Daniel James | Officially Signs

So we went into the season with Rashford, Martial and Sanchez as LWs and no RW. The next summer the first target is another LW. I mean what the feck does it take for 3 different managers to realise our right side is non existent. RB and RW would be my priority before any other signing.
I don't see the problem. James is young, versatile and cheap - it's worth a punt. Doesn't mean that RW isn't going to be addressed.

If you got rid of Sanchez and replaced him with this guy we’re no worse off. Get someone to pay half Sanchez’s wages for a year and it pretty much finds the deal.

Given we are in Europa and completely lacking in any wingers there is plenty of room in the squad and opportunities for an out and out winger.

He might not get any better than he is now but he is fast, direct, can use both feet and maybe suits Ole’s game plan. Has the potential to improve and would be easy to shift if doesn’t work out, it’s too sensible a signing to believe it’s true. We’d probably prefer to wait a year and then be trying him to buy him from Leicester or Everton for 50m.

This needs to stop as well, £15m is still a lot of money. Look around Europe and see who clubs buy for £15m. It’s a lot of money for a player who’s never played top level football. And I wouldn’t exactly say he’s had a load of plaudits like Maddison did last season.
Unfortunately our reputation goes before us when we go to buy players.
Let’s face it if a club like Leicester or West Ham were signing him they’re probably paying closer to £10 million.

You tube highlights are not real judge of a player, though with little highlights I like what I see.

Bale or moura type winger, direct, fast, and counter attacker, good crossing. We never were good at scouting under Woodward till now, but I hope we start getting it right now.

looks like he dribbles with either foot

I hope he knows that kicking the ball past the defender and running after it rarely works at a higher level. (Ref Rashford)

He would be a great signing. His pace caused city alot of problems in their cup match against Swansea, scored for Wales recently too. He has pace to burn which we need.

Noticed that too. Kicks and runs when theres space but generally seems to dribble with the ball close to him and with both feet. Good sign

"Manchester United are yet to make contact with the representatives of Daniel James, sources close to the player have told the MEN.
The Swansea City winger is the subject of substantial Premier League interest, but MEN Sport understands reports of United agreeing a purported £15million bid are wide of the mark."

I do genuinely think if he was Danilo James and played in The German first division we would have a few hype videos posted

And if he was, he would be playing at higher level. No german second division players are hyped on the caf.

Was going to mention this. Looks like just any other kick and run merchant really.

Can anyone name me a successful winger in the league right now with that style?

I'm sure you'd find someone suggesting some obscure winger from Koln on here. Let's not forget Tonali plays in Serie B as well and I am very guilty of hyping him.

From the video he seems to be dribbling carrying the ball with both his feet. If thats real, then we should be signing him.

Dont think that's a fair assessment from the video at least. Seems to kick and run when theres space for it but generally dribbles with the ball nice and close to him.

I would love to see Martial's reaction to being kept out of the team by a Championship player who only cost £15m
I would rather see Martial leave. We could use the money to get someone cheaper with a higher work ethic.

Honestly, it pains me to complain about Martial, I wanted him to be our world beater.
Proof is there for all to see. The guy has talent, but no work ethic. That's a fact. Personalities shows on the pitch, and he's personality is not going to change.

I feel like a father who is really disappointed about his son. Martial can feck off as far as I'm concerned.

Must say that's the attitude of someone that's not followed United closely enough during Sir Alex's days or has forgotten. It's exactly the kind of punt on promising youth we used to make. We haven't seen all that much of it lately so it's a welcome change if true.

Not saying you are necessarily wrong, but give us a few examples just in case I'm being too harsh.

I thought he looked decent at dribbling in the clip

Unfortunately, Rashford wasn't really uprooting trees in the reserves. He got a lucky break because of the injuries and he took his chances well in the early years. However, Rashford's game hasn't really improved. He's improved physically but not mentally. Greenwood is a far talented player than Rashford if you are to go by what the scouts say or even the statistics. He's compared to Pogba in terms of talent..... fair enough.... there may not be a contract as such but when a manager buys you, he needs to justify his purchase by playing that player. Why do you think Sarri keeps sticking with Jorginho when the whole world has been crying out for Kante to be returned to his original DM position. The moment he sticks Jorginho on the bench, he loses his credibility in front of the board when it comes to transfers and that's exactly what happened with Jose. He made Ed buy Lindelof and Bailly and Jose asked for two more CBs as he deemed them crap. I'm a firm believer that if you're good enough, you're old enough. Greenwood is good enough. He should at the very least been given minutes in the lesser cup games which he wasn't.

