Gaming Dark Souls II

Think I'm going to trade in Bloodborne for SOTFS.

Bloodborne is good but there's far more builds available in DS2 and the PVP is infinitely better.

I kept saying it in the Bloodborne thread. That game is too easy (for a Soulsesque game.

I've still not played DS2 because it didn't seem to have the same love an attention as the first. But I think I'm going to grab it as I've heard they fixed a few issues and the DLC is meant to be excellent.

I'm plying demon souls right now. Definitely found dark souls 2 harder although I have loads to do yet in the former.

Like I said in there, it's supposed to be to attract new gamers. Rather than risk the wrath and dumb down souls 3, they decided a spin off route would be better. DS3 should hopefully be back to normal, though hopefully more like 1 than 2.

I imagine it has worked to an extent. A lot of Bloodborne players will likely get the remastered DS2, but from what I've heard from people that have played all three From games is that DS2 wasn't as hard as one, but still more difficult than Bloodborne. Plus the fact they've made the remaster more difficult (high level enemies early on etc). I think it could backfire because a lot of these players will likely deem Souls shit and Bloodborne the superior game because it's more accessible.

Not necessarily. Dark Souls 2 would need the difficulty ramping a bit, remember once you've played one of these games the next doesn't seem as difficult because you know the ropes.

Let's hope they do DS1 properly updated and that does well enough to make future souls like that :)

You're overwhelmed from the start in Scholar of The First Sin. I've died more times in this than the whole of BB/ BB NG+. And yes, BB is the reason I bought it.

Not played the original Dark Souls?

I'm glad I have... though I agree, it's overwhelming at times. The fact that enemies don't respawn infinitely when you rest at bonfires is a very welcome addition due to the padded numbers and higher level foes from the onset of the game.

Still a cracking game, though.

It's like crack, so happy I bought it.

Get the first one too, if you have a PS3... or you could hold out and hope for a PS4 remaster. The layout of the map is sooooo elegant and wonderful, and the bosses are more varied and memorable. Just seems more lovingly crafted. Intro's waaaaaaaaaaaay better too ;P

Good. It's a shame in a way though that you guys never played DS1 first (or of course Demon's soul) because now you know the ropes both DS2 and 1 will be easier and more familiar. That's why they are making the remaster of DS2 harder.

Nothing beats playing DS1 for the first time and not having a clue what the hell is going on. And as Eriku says, the level design, enemies and overall atmosphere is so much better than anything since. I know they are talking a remaster, but things change so who knows. But of you enjoy these games as much as you clearly are, DS1 is a must.

Do you think it's better or worse than Bloodborne?

I'll echo what everyone else has been saying, DS1 is a must play. I started a new save after Bloodborne and I'm loving it.

Combat and world design are better in BB, whilst weapons, armour and the feeling of "helplessness" are more abundant/better in DS II. Although in saying that, I do love the variety of combat in DS II. BB is just more visceral and brutal.

Personally I prefer DS. The world is brilliant in Bloodborne but DS1 is unbelievably good. I also got bored of the combat a bit in Bloodborne, the variety in Souls allows a lot more replayability. I know I sound like I'm bashing Bloodborne but I still think it's amazing

I think I might grab DS2 tomorrow.

The Gutter + Black Gulch can suck a fat one, my God it tested my patiences. Didn't help at all that I went straight to the boss with 30k plus souls (and died), completely bypassing the bonfires that are there (Black Gulch). Must have died at least 20-25 times, either from falling off the scaffold esque structure or those cnuting statues that spit poison.

Blech... not even gotten to those places yet. I've cleared Heidel, The Forest of Giants and The Bastille, with its two connected areas.

I swear I'm not overcompensating .... :nervous:

Hah! After having seen Berserk, I kind of fancy having a ridiculously oversized sword... not seen one that size yet, though!

Only just killed the Executioner's Chariot, and I've started exploring the gutter as well.

Edit: AND I just figured out how to get a sex-change. What an exciting day!

If you save a certain someone using a fragrant of yore, you can trade boss souls for weapons. The big black one is from a DLC boss.

Well, I had a productive day, and finally I know what you're talking about. Went through the Gutter (found two bonfires, I believe?), onto Black Gulch (gah, those f'kin statues), then I went deeper into Huntsman's Copse, through Harvest Valley and Earthen Peak and made my way into the Iron Keep and beat the first boss there. All told, that's 4 bosses today... Woop!

I bloody hate areas with poison, though... and that snake bitch's venue of battle can feck right off, I wound up chugging esti for dear life, while trying to get two-handed dragon's tooth swings to dent her sufficiently that I didn't die before running out.

Really picking up momentum in this game now, though. Curious as to how far in I am, whether I'll trigger the DLC, and if I'm going to have to backtrack because I've missed something (there's an area in Tseldora that I can't find my way to).

You can drain the arena and other parts of that area of poison...

That information probably isn't really helpful now though!

Dang... oh well, at least it was a challenge.

edit: just saw the vid; how the feck was I supposed to get that?

I don't run around with torches, checking everything to see whether I can interact and set it on fire.

