Thought he was excellent until inside the penalty area.

Not the first time either.

Does absolutely great with his movement, and link up, then loses composure at vital times in front of goal. He's an exact opposite of Hernandez at this moment.
Agreed, he looks a class player from his touches and the way he moves but he does lack composure at the right time. Its not exactly the first time he has missed these chances, hopefully he will cut these.

I thought he was very good, aside from the fact he should have had a hatrick. The finishing will come.

You mean like we do every time defenders make mistakes? Welbeck didnt do his job today - he had a shit game.

His link up play wasnt even good. In the first half it was decent, but in the second half it was terrible up untill Norwich scored. Our midfield held the ball well but whenever they gave it to our front two we conceded posession within seconds.

2nd half he was pushed out to left midfield again where he cant play, it isnt natural too him. He went back centre forward when Young came on and plyed better. Sure he missed 2-3 clear chances and that was poor, but he was in the correct positions and his all-round general play was good today.

I'm sorry but he wasn't. Strikers job is to score goals. That's what he is. A striker. And he failed at scoring today on multiple occasions and it almost cost us big time. Thankfully it didn't.[/QUOTE

Hernandez scores or doesn't perform, there is way mote to Welbeck's game than that and he contributed a lot today. If it wasn't for him the ball would have been coming back a lot quicker.

Thought he was excellent. Even the first chance that was saved by Ruddy was nicely done taking first time shot. Rest of finishing could have been better.

He needs to work on his finishing. That was almost criminal today. Especially the missed header...feckin hell.

He always seems to get chances and into dangerous positions which is a great asset to the team, his control and finishing will develop in time.

Well for a start he was playing more as a link up player than a striker today in Rooney's absence (similar to the role he played in at Sunderland, where he often played well without scoring), so he wasn't just in the team to score goals...and most of the chances he nearly "cost us" with only came about in the first place as a direct result of his build up play and movement.

The header was the one really bad one, but seeing as the rest of our side disappeared for 70 minutes of the game, I'm not going to lay into our best player on the day for missing a header.

What's wrong with his shooting ? It's as if in certain situations, he cannot generate power

He gets a little too cute at times, especially after he's already done all the hard work. I can think of at least two times this season (and I seem to think there was another also) where he's beat his man and the keeper and just didn't put enough power on the ball to get it into the net.

Good game from him as far as his contribution to our build up goes but should have scored 1 if not 2 goals today. almost cost us 2 points there..

I've noticed - and this is a pretty specific complaint - that often when he goes one-on-one with the keeper he just flicks it past with such little pace that the defender has a chance to clear it off the line. Trying to be too clever, it seems. I can remember it happening a couple of other times, though I'm sure it will leave his game when he becomes more confident and assured.

He wants to be "too cute" with his finish than clinical at times - looking for the perfect little flick. A few times a returning defender has cleared his chance off the line.

You know what to expect from him most games. He'll sometimes score, and he'll always work hard and contribute a lot to the team as a whole.

He will be as relieved as anyone when Giggsy scored as he missed two great chances late on that could of cost big time.

Good performance in general though but needs to be more clinical in front of goal.

Yeah I noticed it too. It's like he thinks of making the perfect connection for too long before even executing his move.I'm sure he'll get over it, strikers feed on confidence and one or two goals should unlock his.

Yeah, though the one today Giggsy's return pass didn't really give him much choice with, he had to change pace to get to the ball first and by that time the keeper had the angles covered. If he'd basted it, it'd have just been saved or flown off into the stands.

Doesn't really matter a whole lot how his build up is for himself if he can't make anything of it not can it? The final product is his main problem. Like when he came on against Ajax. Shortly after he made that big touch down the left and ran past everyone where we were then 3 vs 2. All that build up for nothing because his pass was this half-assed pass with the outside of his foot.
I'm pretty sure he's a poor penalty taker because every time he comes inside the box he gets worse at football.

He's probably over thinking it too much when he has a chance to score or make an assist. His connection with the ball is sloppy and that's a sign of someone whose complacent or over analyzing the situation a bit too much and I definitely don't think he's complacent.

If it weren't for him? You think Berbatov wouldn't have kept it just as well. Berbatov is a better player after all.

Id say Scholes, Carrick, Evans, Evra, De Gea were all better than him . Thats half the team. And even Giggs and Young made some actual decisive stuff in the end when we needed it.

He was a lot better than Hernandez though, no doubt about that.

Of course they did as we were under pressure at the back most of the game. final third play was poor and the service wasnt great to the forwards. Welbeck done well with what he was given, and chico got no service at all, having to drop deep to try get envolved which isnt his strongest points.

He's very good at everything except finishing. He misses a lot of good, clear chances.

I think this is the 3rd time he's had a shot cleared off the line in the past 2 months.

Except he didnt really.

Our wingers were poor and lost posession a lot of the time. And with Norwich's direct aerial approach that means they will get the ball down the wing and get crosses in.

Carrick and Scholes had full control in the middle of the pitch, it was our front 4 (wingers and forwards) who lost the ball whenever they got it, allowing Norwich to attack. Im inclined to agree that Welbeck was the better of the front 4, but with those missed chances I cant agree that he had a good game.

To say he was our best player (noodle) is outright ridiculous. So many better candidates. Scholes, Evans and De Gea in particular.

Simply not true. He's had quite a number of classy finishes. He's not scoring day in and day out, but don't let his consistency be confused with his finishing ability.

he was excellent today. Linkup play was very good. Definitely top 3 with scholes and ferdinand. An off-day for shooting, but he's been clinical and scored important goals this season so cut him some slack.

Been consistent at finishing is what it is all about. That’s usually what separates great strikers and good

His finishing is a weaker area of his game admittedly, but I don't think I'd go as far to say that he's not a decent finish. He's a decent finisher at the moment.

Typical caf reactions.... always in extremes, think I'll come back later if this thread is anything to go by....
