't the answer to the problems we have right now.

Not only that, this was a season with particularly high demand for goalkeepers. Bayer, Real, Arsenal, Chelsea and Inter all were actively looking for a new goalkeeper. Not to mention many other non elite clubs. These clubs chose to spend money or stick with what they have instead of going for free agent DDG. His national team trust Kepa, Simon and whoever shows good form under many different managers over him. The ABU overrated DDG because there is no bigger backhanded compliment to a team than praising their goalie. It's like when a manager at the end of a game blames a defeat on how the opponent's goalie was man of the match. DDG could make a worldlie save here and there at his peak but that was literally his only world class quality. Not even close to good enough.

What like the EL semi final and cup final ?
Yep.. Still better than this new guy who's couldn't save a empty bag of crisps floating through the air.. ETH had made a massive error with this guy and it could cost him..... I won't change my mind on Onana until he does it for me by being better somehow I don't see it happening , maybe when the defence is all fit ? Even then I still think he's not a good keeper... Massimo Taibi was from the Italian league as well and touted as one of the best..

Well in theory yes. The less chances the opposition has the less feck ups he can make.

I can’t believe how many genuinely want him back
Onana might not be the answer
Ddg is defo not the answer

People keep saying ddg is 10x better than onana, but ddg was not good enough

Mignolet might have been better than karius
Hart might have been better than bravo
But they don't go back, they go forward

Last season it was De Gea who gave En Nesyri an open goal in the Europa league to knock Man Utd out. The same way he let Said Benrahma’s shot through my hands. It was De Gea watched Gundogan’s volley go past him in the FA Cup final.

Yes, He was the one who fumbled Josh DaSilva’s shot from outside the box into his own goal. De Gea was the one who looked between his legs as Conor Coady knocked it in on the goal line. Remember the man who held 7 at Anfield?

How about 6 at the Etihad? It was him who watched Welbeck play across the 6 yard box to Solly March. He was also the one who fumbled Solly March’s shot into the path of Pascal Groß. He was also responsible for snookering Eriksen with his distribution vs Brentford, and matched it with his distribution to Maguire vs Sevilla.

He stood by and watched Saint Maximin head it across goal to Joe Willock for a tap in. He single handedly trained the ball boys to have the endurance of marathon runners by simply chasing his distribution. And he accomplished all that in JUST THE 22/23 season.

I can’t believe how many genuinely want him back
I can't believe how many people are still underestimating him.
Guy had some blunders (like every gk has) but for every shitty game, he had 4 or 5 games when he would literally save us with amazing saves.
But yeah, who needs gk who saves shots? Did you see those short passes to Evans and Maguire?:drool: That is proper goalkeeping.

He was a good player for us once, faded a lot towards the end and there’s a reason why he’s still a free agent after three months.

Please do enlighten Us then why the heck He is still without Club and don't have Clubs lining up for his services .

Just because Onana has been Gash doesn't by any mean prove that decision to let De Gea go was wrong .

It means exactly that. Read with understanding. I never said that we didn't need better gk. Of course that there are better gks around. I am talking about the fact that we released good gk (and De Gea still is and was good gk) and spent 50 mil on top of that to have worse gk than we had.

Getting him back in would be like City going back for Joe Hart after Bravo shat the bed. Even if Onana does turn out to be our version of Bravo, it's not the answer.
De Gea is not Joe Hart

Well no, Joe Hart was given a contract by a Champions League club.
One is playing in the UCL whilst the other is playing PlayStation on Tuesday nights
Jeez. it's only Celtic, who'll probably be pumped in every CL group game. I doubt de Gea would've lowered himself to their level and would prefer his PlayStation Tuesdays.
