Darts

There aren't many who are pure PDC- Lewis, Michael Smith?

Surely most of the top youngsters coming through from now on will be 100% PDC?
Which of the bodies runs the World Youth Championship? Darts players can play until in to their 50's, some longer and with the split only being just over 20 years ago there's bound to still be a fair few players ex-BDO.
But having seen the standard last night I have to say it was nothing short of embarrassing. Hankey going for 2 double tops and not scoring. He did that a couple of times in his prelim match. 5 or 6 scores of less than 30 each leg, compared to a couple per set in the PDC.
How on earth does the Lakeside sell so many tickets when you are basically watching a lower standard than you would see in the local pub?!
I know Barry Hearn has tried to buy out the BDO before but surely darts has to be honest with itself and unify, whoever wins the Lakeside tournament is NOT a World Champion, Gary Anderson would beat them starting on 701.

the difference between both is staggering. i think the fact that it's on the bbc is the only thing that keeps the bdo in business.

That annoys me too - although I'm assuming the rights don't cost much they seem quite happy to wave goodbye to rights to all other live sports yet insist on keeping this cr4p. And they don't even get 100% rights on the darts!

Watched BDO for a bit last night, but the scoring and finishing was so sad. In every way, the tournament feels like a cheaper version of the PDC tournaments. No atmosphere, small stage, clip-on bowtie wearing announcer, cheap water bottles on stage ect ect.

That's for the PDC. That's what Gary Anderson won.

The winner of the BDO gets £100k

Aye, my mistake, I was looking at the prize fund. Still seems mental though when you see the quality on show.

From what I've heard this is the last year the BBC are covering it after 30/40 years. Want to see how Martin Adams fares out especially after his run in The Grand Slam of darts.

'Wolfy' Martin Adams has just gone out in the 1st round to Jeff Smith - not as big a shock as people might think, decent player Smith is, could go a long way.

That's because there is next to no money in the BDO, most of them have full/ part time jobs also it's really the only time they are on T.V, if the BDO pumped a load of money at it, more prize money and more t.v time so there would be more pros and the quality would increase. Look at Gary Anderson did next to nothing at Lakeside and now he's a back to back PDC world champion

They certainly cherry pick in a way. The youngsters want PDC. They'll start at their local pub or town teams (BDO). If good enough they will play for their county. From there its up to them, if they are good enough. Most will opt to try PDC qualifying school tourneys. Some while hedge their bets and get a job, continuing to play for their local pub/town/county. Some of these might bloom later and have a run in the BDO big tourneys. If they do really well, they'll probably still switch to PDC to give it a crack

Shame Smith couldn't put up more of a fight last night. He is a much better player than what he showed in the Final.
Having said that Scott Waites is a good champion, certainly one of the better players the BDO has produced. I wonder if he will give the PDC another crack now. To win 2 finals and only concede 1 set in each is a decent achievement to be fair.

Don't think he will, seems happy enough working and playing darts, their was a program a while back and Scott Waites said he's happy in the BDO and he likes he weekends off. He's at the right age to switch over (Anderson switch over at the same age). If I was him I would have switched over when he won the GSOD

That's fair enough I guess, if he is happy with his lot- ridiculous amount of travel if you want to have a real crack at the PDC. He was bloody spawny winning the GSOD when Wade had the meltdown after being 8-0 up. Taylor beat him 16-2 the previous year!

Great tournament the weekend ITV or ITV 4 come back after with proper schedule but a nice prelude to the start of the premier league.

Taylor too good for Klassen. Anyone else watching the Masters on ITV4?

Wow, hell of a match between Taylor and Wright. Both hitting back to back maxs in the deciding leg.

Jesus, MVG is going to take some stopping tonight. Back to his insane best.

Was a great watch looking forward to tonight, the start of Spring and Feb the start of The Premier League.

Think he might blow everyone away tbh. He got eight of the nine again.
Wonder if you might see good semis then a dull one-sided final like so often on the three match Sundays.

Do you know off hand whats it the best of / first to ? in the semis and final?

Taylor is such a tit- not going for the 121 wasn't pure arrogance, it was ridiculous. Can't believe he lost that match- regardless of that, he had the darts. MVG is as lucky as he is class at times.

Am wondering if Chizzy will actually win a major- can't see him beating MVG, Lewis, Ando etc...maybe if Jenkins or Wade gets to the final.

Am recording it to spare the missus but MVG to easily beat Chizzy.
Spot on prediction and you were right anti-climax final after the two semis. Anyway heres to 4 months of premier league darts.

Start of The Premier League tonight. The standard, averages and checkouts and most of all quality will get better and better between now and the final in a few months time. I will leave it to Jippy prediction wise as never falls too short of the mark. Looking forward to it, Thursday nights just got a whole lot more interesting.

Lineup tonight:

Peter Wright v Michael Smith

Michael Van Gerwen v James Wade

Phil Taylor v Raymond Van Barneveld

Gary Anderson v Adrian Lewis

Robert Thornton v Dave Chisnall

Smith and Thronton were very disappointing, Wade did great vs MVG 3-0 down came back to win 7-4
