I think Young is underrated defensively. I've never seen him make a mistake, and he always seems to be in the right place. I agree he needs replacing long term, probably next season even, but for now I'm happy with our fullbacks.

The only possible explanation for that is not watching him play.

Hell, he made several just yesterday.

I watched the game and didn't notice him put a foot wrong. Lindelof was at fault for the goal, other than that they didn't threaten at all.

Their goal came down Young's side with him letting the player he was with sprint off ahead of him as he jogged after him (forcing Smalling to go across to cover for Young and Lindelof to come across to cover Smalling) he also turned his back and appealed for a throw in later in the game as his player was running away with the ball (to be fair he then made a good recovery tackle). There the two major errors, but as usual (and pretty much as you might expect from a converted winger) he makes frequent small mistakes.

But, honestly, I'm baffled that anyone can think that Young is particularly good defensively. He's dogged and committed, and its worth putting up with his errors for what he gives going forward in comparison to his competition, but there's no way his defending is actually good. It's passable at best, and even then he's looked incredibly shaky playing in a back four on multiple occasions when he's actually had to do some defending.

"Reds are willing to pay £40m for the defender — or offer his fellow England left-back Luke Shaw in part-exchange"

I assume the 40m Includes shaw not 40m + Shaw!!!

Opinions and that. I think he's fine there, and easily our best option unless Shaw suddenly gets back to 2015 form.

Depends what you mean by 'fine'.

I don't think he's fine there against teams that will regularly attack us on that side, unless it is part of a back five. Southampton exposed him let alone teams better than that.

I do think he's currently the best option in the squad though, and that he does add a lot going forward which makes him well worth a place in games where we're going to be trying to break down teams who are more concerned with defending. I just don't think that currently being the best option there is really saying anything.

Don't have problems with attitude, don't think his quotes last summer will be repeated here because we're much different than Spurs and we actually win things. I'm just worried about him being out for injury for long term and even when he's fit now, Poch isn't willing to play him till he's sold, that means he'll be rusty as hell and transfers in Jan have no time for preparation or getting fit, we'll need him as fit and ready as possible. However, I'll definitely take him over Shaw any day and I'm sure his ceiling will be much higher than any thing Shaw will reach later imo.

You must have missed the moment where Young thought it was a throw-in and let Murphy (?) run away with the ball as it wasn't out. I'm sure there were a few other moments.

No I didn't, but I did catch the bit where he made an excellent slide tackle to win the ball back.

In a recent interview, Rio was asked to name the best defender in the league and he picked Rose. Thought that was a bit weird.
Yeah, I thought that bit was weird too. Saying Rose is the best, while out injured for most of the season is really weird. Perhaps last season, but I think even that is stretching it a bit. I would have put Rose's teammates Alderweireld (?), maybe even Bailly first before Rose, but definitely Alder.

Yeah, I was surprised by that as well. Thought he would at least name a CB.

Danny Rose who has had 2 good seasons in his career and is injury prone for 40m? No thanks. I can understand the Bale links since he is a world class talent and those are rare and few, but for Danny Rose it would be very unnecessary risk.

I'd like to have him and Shaw around as our left backs with Mitchell as cover, in the long term.
That'd work a charm, it's just a shame Shaw doesn't ever seem to've gotten over that horror leg break in Holland. I'm sure if he could, we wouldn't even be considering a new LB.

I would take Kieran Tierney instead of Rose.

Same, but....

He loves Celtic and isn’t in a rush to leave, is still a baby, so letting him win a few more leagues there while he matures would benefit the club and player in the long run.

Plus Shaw is completely invalid under Mourinho, so using him to offset the cost of his replacement makes sense; he certainly isn’t going to head to Scotland, so Spurs as part of a Rose deal works for all parties.

Rose is very good and would provide a good short-medium term solution to what’s become a shambolic position while Tierney develops.

Finally, Tierney is a class act and will prove to be so for the next decade, but I personally wouldn’t want Mourinho anywhere near him with his strange, seemingly begrudging treatment of certain young players. Jose will likely be gone in 2 years, and that would be the perfect timescale for Tierney.

Dealing with Levy and Rose's injury status is a concern. The Shaw experience makes the PL proven tag fairly suspect.

I watched Bayer's Leon Bailey for the first time yesterday as he played left back in a 5 man backline vs a quality team in RB Leipzig. He looked a physical beast who impressed with his technical skills and work rate. He scored the tying goal as 10 man Bayer came from behind to earn a point.

I know a lot of the transfer forum likes Bailey for the right wing but the natural left footer could just as well fill the hole at left back/left wing back too. I've liked Kieran Tierney and Aaron Martin for the spot but Bailey's physical abilities and technical skills outshine both IMO.

the absolute last thing we need is another non full back playing at full back.