You done yet?

This game's crazy... You clear the bleedin' Forest of Giants, Heide's Tower and that bleedin' Pirate Bay, the Bastille, the Cove, the Pit, the Gutter, the Gulch, the Copse, Harvest Valley, Earthen Peak, Iron Keep, etc... then you bleedin' open the doors and see Drangleic castle and faff around there, and apparently you're halfway through. Criminy!

I've now got the location of the Shrine of Winter opened, and I've made my way to Aldia's keep as well. I fecked up and didn't heed the desperate attempts from other players to warn me about the bleedin' sorcerer...

I cleared a room of 3 frickin' giant thingies, then another comes charging through the wall and now I'm seriously fed up. Part of me doesn't want to go back.

*rocks back and forth in fetal position*

Almost finished all the DLC, moving on to NG+ then. The DLC is a serious step up in quality and difficulty, in my opinion. Some great boss battles.

Also, an area that rivals Blighttown for the most annoying area in a Souls game.

Ohhhh, Aldia's Keep, how I hate you. When you get to that hallway, just run, run past the orge, run past the sorcerer and you take a lift down to the next area. The next area, oh boy, prepare to run. A lot.

Don't forget the three DLC areas you've still to visit.

Lift? Is that after using a branch of yore? I went up the path to the left, finding a hallway and a door leading to a chamber of acid that kills my items ;P died to an ogre right before a frickin' fog door. Bah.

And what's with those rocking carriages?!?!

Watch this, I have a feeling you may have missed the illusory wall and bonfire, any way, I forgot there is a pain in the arse boss at the end of the keep, once you beat that, then you take a lift down.

Also, ignore the carriages, they have those giant eyed lizard things in them. You can get the ogre to bash them open.

I used walkthroughs a bit much in the first one, I feel, and it robbed me a bit of the feeling of conquering the game on my own, even if it was still a great experience... so I'm trying not to. I've only really looked up how to get a hold of Ornifex, what I can get for the boss souls, and how the feck to open the doors to Drangleic castle ;P

Well! That's over then... I still have two parts of the DLC to go through, but the main story's done.

Story wise, it's a bit of a thin soup. Gameplay wise, it has some cheap moments in order to up difficulty. Well worth playing for a Souls fan, though :)

I'll definitely be buying this once I'm done with my exams (FROM did a fantastic job with bloodborne in terms of making me want to play games like this). I do have one question to people who are familiar with souls games and it is how do they compare to bloodborne in terms of combat and difficulty? I've read a lot of people saying that bloodborne is kind of an easier version of DS1 and DS2 (that's a plus in my opinion, the more challenging the better).

I've only just started playing Bloodborne, and only just got past the first boss, but so far what I've heard is true: in Dark Souls you, especially as a new player, often charge forward with your shield up, ready to absorb blows. At Bloodborn your default approach is to be more on the front foot.

This carries different considerations. Like your shield being pounded draining your stamina, meaning you can't attack if you're drained enough, and being tactical about lowering your shield every now and again. There's also magic and spells, parrying with the shield, two-handing of weapons, etc. I also understand that there's more of a variety of weapons and armour and whatnot in Dark Souls.

Do yourself a favor though. Do you have a PS3? Play DS1 first.

I sold my ps3 like a year ago :(. I guess I could buy DS1 for PC and figure out a way to play it using my PS4 controller.

I would if I were you. Just make sure you get the DSFix patch, or whatever it's called... apparently it wasn't the best port job.

I struggled a lot to get to grips with Dark Souls at first, and would have struggled even more with the PS4 release of DS2, seeing as they've upped the difficulty in certain ways. Also, DS fans in general would recommend the introduction to Souls being the first one, which is just superior in a number of ways :)

Download input mapper.

Thanks guys, I'll look up what you suggested. I'll play DS1 before this.

Gave SotFS another shot yesterday and i'm finally into it. I'm struggling though - any tips early on? Unmissable items etc.

The Company of Champions can piss off - no wonder I'm level 28 without reaching a single bloody boss yet!

 Rookie mistake! As with all Souls games, the order in which you do things is vital. Been a while but I recall a ring in the Cathedral of Blue (which you should go to after the Forest of Fallen Giants) which means you don't go below 75% health, which is a must-have item, especially as I didn't use a single Human Effigy in the whole game (I am a hoarder and was paranoid about needing them at the end).

Even as a veteran of the Souls games, the beginning of 2 was really difficult...the Pursuer was an incredibly difficult 2nd boss but by the time I got to No-man's Wharf and The Lost Bastille, I found it a lot easier and I did the last 7/8 bosses without dying once.

Not sure what build you are but I was a melee/strength character, so upgrade strength, vitality and stamina...after a while upgrading weapons is far more beneficial than levelling up, so ensure you do that. I think I used the Claymore for most of the game (same with the first) and when levelled it's a good all-rounder. Also as enemies stop spawning after they've been killed (I think) 12 times (although you can bring them back permanently with an item, although their difficulty increases), losing souls is even more of a handicap, so be cautious and cash in if they start getting high.

Good luck!
