Daniel James | Officially Signs

You can even see what Ole would say to him to convince him. Our attack is crying out for someone as direct as him, he may not start straight away, but there is a pathway for you to the first team. One thing though, is there an issue in the CL, as because he'll be from swansea, he technically doesn't count as home grown? I thought Spurs had this issue with Ben Davies.

Are people excited about this?
I'd say what's not to like? His pace looks insane, he doesn't look out of control running with it either.

Whether he will be good enough straight away who knows, but for that price if it doesn't work out we will get it back anyway.

These sort of signings are what Fergie turned into top class.

looks like kick and run merchant. Prefer the Turkish Messi.

I was told the Turkish Messi is crap.

We need the Malaysian Messi who is known to be better than the up & coming Cambodian Messi -- and obviously better than that Icelandic Messi.

I have nothing against pace, I personally don't give a shit about getting in a winger right now as I think we need to refine the diamond and improve the fullback's, however any winger I do rate has pace, the problem is all the kid has is pace from what I can see, he's not got great footwork or skill, he shoves it past people and runs really fast, and his delivery doesn't look all that good either.

Look mate, I get it, he's not your no 1 signing. Its not my no 1 signing either. Having said that he's got two things I like ie pace and workrate. The former is a get out of jail card. I've seen many players humiliating better players then them through it. The latter can make a non particularly talented player useful, especially when added to the first characteristic. No player likes to be harassed by someone who keeps coming at him again and again especially if the player in question can do that at record speeds.

Having said that we need to deal with this wisely. If we're signing James then he mustn't be considered as a first teamer, at least until he proves himself. Having said that we should make space for him in the squad. Its pointless getting the likes of him, Chong and Greenwood if we keep playing Mata, Sanchez and Lingard.

Too true.

I agree. If you have doubts about him making it you're in good company, everyone should have doubts about any young player, let alone one moving up a division to a big club (we're still a big club, right?:nervous:). However I prefer to focus on the positives of us doing a deal for a promising young player, one of which as you say is his speed that could improve our ability on the counter.

Well, I don't know why, but if we sign this guy, I have a feeling he will be really good for us. How long has it been since we obtained a player like this. Under the radar etc.
I am hopeful he will prove to be a good signing

Is it quite as black and white as that?

We have to look at potential and suitability. If this is true then James has been bought for the future and we have to weigh that up with where we are right no and who we can genuinely attract.

I doubt there'll be a marquee signing like previous coaches

Yeah wheres the fear of young players come from? People talk like Beckham Scholes Giggs Butt and the Neville Brothers, Rooney, Ronaldo and the list goes on were at the peak of their careers on their debut for us

Reminds me of the Nick Powell signing. I hope I’m proven wrong. But, from Sancho to James is a tad worrying.
Never saw the talent in Powell

I still feel Sancho has to be our summer priority regardless of this fellow. He's a special talent who will strengthen our position to challenge over the next decade.

Let me put it this way, in this United if I were to replace my second string winger with a cheap pint I'd go for someone with elite pace and high work rate. That's the sort of bench option I'd like rather than the likes Mata who no longer fit or are up to the physical demands.

Obviously as a starters we need top class technical footballers (or ones with that potential).

Can someone please clarify how often he has played on the RW for Swansea?

Otherwise I can’t see why we are buying him.

Unfortunately unless you're signing "the best" it's seen as an error these days.

I've never seen this guy play before but from the videos he definitely has something. For 15m it's a low risk signing with the ability to change a game. Nobody else in our squad can beat a fullback and put in a decent cross, this guy certainly looks that way. Pace is very important.

I think we might have gotten a very strong "NO" from Dortmund with regard to Sancho. Or Sancho himself may have said he wants another season to develop in Germany first. Whatever the case, I am sure that even if we were to get Sancho, he would cost 100m or more - he would be the most expensive of whichever summer target we would get this window. That will blow up about half our budget.

In the current market, £15M is nothing. Do really have no one of this standard (i.e. £15M worth of youth prospect) coming through?

Would gladly blow up half the budget on him. That kind of class on the ball is not easy to find. That too on the right wing.

I'm cautiously optimistic, and to be honest I'm happy to see us (potentially) doing deals at the lower end of the English market. That's not to say it will definitely work out and it's not to say I don't want Sancho, but I've grown tired of us playing billy big bollocks at the top end, gazumping rivals with eye-watering fees and wages seemingly just to be talked about in the media, with zero regard for squad building.

People will say Chong but I don't think he looks anywhere near the standard.

Greenwood may start his career wide but he's a striker.

Greenwood is not a pure winger and Chong plays on the right but primarily left footed. The others are good midfielders and I don't see anyone with that pace!

Must say that's the attitude of someone that's not followed United closely enough during Sir Alex's days or has forgotten. It's exactly the kind of punt on promising youth we used to make. We haven't seen all that much of it lately so it's a welcome change if true.

I'm always kind of excited by new signings to be honest, even when I know nothing about them. The potential of new talent is intriguing.
I feel the same.

I also like the profile of player - I don't necessarily know a lot of this specific player but I like the fact he's young, British, hungry and cheap.

I don't see this singing meaning we won't buy a RW for a larger fee (Pepe, Sancho, Chiesa, or whoever it may be) either. Low risk, high reward.

Let’s hope the fitness problems are sorted before he comes in.

You’ll know we have trouble if even this guy arrives and within months can’t run for shit.

This needs to stop as well, £15m is still a lot of money. Look around Europe and see who clubs buy for £15m. It’s a lot of money for a player who’s never played top level football. And I wouldn’t exactly say he’s had a load of plaudits like Maddison did last season.

I would love to see Martial's reaction to being kept out of the team by a Championship player who only cost £15m
Should be a kick up the ass for him - but it won't be.

In any case I don't see him replacing him as of next season. Hopefully it inspires him but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Pace, fitness and injury free. Otherwise you cant play the modern game. And yeah, in signing the best we usually sign the castoffs of other clubs now. Real talked up the sale of Di Maria for months and we took the bait. They are doing the same with Bale - they want him to sell for a big fee and have been talking him up all season how ‘Zidane doesnt want him’. Hope we dont fall down that hole

Transfermarkt says it's 23 games on LW, 5 on RW, 5 as striker/false 9 this year.

So we went into the season with Rashford, Martial and Sanchez as LWs and no RW. The next summer the first target is another LW. I mean what the feck does it take for 3 different managers to realise our right side is non existent. RB and RW would be my priority before any other signing.

Chong has a long way to go imo. Still very raw. I like him but wouldn't dream of depending on him in any first team capacity next season.

James is further along. Young hungry option for either wing. Havent seen enough to know how good he is but hes the right profile for what we need

You can get those traits with a lot more attached to them though, I just don't see any point in our current state. This team is in need of some players that have some proven quality under their belt, that doesn't mean old but simply with some seasons at the top level under their belt. Workrate is fine in midfield but it's down the list of traits I look for in wingers as all the harrassing in the world isn't worth anything if you lack the quality to do anything with it on the other end. It's not about him not being my #1 target, I don't have a #1 winger target as I don't care about a winger unless we are going to get a #9 in that can facilitate a winger, which we wont do as "Rashy" will be given the #9 role. In truth I'm more concerned with who we are getting rid of, cutting out the bad apples.

Yeah if it were a straight choice between James for £15m and modest wages and Bale I'd honestly go with a punt on the former. I've had enough of big statement signings who are past their best and/or don't want to play for United.

I do genuinely think if he was Danilo James and played in The German first division we would have a few hype videos posted

I'd rather see his reaction to being told be will be played as a striker