He is trying to. Im sure that is why he was able to make the bench vs Newcastle. But the competition right now is insanely stiff. He might only get a look in at Christmas and he must take it with both hands

I have no idea how people can honestly say they'd rather Tierney, instead of Rose?! There is absolutely no guarantee he would even be good enough to get into our first team, let alone be the answer to the LB problem we face. Rose was clearly one of the best full backs in the league until the injury and the season before that, he was arguably the best.

Would love us to take him off Spurs. It's such an obviously good signing, like the Matic signing. A top player in the league, in the exact position we need strengthening in. Don't particularly care if it's 40m. I think he's a better player than Walker and he went for that.

Why do we spend £40+ million on a 28 year old, who on average is injured 1/3 of the season ?

If we are gonna sign a replacement for Young - let us find someone who is a lot better and will play the majority of the season

Who?

Full backs are key to how a lot of modern sides play. They are at a premium and it seems there isn’t many top class ones about.

Rose is a class act and slots straight in and improves the side significantly. And in a market where Lindelof is worth £30 million I’d pay ten more for Rose.

Totally agree. It’s madness. The SPL is utterly dreadful. Like buying players from from the Championship.

Rose is good but he's 27 and he's coming back from an injury. So will wait to see how he performs for the next 5 to 6 games. I can't bear to watch Lindelof in a United jersey. And anyone who compares him to Vidic or how Vidic wasn't that good when he first came needs to realize that Lindelof is so freaking awful and clumsy. The guy does not have what it takes to do well at OT and I'm sick and tired that he gets picked ahead of Tuanzebe who is a far far better player. Tuanzebe has barely put a foot wrong since he featured for United and Lindelof that the Midas touch of turning things to crap. It's high time we give Tuanzebe a chance to play.

Don't like his attitude one bit, they way he openly pimped himself out during summer is a massive turnoff for me.

Besides, Ashley has made that leftback position his own with some quality performances of late and he seems to be developing an understanding with Martial too.
This just sums up the mediocrity that United fans seem content with these days. Happy with Ashley fecking Young as starting LB for a club who have spent £300M in the last 2 summers. That is simply unacceptable, imagine going up against PSG or Barca in the CL with him as LB. Yes he might look good going forward but his side is always the one being targeted, he's incredibly one footed and frankly is getting on abit now. He would be fine as back up but we need a starting LB.

I am amazed that Jose hasn't signed a single fullback in the time he's been here. Pep came in and got rid of all 4 of City's within 3 windows.

I'm also not getting this obsession with players ages, since when has this become such a big meme. Especially on this site. Its almost like a player goes to Titus Bramble level the moment they turn 28. My word. You're not winning anything with a squad of players under the age of 25. Some signing's arent needed for the next 4,5,6+ years. A stop gap is completely fine if the player is top class and that is what Rose is. He's also not as injury prone as people seem to mention, he had one major injury last season but apart from that he's had a few minor ones. He also plays for a manager who loves to rotate.

Agree with this so much, really we need world class players in every position, like Barca/Madrid/PSG do. Our squad is miles behind them. Obviously that's not realistic to just go out and buy a world class player for every position now, but in reality, our entire defence would only be back-up for those 3 teams. Rose isn't world class but I reckon he'd start for PSG and could challenge Alba at Barca.

Not keen on Rose, he's decent but not technically that great and relies a lot on being fast and relatively athletic, I think we'd be looking to upgrade pretty quickly.

I don't know if this has been mentioned in this thread. Apologies if it has, and I'm reposting.

Rio Ferdinand was asked in the Claire Balding show to name the best defender in the Premiership: Answer: Danny Rose.

Ghoulam tore his cruciate and is out until next spring, but if given a choice, I'd pick him over Rose every single time.

We can wait on Ghoulam until next summer especially since he's free. Ghoulam on a free, Manalos on a free, Goretzka on a free, we should be in on these bargains and save our cash for filling in the holes in the rest of the squad. There's no way that Rose for 40m plus Shaw is a better deal than Ghoulam on a free.

Ghoulam is preparing to sign a new contract.

Maybe we should contact his agent and persuade him not to. As Steve Jobs said to John Scully "Do you want to sell sugar water for the rest of your life, or do you want to come with me and change the world?”. We will win the CL and do many great things but we can't do it with Ashley Young, Darmain, Luke Shaw, Daily Blind, Felliani, Smalling, Lingard, Miki, Mata, Lindelof. We need players that are willing to fight and die for every inch of the field. We need players like Ghoulam, Savic, Fabinho, Jorginho, Manalos and Tah. We need this kind of sales pitch for every part of our squad and all the deadwood shifted out. We need the deadwood replaced over the next two seasons and we will then be in a position to go to war with the elite European clubs. Steve Jobs would label the deadwood Bozo's and there should be no place for them in a club like United.

Steve Jobs would end up regretting that decision massively though.

Spot on.

Would be a definite upgrade from what we have currently in terms of attacking capabilities, speed , and crossing. A PL proven player.