Sarri is playing Jorginho because he is the most important part of his system. While Kanté is a better player than Jorginho, he doesn't have the abilities needed as a regista in the Sarriball system. While I agree that Greenwood should be given more chances in cup games or as a substitute, I think he is nowhere near Lukaku, Rashford and Martial yet. My point about Rashford wasn't that he was more talented than Greenwood at the same age, I just wanted to illustrate that we have a striker that is 4 years older than Greenwood and still need to develop a lot. Greenwood needs at least 3 years to develop into a nailed-on starter for us.

I'd rather see his reaction to being told be will be played as a striker
I don’t understand why he hasn’t been given a proper chance up top like Rashford has this season.

In the current market, £15M is nothing. Do really have no one of this standard (i.e. £15M worth of youth prospect) coming through?
Not really no, only Chong

We just don't actually know do we? Greenwood hasn't been given a fair chance yet. I hope he starts against Cardiff as we will see what he's got then.

Someone may suggest obscure players but it's a different story to act as if lower division players were routinely hyped and insinuate that there is an anti british bias with this type of players.

Chong has a long way to go imo. Still very raw. I like him but wouldn't dream of depending on him in any first team capacity next season.

James is further along. Young hungry option for either wing. Havent seen enough to know how good he is but hes the right profile for what we need
Bang on

Greenwood will establish himself in the team next season. Wait and see

You can get those traits with a lot more attached to them though, I just don't see any point in our current state. This team is in need of some players that have some proven quality under their belt, that doesn't mean old but simply with some seasons at the top level under their belt. Workrate is fine in midfield but it's down the list of traits I look for in wingers as all the harrassing in the world isn't worth anything if you lack the quality to do anything with it on the other end. It's not about him not being my #1 target, I don't have a #1 winger target as I don't care about a winger unless we are going to get a #9 in that can facilitate a winger, which we wont do as "Rashy" will be given the #9 role. In truth I'm more concerned with who we are getting rid of, cutting out the bad apples.

I have followed him enough to give an opinion but that sort of electric pace is quite special. That's Kanchelskis level of pace. Regarding workrate as long as he's humble enough not to try those holly wood passes or the Messiesque dribbling then he should be fine. There had been many hardworking wingers who had carved a decent career for themselves, Park, Di Livio and Fortune to mention a few.

Don't take me wrong, if we do get the guy I won't be celebrating on the streets about him. Having said that, if buying James means getting rid of Lingard, Mata or/and Sanchez then I would settle for that.

Yeah fair, for the record, I actually think it's the opposite to an anti-british bias. Best displayed in the Declan Rice thread.

Exciting. Need to gamble on these signings.

The exact sort of signing Spurs would make and have everyone on here asking a couple of years later why we weren't in for him.

At 15mil it's worth a punt, but I don't see what the fuss is.

His end product and final ball isn't great, but that can improve with age, though I don't see great technique, and that's something you either have or you don't.
Players like Messi, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho etc... Always had the technique, what improves with age is the consistency, and how they apply their techniques within games.

OK, he has insanely frightening speed, but he uses a kick and run style to beat a man, which would work great on the counter, but against a deep organised defense it will be practically useless.

And if we get back to the level where we want to be, I assume more teams will be using a deep back line against us.

Just for comparison look at the video in the turkish Messi thread, and look how his dribbling allows him to beat multiple players with only half the speed of this lad, just by using quick changes of direction.
This is the kind of dribbling that unlocks defenses.

But again, at 15mil it's worth a punt.

Also one last thing, posters saying these kind of punt signings are what Sir Alex used to make, need to realise that back then we were the most dominant team in the league, which made making punts easy, and risk free.

How can people be against this potential signing? Young, very fast and more importantly can clearly dribble and pass with both feet and that is a rare talent to have. Somebody pointed out that the day´s of putting the ball past a defender and beat him for pace are gone. What a utter load of bollocks that is. If you look at the stats for players the top 10 in the PL have Salah,Aubameyang,Mane,Aguero,Sterling,Hazard,Wilson and Lacazette and they all use their pace to devestaing effect. Guy´s like Fraser at Bournmouth does that well also. Two of the main factors of us not doing well are lack of pace and lack or running ability/stamina. Both James and Fraser for example would transform our options on the wings compaired to Martial and Mata. Martial has all the talent in the world, is quick but just lack´s the work ethic needed but he would sure have to step it up in that regard. I also think he will leave in the summer. Mata playing on the right wing just does not work as he´s never been a winger.
Having players with great pace and workrate on each wing would help us a lot in strecthing play and creating more space for our midfielders. If I could have it my way I would keep Martial and sign both James and Fraser plus giving Chong a chance to see what he can do next season. 4 players for 2 wing positions with different skill sets put all with pace.
