Was Tevez not blocking his route?

Not really. He just failed in the most basics of defending. He was on the wrong side of Kompany and was just watching the ball. If you watch the goal you can see that Kompany's movement is very average at best. A little sidestep and then slow pace to where he ended up with a free header. It was really poor marking and I don't think anyone else made a mistake in that goal.

I was referring to DDG not coming out for the cross...

One thing is quite obvious. DDG is a cool dude. He looked a lot less nervous than Hart on the night, and even with nothing of significance to do during the game he made routine mistakes.

I don't get the "his route was blocked"-argument when it comes to his work in the area, though.

Attacking teams will ALWAYS, without fail, try and block the GK from coming for balls into the box. It's the way it works.

De Gea needs to push them out of the way and come for it properly, and he doesn't do it well enough. Other parts of his game are excellent, he is a brilliant young keeper, but he needs to just command his area if he's going to be our number one.

It's more of a mental thing than a physical thing. Van der Sar controlled his area brilliantly despite a slight frame.

I think it makes defenders nervous when your keeper is as unassertive in his work in the area as DDG is for now.

Didn't have much to do today, but I love his clean handling, ability to make reaction saves, distribution and temperament. Will be interesting to see whether he gets in ahead of Reina or Valdes or both for the Euros, or whether he will be saved for the Olympics.

I was just thinking how much Dave Padden looks like DdG....

I liked the follow-up save from the shot that deflected off Smalling. The way he grabbed the ball behind him looked slightly paranormal to me since I couldn't figure out how he knew where it was.

Instinct. Ending the season strongly for us

I should fecking hope not, he'll miss a chunk of the start of next season.

Agree with Sharky, Craig Burley is a cnut. Best in the world written all over this fella!!!

After his great reflex stop from the deflection off Graham, and then claiming the ball under pressure from the Swansea striker, we're all going "wow, nice one David!", so naturally Craig Burley says "still doesn't inspire me with confidence". Then when de Gea later does a pretty damn good save from Sigurdssons' free kick, Burley still won't take humble pie and says "regulation save..nothing more".

He really is going to be one of the best in the world. He is getting better all the time, in every aspect of the game. He just needed some confidence.

He's come on literally in leaps and bounds. He's one of the massive positives we can all take from this season.

I think he is getting better but due to his shaky start he appears to be coming on leaps and bounds. For anyone who saw him at At. Madrid they would know he was always very good and special. I reckon by 25 he will be the best goalkeeper in the world

Big shout. I think it's going to be tough for him to be the best in the world as he'll have to be better than goalkeepers like Neuer and Hart who are better than him and will only improve themselves, but I definitely think that he's going to be among that top bracket of goalkeepers eventually.

I do rate Hart, but there are elements to his game that people overlook, purely because he is English and we as a nation want him to do well and to want to have a keeper who is talked of as one of the world's best.
1) Tendency to parry shots back into dangerous areas. Been a theme of his saves all season. Some he has got way with (yesterday, the Bent one at Villa Park), others he hasn't (Bayern Munich)
2) Don't think he is as dominant in his area as people like to make out he is.
Learning how to dominate his area, mainly at set-pieces, is the ONLY weakness DDG has in his game as far as I can see.
He has made strides in that sense as the season has gone on and as he (sorry) bulks up and gets more confident that he can handle those physical battles he will get that.
I think he will be better than Neuer and Hart because he is a cleaner goalkeeper in the work that he does than the other two.
When he saves shots, they are parried into safe areas. When he comes from crosses, they are caught cleanly or punched, more often than not, miles away.
We have a good one forum.

He is only 21. I am very excited to see how he plays next season and hopefully all those early season critics get off his back abit. Since he's been back in the side (the Chelsea game) he has been terrific and won us some points alone, and barely put a foot wrong.

Very promising first season for him and he's showed great character throughout.

All i would say is I think he has won us more points than we have lost over the season.

All you really need to ask for from a keeper.

Since the season's almost over, do people think he's lived up to expectations/exceeded them/failed to live up to them this year?

Lived up the expectations of a promising keeper, definitely didn't exceeded them.

As good a 21 year old keeper as I've ever seen - can/will/must improve in some areas but overall very pleased.

He's exceeded my expecations in all honesty but I don't know if my expectations were slightly skewed after his difficult first couple of months.

First few months he showed glimpses of what he was capable of, but had way too many errors, and was disappointing. However, I always for some reason wanted him to start ahead of Lindegaard, and I think that injury to Anders has helped De Gea to no end. Since then, he has been excellent, with very few mistakes. Also seemed to improve his footwork and catching, things which were big faults in his start of season game.

Excited for him for next year, and hopefully for the next 20!

He's done as well as I expected him to perform.

A young, very talented player who is showing he has potential to be the best goalkeeper in the world and he has grown as the season has gone on. I expected him to struggle as he did early on and his weakness to deal with crosses was not helped with Vida being injured but he's improving in that area.

The criticism from the press was unfair, as I said before, if he was English they'd have given him more credit. I also don't think he was helped with the rotation policy, hopefully SAF recognises that was wrong and doesn't do that next year.

He's done brilliantly. He needed some time to adapt but the press were determined to destroy his career at the first sign of trouble. I'm happy to see how hard he's worked to improve on his weaknesses in such a short space of time. Considering his age i'm still willing to accept he will make further mistakes as part of his learning process.

But since he's come back in after Lindegaard's injury he's looked ready for anything.

He has improved greatly over the season, and there is every reason to suppose that from now on he will be at least as good as his form in the second half season. He'll probably get even better since he is only 21.

Casillas was helped with an injury too. Canisarez stepped on an aftershave lotion bottle and injured, I think.

Never seen Buffon in that age. :(

Lived upto expectations would be my pick. Great shot stopper who'l get better with crosses and physicality with age and experience. He's won us points on his own at times this season..

Casillas had been dropped from the Real team when he was De Gea's age for Cesar, a decent but fairly average keeper.

Like De Gea, Casillas was an excellent shot stopper but had a few weaknesses elsewhere at that age. I can only really think of Button and maybe VDS as more complete goalies at the same age.

Van der Sar played 0 matches for Ajax in 91/92.

At de Gea's age he had just 9 matches in senior club football behind him, de Gea's playing his 121st today.

Its pointless trying to compare him to keepers of 20 years ago. No one here is qualified enough to do that unless they watched Buffon/Casillas throughout the season and not just a few games here and there. Keepers can only be judged that way.

Oh really? I probably should have checked the facts first. All I remember was VDS was excellent at a young age.
