I have a question about gardening leaving. Apart from work ethic what really prevents Ashworth to invite Jim to his garden, share some tea and talk football like old mates do?
Has there ever been a precedent that ex-employee was charged/ sued for such things?

Yeah, as you say self explanatory, but we don't have a similar expression in Norwegian for a leave - it would be more like a sabbatical. According to my friend Google:

The etymology of the phrase stems from (yes, we meant to) a semi-derogatory term used to evoke the image of British civil servants on suspension at home in limbo with nothing to do but tend to their gardens.
 
Got an irrational dislike for that guy now. Doesn’t matter if we didn’t want him or wasn’t a serious link. Imagine going to Chelsea. Small time.

It's a way of saying you've kicked them out of the house but not out of the property.

It's saying they will still technically be an employee getting paid but is being kept away from the business and not working so can spend time doing other things (i.e. gardening). I don't think it's kicking someone out of the house but letting them squat in the garden.

Sad for yet another one of our key non-playing personnel to leave, and once again to Chelsea, but I trust my club’s operations 100%. We’ll already have the replacement lined up, and his replacement when he leaves, and the next and the next.

He’s on gardening leave until November, or most likely until they pay compensation we both agree on.

Absolutely nothing, it's not like Ashworth is going to be under surveillance (other than paps perhaps) :p Just don't do anything stupid like meeting at a restaurant etc.
 
All this gardening leave , contract talk etc is a load of nonsense.

it’s only official capacity and he can easily be working unofficially for United or there can be a loophole in his contract which means he can’t work for another football team but nothing about another industry which is common.

I imagine INEOS are only paying him off and willing to wait as a means of looking above board. They can quite easily just agree to this and then contact him privately just like they did before this all came out and have him consulting etc on phone calls.

Yeah I was wondering how gardening leave can be monitored. There's nothing stopping Ashworth from jumping into informal Zoom meetings with key stakeholders. Of course, they just wont have minutes or records.
 
Been on gardening leave once for 3 months, at the start it's great but after a few weeks really starts to get boring all your pals/partner are at work so whilst the 1st few weeks are fairly productive towards the end it's a bit shit, I'd have liked to have just gone away for a large bit of it if I were single but the wife frowned upon me visiting my mate in Canada for a month

The one you've been linked with was one of Potter's guys and followed him all the way from Östersunds to Swansea to Brighton to Chelsea. He stayed when Potter got sacked but without Potter I would guess his role/influence has taken a bit of a hit and chances are he's open to moving.
