he will come good, of that i have no doubt. however at the moment i must admit that when someone shoots from range i hold my breath

To be honest, Van Der Sar's distribution is a bit overrated. Especially in the latter portion of his time with us, he would foil many counter attacking opportunities by hoofing the ball up the pitch when the attackers haven't even returned to their positions yet.
VDS was amazing with the ball at his feet. He was unflappable and I can count on one hand the amount of times he looked in danger of being caught out. He was better at that than De Gea has shown so far.

However, what VDS actually did with the ball in terms of distribution does get over-rated at times. Regularly cleared the ball up field where our strikers would almost never win the battle against the defenders, despite having midfielders or defenders in positions to play the easy pass to. This is where De Gea does look like he may have the edge.

You thought his handling of the ball was good? Not at all concerned with the shots at him that he was spooning back into the danger area?
His handling was inconsistent. There were at least two times where he plucked shots out of the air and held them where I would expect most keepers just to push them out wide. One of them in particular even VDS would probably not have caught. I saw him do the same for Atletico last season, so it's something he obviously does have the ability to do.

However, a couple of times he did spill or struggle to take shots that should have been gobbled up. So it's something that he obviously needs to keep working on, but given time there's no reason to think he won't get there.

Schmeichel hits back at De Gea criticism - ESPN Soccernet

Manchester United goalkeeping great Peter Schmeichel has backed under-fire David De Gea to prove his worth at Old Trafford.

David De Gea, who joined United for a reported transfer fee of £17.6 million from Atletico Madrid this summer, is under the microscope after some shaky early performances between the posts for the Red Devils.

However, the 20-year-old goalkeeper looked more solid against Tottenham in United's 3-0 win on Monday and Danish legend Schmeichel believes there is much more to come from him, given time.

"He's very unfairly, in my opinion, been criticised, even before he played his first game," Schmeichel told Five Live Sport. "I wouldn't say he's made massive mistakes."

Schmeichel added: "I thought he showed tremendous character in the game against Tottenham the other day. He wasn't fazed by being at Old Trafford.

"Everything he did was good - his catching, distribution was spot on. I think he has learned something.

"He's only young and it takes a little bit of time to adjust to the kind of football we play in the Premier League, the kind of players you play against and the kind of referees we have, who allow a lot more physical contact.

"He needs to learn and I think he has a great future ahead of him."

I am the same a little bit, but even with the great VDS I did the same

However, the way he caught some of the shots that came in as opposed to parrying them...

Personally, with the knowledge of goalkeeping i have (which is none), it seems he loses concentration a bit. Against Spurs, when it was 0-0 and the game was on the line, he was flawless. It was only when it got to 2 or 3 - nil that the fumbles started to come in. That is, when the game was over. Maybe he just relaxed a little.

Maybe the same could be said with the WBA goal he conceded, as we seemingly had control of the game and he hadn't had too much to do up until then.

Just a thought....

put any goalkeeper in our goal and it will be the same for me, even during pre season friendlies, against MLS oppositions.

give de gea a bit of more playing time, he will get better when he understands the english game better.

A lot of people outside of united seem to forget that he is only 20! How can you possibly critistise someone playing in that position at that age. From what I've seen so far he is going to be some keeper in years to come.

Yeah, when I tell them he's 20, they tell me he cost £17m.

You know, they know the best...

I hate those people, but - thank God - I can see now who knows nothing about football.

I got told on thursday that alex ferguson must have watched the arsenal game on wednesday night and sat wishing he had bought szczesny and not de gea, he also claimed the de gea is shit, will never make it and was a complete waste of money

He mentioned about he watches loads of spanish (and italian) football and brought up the fact he conceded however many goals from long shots last year, to which i replied that if he knew as much as he thought he does he would know he also saved more long shots than any other keeper in spain and that he must watch the games with his fecking eyes closed as i could see from just a handful of games that i saw last year he was going to be a great keeper, i then offered to bet the guy £20 that he keeps more clean sheets than the wonderful szczesny this year, he then backed down from it and claimed that it wasnt a fair bet as we have a better defence than arsenals, he then came up with the great theory that i was only defending de gea because i knew he was shit, he was right to say it and it hurt, to top it all off the guys a leicester fan

That's what I love about bragging spastics, everyone and their dog is quoting that fecking "OH HE'S CONCEEDED MORE GOALS OUTSIDE THE BOX HURR DURRFFF DURRR" because of Jamie fecking Redknapp.

1. 20 year old
2. Playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world
3. Has played a handful of games
4. Cannot speak english fluently yet.

Add those points together, and I think captain obvious would state that the boy is allowed to be nervous.

But to judge so early? Typical. but fecking silly.

Very, very silly..

My favourite De Gea rant so far was the one by Patrick Barclay on The Game two weeks ago.

Criticism for his mistakes is fine but Barclay basically said that he was a charlatan who had duped Sir Alex Ferguson into signing him and that Ferguson's scouting staff were idiots who had the wool pulled over their eyes.

Fantastic player and comparing him and Szecnznernencxnznynceny at this point is not appropriate. Two young and promising keepers who are a decade away from their prime.

I have full faith in de Gea and I'll be rooting for him, if anything for the sole purpose of showcasing his skills. He's been harshly done, but I have little doubt he will repay Ferguson's faith.

Come'on David!

I don't think anybody is judging just yet but obviously there are going to be concerns as the mistakes he has made have been very basic. That said for the 2 low shots he missed, if you watch them again it's almost like he is trying to just get there just in time and make them look spectacular saves (hense jumping to high and going down to the ball in phases).

Trying too hard to impress due to the few shots he is getting to save in a match? Very possibly.

Ultimate sign of a retard to think that means anything really.
Needs to be put into a percentage or a ratio to be useful. He could have also had more long range shots on goal to save...

its like having a keeper who you say is brilliant at saving penalties because he saved more than anyone else, but he had 20 penalties to save and got to 2/3 of them.

I am freaking ecstatic we went with this lad rather than Steklenburg or anyone else. Freaking love this fellow.

Feck ? De Gea, again :( Right through his legs.
Did well to save the pen and the double save later, but should've saved that one :(

He's young and therefore prone of making silly mistakes. If we're not ready for such things then we shouldn't have signed him in the first place.

I don't think he could've done much tbh, where the feck was Evra?

Forget the goal, his first half performance so far has been great.

Could not have done much? It went right through his legs. I agree with the mistake the defense but it was hit straight at him. He should be making a routine save on that one.

raphael honigstein
main culprit not De Gea but Evans

Was all going so well. But thats a bad goal to concede. Yes we did not defend it correctly, but he was unable to sort his feet out and should have saved it

I'm sorry, you can't just 'forget the goal'. He was great all half but it's yet another mistake. Not losing patience at all, but would have been great if he could have had one proper quality performance to give him some confidence.

soft goal but still a great performance by him so far

poor defending by us. i say it is 70% defender's mistake (not sure who until i watched the highlights again) and 30% de gea. a savable shot but we never should had allow that.

It is a soft goal because his reaction levels are not optimal yet.He is a little too slow to move but stuff like that can get corrected specially if you have great talent like him
