Darwin Núñez / signs for Liverpool

While there are more wins for Liverpool in transfer market …. There is always Keita, Mina etc… only time will tell how Nunez will perform but 100m Euros is crazy irrespective of where he ends up!! Makes Halland deal a steal and Spurs ask for Kane last year completely justified!!

But also n Liverpool defence, there is such a shortage of good quality strikers on the market that they might had no option given they also losing Mane who for me will be a big loss next year!!

Anyway, we have big issues in midfield to sort out this year, next year perhaps another forward pops up!!

Mane is 10 times the player though and a massive part of Liverpools recent success. Strange I don’t see many Liverpool fans being bothered about him leaving it’s a huge loss.

The jury is out on Nunes
Mane is phenomenal and once he is no longer there and Salah has gone they will struggle to make top 4.

Mane was poor for over a year until Klopp moved him to CF once they signed Luis Diaz.

The biggest problem they've got IMO is that they've now got 3 players for the same position. Jota, Firmino & Nunez are best up front - must mean Firmino is off too now?

I don't think Jota is anywhere near dynamic enough to play on the wings for Liverpool regularly

Yeah, they're getting very top heavy.

Nunez will surely play up on top as you wouldn't pay 100 mill for someone just to bench him or play him out of position so maybe the plan is shift Diaz off into the wings?

Doesn’t Duncan Castles always spout negative shite about the club?

Well he scored 20+ goals in 4 of his 5 previous seasons no matter where in the front 3 he plays. The season he was poor was the one where Liverpool finished 4th and had half of their squad out injured during Covid.

There's no chance Nunez is anywhere near mane's current level and to go one further goes completely against the way Liverpool currently play so Klopp will have to shake things up. It's going to be interesting.

If Mane could keep up the form from Feb 2022 onwards - of course Nunez is going to be a downgrade. But I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing, hedging your bets on the fact that the lull in his form was an early indicator of a change in his careers trajectory. It's a bit ruthless but it might not be a bad strategy.

And also shaking up the way his team's play is always sensible. It's worth noting Klopp's current system wasn't what he played at Dortmund. He's a really pragmatic manager, who seems to know exactly how to tweak or change his system to get the most out of the players at his disposal.

Part of the point of our current set-up is that the manager shouldn't just be given each and every player he wants. Between the DOF and recruitment team there should be checks in place against the manager making bad decisions.

Given the price involved and the various questions that hang over Nunez' suitability as a transfer for us, as far as I can see they'd have been right to be hesitant. Only time will tell if that hesitancy (if it existed) was correct but on face value it seems very reasonable.

Correct, in fact I'd argue a managers influence on transfers should be limited to highlighting areas that need to be improved.

The specifics on who the club recruits should be left to the DOF and higher decision makers. We're trying to ensure our squad is suitable not only for ETH but also any manager who takes on the job after him.

It would be worth changing things up for a top class player for sure but Nunez has so many question marks over him. One decent season, 2 goals for Uraguay in 11 caps, his all round play seems really poor outside of scoring goals he makes Lukaku look like prime Iniesta on the ball.

To be honest though if there's one thing Klopp is great at it's elevating players I dont think many was bothered when he signed Jota and Diaz and he's pushed them to a better level.

Benfica get 75M now.

then 5M after 10 games.

10M after 60 games and another 10M for individual and collective team performance.

= 100M
A very good deal for Benfica. But where are you getting the numbers from? I must’ve missed a tweet!

Agreed. If he was signing for us, going by our record he'd have been a terrible signing. We're dreadful at developing players. Liverpool are the opposite

That was exactly the old way of doing things. LvG and Mourinho both complained the issue it in public. Ole might have kept mum on the topic, but there's no way he was given more power than his predecessors.

United's recruitment has been led by the scouting team ever since Woodward came in. Which is why we pursued Shaw across two different managers' reigns. Why we chased after Herrera over two windows despite him not being that good and other targets becoming available in the meantime. Why we initially rejected Maguire despite Jose wanting him, but then bought him under Ole because he'd already been pre-scouted. Why we bought AWB out of 806 scouted rightbacks instead of one of the other 805. Why we spent £40m on an unknown 18 year old attacker from the Atalanta reserves instead of a ready-made midfielder the first team was crying out for. Why we wouldn't sign Perisic like Jose wanted. Why we wouldn't sell Martial or Pogba like Jose also wanted. Why Ole couldn't get rid of the bad eggs like he wanted.

And when it wasn't being led by the scouting team, it was often directed by Woodward himself for marketing reasons (Di Maria, Pogba, Ronaldo, Sanchez, etc.).

LvG was the last manager who had significant power over transfers. And that was only during his first couple of windows. After that point, non-managerial business processes began to set the agenda. It's been sabotaging the club ever since.

If anything, managers should be given more control - albeit with oversight from the DOF. The scouting team should be having less say. And the chairman should have almost none.

100m on someone that has had 1 good season… massive risk. Will he get them goals?… most likely will because they create a lot of chances and he’s good In the air, don’t think they have anyone good at heading upfront. Will he have the same impact as mane?..: I don’t think he will. I’d much rather have mane in my team then Nunez especially the way Liverpool play. I’m 50/50 on wether he’d succeed in the prem… don’t think he’ll score as many as haaland or Ronaldo will next season.

By the way, you have some great clips there @Raees

This one loses a bit of credibility when you go full muppet and shpw how we could play with DDG, Shaw, Varane, Bruno, Sancho and another 6 new players

Intent/direction and not necessarily next season I guess, but still :wenger:

Couldn't help it sorry - thats the caftard in me

@General_Elegancia Thanks for the kind words!

I believe that about as much as I believed EtH broke off his family holiday and travelled to Portugal to speak to Medes.

Meanwhile, here's EtH actually enjoying his time off in Ibiza. Not a football agent to be seen.

Yeah normally his co host. Every deal was a running joke of Woodward’s incompetence. But new CEO now. So will be interesting to hear their new take on things.

You would hope. People seem to forget this point. Until we make another Maguire signing and we moan why didn’t we advise the manager we won’t pay X amount for this quality of player.

But swings and roundabouts until we are a winning team again.

The numbers for this lad are massive. We need another forward, but I’m pleased we’re not lumping the best part of £70 million when you consider just how bad our midfield is.

Moving on from Darwin Nunez, I can see a situation where we sign a striker this summer in the £40-50m bracket as cover/competition for Ronaldo. Then next year perhaps Harry Kane could be a possibility.
