One of the best strikers to come through any English academy for ages.
Pace merchants (Owen, Agbonlahor), physical freaks (Heskey and Crouch for differing reasons) and good finishers (Fowler) are 'easy' to produce.
Producing a player with actual ability beyond finishing is different. Suggests a lot of work has gone into Welbeck and we are now seeing it.
In my 20 years watching football, no-one has produced anything like Welbeck.
Overall he could be the best.

Sorry but Owen was far more than a pace merchant. Also a finisher like Fowler simply isnt easy to produce. Quite the opposite actually....its just a natural talent

Take away his pace though and he is less than half player he is with it though.
Maybe Agbonlahor would have been a better example of someone with pace and not much else.
My point was, England produce plenty of these players (Vassell another one).
Similar point with Fowler.
Yes finishing is a natural ability but England produced them before Fowler and will continue to produce them so they are, seemingly, a lot easier to produce than a player like Welbeck.
Used the term easy loosely, hence the ' '. Just couldn't be bothered to bore with exactly what I meant.

Danny Welbeck, born and raised in Longsight, has been a Manchester United player since he was eight years old, and is about to lead the line for England at a major tournament. It actually makes me a tiny bit emotional...

For lads watching RTE did Liam Brady say Welbeck "Technically isn't great"...? Christ.

It really is fantastic. Every single United fan should be chuffed to bits...but no, you still get idiots that dont like him, or dont rate him.

G'on Danny! So proud for him. Fergie got the timing wrong, but was proved right again!

Really questioning if RTE have actually watched Welbeck ever kick a ball. feck me.

Anyway, to feck with them, come on Welbeck!!

if welbeck is not technically great then who is? carroll?

does he ever watch welbeck in action? his first touch is probably the best in our squad, bar berba of course.

I think some people see his unorthodox style and decide that he is therefore not brilliant technically which is obviously not the case. So far in this game he has had his moments buy suffered from the usual England not being that creative

If any pundit says Welbeck "technically isn't great" then you should just disregard anything they have to say.

played well enough. had good touches, worked hard, just never seemed to get played in to really have a run at goal.

Played very well IMO. Deserves better support from midfield, worked his ass off too.

Seriously? Ever heard of Wayne Rooney?

Can't fault him for effort, he done alright today and worked his arse off. His touch is still inconsistent as hell

Welbeck played well today, the only weakness he has at this moment in time is his finishing but i'm sure this will improve over the next couple of years.

welbeck needs players like cleverley who moves the ball quickly around him. that's when he is very effective and can create problems for the opposition.

That's true, he spent too much time with the ball but nobody really making runs around him. A midfielder who would run beyond him would have been a big bonus today

Good to see Welbeck getting some praise from non United fans...as everyone has already pointed out, he needed someone like Rooney to take advantage of his superb 1st touch and hold up play tonight.

Hopefully Hodgson will stick with him in the next match, so he and England can reap the rewards in the final group match.

I reckon he'll stick Rooney up top alone when he's back.

He coped without a player like Cleverley for most of the season.

Good to see him starting and acquitting himself well. Hopefully we'll get to see him and Rooney together.

Welbeck did score a lot more goals in the first half of the season, with Anderson and a bit of Cleverley, than he did in the 2nd half with Carrick and Scholes.

I tend to think the caf overrated the lad but I thought he was fantastic tonight. Did as well as he could given his role and the level of support he had.

They started together 3 times. He's still an inconsistent scorer but he's great at linking with players as long as he's not isolated.

I'm starting a petition, anyone still spelling his name wrong on here should be infracted. It's not difficult ffs.

what i meant is that he looks better when someone is willing to play short passes and linking up with him.

of course he can cope when playing for a team like united.united are much better than this england side for a start.

Great performance this evening, best England player. Has a great ability to take the ball in a tight situation and squeeze a ball through to a team-mate when 9 out of 10 players would lose it.

I thought he was really good, shame he was so isolated at times, would have been nice if he could have had some midfield runners to link up with - but clearly Parker and Gerrard were told to sit, which I guess is fair enough

Would love him to play as well in the next game and to get a goal, making himself undroppable and then with Rooney in behind and Young on the left, and then Milner/AN Other on the right, we'd have the best attacking four we're going to get
