Manuel Neuer is so good that he's heading home from Russia. He's probably been even worse that De Gea this World Cup but for some reason that gets overlooked.

To put it another way, can anyone remember De Gea ever coming out of his box to clear a football? And it's not as though Neuer is the only keeper in the game to do this. Lloris and Ederson would be two other good PL examples (that's how Ederson got Mane sent off) De Gea is very clearly at the opposite extreme and would be a better keeper IMHO if he took a bit more responsibility when it comes to sweeping up behind his defenders.

I seem to remember that early in his career and under LVG, De Gea was a lot more willing to play out of his box. It's in the last two years that he has been more conservative.

Yeah, I remember him coming out of the box during Van Gaal time

It's a flaw in his game I noticed from day one. Earlier on he was even spending too much time rooted to his line when the ball was in his box.

Recently he's got better at commanding his area but he's about as likely to step outside his box as he is to step on the surface of the moon.

My issue with De Gea at this tournament hasn't been about him marching out of his box to sweep up in a Neueresque fashion, it's been the age-old commanding of his box. Though I feel he's improved to a certain extent for United his understanding with Ramos and Pique seems to leave a lot to be desired. A few times against indifferent opposition Spain have been all over the place when a ball is played half-competently into their box.

I was going to say that it's not that big of an issue but thinking about yesterday, Courtois has the same flaw and it puts a little bit of pressure on the defense because the goalkeeper doesn't anticipate back or bad passes. I was also very tense when Mandanda was in a position to receive the ball against Denmark.

Yeah, to an extent it’s a stylistic thing but it’s still an important part of a keeper’s arsenal. A keeper who is hesitant coming off his line is a bit like a striker who won’t compete for headers. They can still score a shit-load of goals - and nobody is expecting them to be Peter Crouch - but at least try and work on that part of your game. Short-arses like Messi, Jesus and Aguero have shown that it can be done.

Sometimes he will not even come off his line, never-mind out of the box. There was one situation last year, cant remember who against(maybe Everton?) but Smalling is trying to shepherd the ball back to him, left side of the Utd box, deflected cross from the opponents right side. Smalling running, walking by the end, back towards him with his hands down in that typical come get the ball signal to a keeper. Dave refused, and Smalling ended up having to kick it out for a corner probably from inside the 6 yard box, nearly on the byline.

He is an amazing keeper, pure shot stopping ability the best I have ever seen, but that is not all there is to his job.

Yeah, there’s been a few occasions like that. Can’t remember ever seeing him getting hurt by coming out and taking man and ball, for example. Which is an occupational hazard for his position.

Again, mainly a stylistic thing but something he should work on to be a more well-rounded keeper.

De Gea has hardly looked great for Spain whatsover like he does for Man United on a very consistent basis for years in EPL.

Btw, DDG is a great GK but is unfortunately not world class.

Also, DDG needs to replicate his form in Champions League by being decisive in KO-stage (made a poor error vs. Sevilla) and for NT.

World class and consistently Utd's best player. Give him the captaincy.

fecking hell, it's a penalty. Chances of scoring is very high.

And people pretend they don't have a massive agenda when they'e tying to blame a keeper for not saving a penalty :wenger:

Never seen any other goalkeeper be criticised for not saving more penalties other than De Gea. A situation where the taker has the utmost advantage and many players can take a penalty which is literally impossible to save, this particular one being a penalty which De Gea isn't saving even if he goes the right way.

Keepers save poorly taken penalties. A truly well taken penalty is impossible to save, given the trajectory of the ball and the close proximity to goal.

Is being good at penalties even a thing for keepers? Sure they get lucky now and again and guess the correct way, but it’s not a skill that you can just improve.

If the striker sticks it right in the top corner or into the side netting, then it’s not being saved even if the keeper does guess the correct way.

Van der Sar also never saved penalties until later in his career so there is no reason DDFG cant add it to his game. With defenders like Rojo and Jones in front of him him he is going to get enough practice at stopping penalties.

Blaming any keeper for not saving a penalty is a bit daft.

Strikers should pretty much score every time. It's all on them. Pretty sure researchers studied it and confirmed it.

If you're a good penalty taker the only way a keeper is making a save is if you cock up your shot. no matter how "good" at saving penalties they are.

It'a utterly bizarre to give a goalkeepeer abuse for not saving a penalty. Especially when the actual player who gave the penalty away is getting less shit

No one blaming De Gea. His penalty saving record is truly bad ( Below 20%).

Not worth a bump though. We all know that
