Seriously, at what stage do we label him a world class 'keeper? I think he's world class already to be honest.
He already is. Regardless of how people define it.
A twenty-three year old world class 'keeper, he is outstanding.
The only way is up for David. He may very well go down as our greatest ever goalkeeper.
I also think he may prove to be a better keeper than Casillas and Valdes, despite(especially Casillas's) legendary status, due to the vast improvement he's shown since moving to England in terms of physicality and dominating his area, a skill which neither of them possess.

I was already there last year, as I'm sure many others were too. It's just a matter of time when the media start doing so too. They just can't seem to shake off his first season performances.
With regards to him going down as our greatest ever 'keeper, I've no doubt he has the talent to do so but unfortunately it is likely he will return to Spain someday, it will be difficult for him to eclipse van der Sar or Schmeichel playing in his prime elsewhere. Still, what a feckin' goalkeeper he is.
I'm optimistic enough to think he might just stay here his whole career. He seems fairly happy, at least! We should just throw money at him in comically large bags if he ever flirts with Barca/Real.

He's world class because I don't believe there's anyone better than him currently in the world. The best in his position surely defines world class. Maybe Courtois is on a par but I have obviously seen more De Gea matches.
He should be the first person to get a new contract this summer, it is vital that we keep hold of him.

It's not only that he's one of the best around at the moment, he's an exceptional keeper full stop.
The only other player I can think of that has seen their weakness and worked on it/got rid of it like De Gea is Ronaldo. I guess it's the mark of Champions.

I still reckon Del Bosque will opt for Lopez, I'd love to be wrong though. It'd be a great experience for de Gea, and well deserved.
Even if De Gea was chosen, he’d still be third choice behind Iker Casillas and Pepe Reina but simply being part of the squad will be the next big step for De Gea, so the sooner it happens the better.

I can't imagine Del Bosque making Lopez his first choice, he will keep Casillas as No 1. Therefore it makes no sense to take Lopez if you consider future options. De Gea was called up as 4th choice goal keeper in their extended 30 men squad for the Confed Cup 2013 (not Lopez) and in the WC 2014 qualifiers when Casillas was injured he was called up as 3rd choice (again not Lopez). So it will be a bit weird to call Lopez now all of a sudden, someone who hasn't made the Spain squad since 2009! But with Del Bosque, you never know.
The smart thing to do is to start to phase out the older generation and blood in the next one.
De Gea will probably jump straight to first-choice once Casillas goes, so I'd imagine he'd go.

I think we need to enjoy him while he is here because at some point he will want to move home. From what i have read it hasnt been easy for him and I doubt we will have him for his entire career, I think he will want to move back to Spain in the next 3 or 4 years.

Welcome up! And this is literally the best thread for your first post here. This or the Mata one. I love these Spaniards! And I am fairly confident we'll be tying him up to a new deal fairly quickly, having Mata here will definitely make sure that if he had any thoughts about leaving, they are gone now.
Where have you read that he is still struggling to adapt? From whatever I have read, he seems happy as a bunny here now.
I said it hasnt been easy for him and there are numerous articles regarding his girlfriend living in Spain, his difficulties with diet and training, his frequent trips home on days off etc. He is probably very happy right now but I think he will want to head home at some point. He is living in a completely different culture to what he grew up in and at his age its not easy. As he gets closer to being the best keeper in the world the 2 big Spanish clubs will come calling and the pull of home will kick in even more. I would expect that to be when he gets to the point of wanting to start a family etc. Being home sick hits at different points in your life for different reasons. Been there done that.
I know. I am currently in a similar situation and would run back home if given half an opportunity. But I hope to God you are wrong in this case!

With Ter Stegen moving to Barca, they wont be needing a GK for a while. Real would need a GK soon but with his Atletico roots, he wouldnt want to move there?

Is the rivalry between Atletico and Real Madrid as strong as between United/City or United /Liverpool or would it be seen as less problematic if he moved to Real?
