Tbh, my sadness at Danny leaving is being almost completely overridden by my annoyance at people absolutely losing their minds over this transfer.
It changes very little. We still have loads of academy players, several of whom none of us had even heard of before LVG brought them through this year. Nothing we've done in this window is without precident for us, and Danny was the one who wanted to leave, something he communicated BEFORE the Falcao loan anyway.
Yet still a whole load of people are tryiing to tie their emotional reaction to Welbeck leaving to a bigger, more poignant and significant watershed that isn't really there. Like a bunch of middle aged men complaining about the lack of good music, when what they really mean is "my preferred era is over"
We're all gutted he's gone, but there's no need to make it into some apocalyptic warning sign.
The reaction to this transfer has been ridiculous. Its like Manchester United have never sold a player that has come through our own acadamy before. I wonder what this place would have been like when we sold Keith Gillespie to Newcastle so we could sign Andy Cole, or all the other players such as Lee Sharpe, Terry Cooke, Darron Gibson, Danny Nardiello, Guiseppe Rossi, Ryan Shawcross. Luke Chadwick, Phil Bardsley, David Healy, I could go on and on.
I'm sorry he's gone, but what do you want to do, just keep Welbeck around because he's home grown and not sign world class players like Falcao, Di Maria and Van Persie? Maybe we shouldn't have signed Roy Keane because we had Robbie Savage waiting in the wings and you know, with him being an acadamy lad and all that, we should have let him join Blackburn instead. You would all be screaming that we were being left behind by every club in the top 10 if we did that. Who would you want chance to fall to in an away game at Liverpool, Welbeck or Falcao? If anyone says Welbeck, they're lying to themsleves to try and prove a point that doesn't exist.
Try telling Tyler Blackett, Reece James, James Wilson, Jesse Lingard, Micheal Keane that LVG doesn't give young players a chance. James Wilson would be the player that suffered more than anyone if Welbeck had stayed ironically enough and yet still everyone wants to dress this up as some kind of travesty.
Welbeck has had his time, if he was THAT good as everyone is saying, he would be in the team and certainly wouldn't have been sold. There is a lot of re writing of history and re evaluating of opinions since he's been sold.
This is the second time he's asked to leave unless he plays as a striker, which is fine, he wants to play in his preferred position and there is nothing wrong with that, but he's not going to displace anyone of our strikers unless they're injured. So we've let him leave so he can play. So what exactly have United done wrong?
Times change, people move on. Accept it. Danny will be fine and so will United.
