Second half of the season he's obviously improved ... confidence no doubt. TBH I haven't seen all of United's matches in the past few months but by all accounts he's been doing well/progressing.

I did see a stat recently that showed him comfortably top in the number of saves made ... which really does confound me when you consider where United are in the league. It suggests to me that the defence isn't actually that bad ... that while they obviously give up chances, the chances are not clear cut.

Don't get me wrong, it's not just DDG that I criticise it's the folks that gush over him without looking at it objectively. I've had a bit of a hard-on for Valdes for the past 2-3 years as I genuinely think he's been the best however I thought he was at fault for both Madrid goals and like many other Barce players has been off the pace for spells this season.

Anyway, I'm not going to get into an extended discussion coz you lot just love beating me up on this.

We'll see over time.
I think you are correctly in the minority there. Valdes is just not in the "best in the world" bracket.

PETER SHILTON: DAVID DE GEA COULD COST UNITED NO1 SPOT

“I have to say from a technique point of view I wasn’t totally convinced with some of the things he was doing in the early part of the season. He looked very raw and he didn’t look a dominant goalkeeper.

“This is the acid test for him. He let in four in his last game [against Everton] and this is the biggest game of his Manchester United career – maybe of his whole career.

“If he can come through this and have a really good game it could clinch the title for Manchester United and it could cement his progress.

“But if he has a wobbly game and United get beaten, then some people will still be pointing fingers at him.”

They like to talk about him.

If am not wrong, he believes Gordon was best suited to take over from VDS so dont take him seriously.

Can anyone find even the tiniest shred of logic in this paragraph? I have to say I'm at a loss.

He hasn't been here for an entire season and it's a make or break moment? How about the fact that's he's only 20 and has 15 years left of his career?

I swear to God sometimes these former players and pundits come across as retarded giraffes...

So Peter Shilton is blaming De Gea for a loss that hasn't yet happened because of mistakes he hasn't yet made?

Where's his article on how it's Rio's fault for conceeding a last minute penalty that gives City the win? Or Rooney for missing a series of hypothetical open goals? Or Carrick for hypothetically thinking he was shooting the wrong way and hypothetically smashing a hypothetical own goal into the hypothecital top corner giving City a hypothecital win?

Jesus fecking Christ.

i can see him having a schmiechal esque perfomrance monday night, similar to the great dane up at st james'!!! i see it being 1-1 with 30 seconds to go. rafa giving away a stupid freekick. ideal for tevez. its arrowing into the top corner, postage stamp. de gea makes a worldy!! job done! pass us the trophy will ya

Peter Shilton is a bit of a joke really.

The same Shilton who couldn't outjump Maradona?
The same Shilton that got lobbed off a deflection against West Germany?
That's 2 seriously significant World Cup matches...
Should keep his mouth shut.

Because they mainly are. Majority of ex-players are uneducated, narrow-minded, knee-jerk lads who will jump any bandwagon that media suggest.

To say that one game is 'make or break' for 20-year-old player, who was bought as a long term solution and has already proven himself as a huge talent is bordering on insanity. Even by ex-footballers' standards.

Shilton didn't say anything wrong, it's the headline writer thats the spastic.

Shilton was likely paid for those quotes. Whatever else you think about the after-dinner late night circuit, it probably doesn't pay very well.

Doesn't he make his money from after dinner speaking? Yeah, hes a rent-a-qoute.

He does have an unorthodox goalkeeping style but that is exactly what made him make those saves against Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea etc etc. It's a goalkeepers job to keep the ball out of the net by any means necessary and that is exactly what De Gea does. Over the past four months he has been Damn close to faultless.

He reminds of Ronaldo actually in the sense that he was very raw when he came to the club but in three or fours time I expect him to be among the best in the world in his position.

Moronpondlife made his mind up a long time ago that De Gea was shit, and has resolutely stuck to this belief in spite of the evidence to say otherwise.

If anything he should be given credit for being consistently moronic. Shame on you Pogue.

Maybe I can get my motto changed to : 'downgraded to consistently moronic'. Sounds much cooler.:D

Like how he kept trying to come for high balls. Someone's had a word with him about presence. Good save at the end, generally kept the ball well.

Couple of murmurs about the goal, saying he should have saved it. I couldn't see what else he could have done.

Anyone who thinks he was at fault for their goal is either blind or wumming, couldn't do anything about it.

I liked his composure from the Jones backpass, a good save at the end as well.

Made me laugh how every time he went for a cross how Tyler was like "Ohh what's he doing there" but when Hart did it and missed the ball he was schtum.

anyone who says he was at fault tonight needs to lose some fecking weight and get on a football pitch.

I like De Gea, but I think he could do better for their goal. :nervous:

He was exposed by a piece of bad defending. He made one good save. His only other involvements were really just a few dodgy back passes which he dealt with well. An accomplished performance all in all. In fact it was Hart that seemed a bit dodgy to me tonight, which really pissed me off that we didn't test him
