If Ashworth really is going to be so vital to the longer term project, then strike a deal, pay up the compensation, and get him onboard soon as possible.
Whatever it costs, it will be small change compared to the sums that we wastefully spunk away in a usual Summer transfer window, so he will very quickly be good value for the money...

I hope he is worth all the effort.

We should send our laptop and ask him to work from home :D

They wouldn’t be this salty if he was not worth it in my opinion. As it is right now they’re acting like a 14 year old whose crush has just said she doesn’t like him.

Ashworth isn't coming to work on the summer transfer window. He's coming to put people and structures in place to ensure others are better at working on transfer windows, along with all the other footballing areas of the club.

One of the first structures he'll be working on, is not being taken for mugs in negotiations just like this one.

He can do large parts of his job without being present at Carrington or OT, just as I guarantee you he did for Newcastle when he was on GL at Brighton. Newcastle know this, and they'll know that unless we're Man City levels of thick, there won't be a thing they can do to prove it. Which is why once they've blown off some steam and tried to save some face, they'll come back to the table and compromise.

This is how the gardening leave is bullshit. The ex City man isn’t allowed to work for us until the summer and it can’t be said Dan is his pick so it’s framed like this

Would be a decent surprise!
Himself, Berrada, Jim, Brailsford and Blanc set up a Whatsapp group where they discuss who they feel is the best candidate for Head of Recruitment and any other roles they feel need filling or replacing. Then he lets the team in place do their jobs just as he would be doing if he was at the club.

In the meantime, the board send him an outline of their deep dive into the current structures and organisation of the club, and he can spend the next however many months planning how he wants to reshape it, all the while staying in contact with Berrada and whoever they hire as each of their number 2's to ensure things are being put into place in his absence.

This is a marathon not a sprint, and there will be plenty to keep him busy with while Newcastle foot the bill.

Isn't that what gardening leave legally is meant to prevent though? What's the point of gardening leave if that's possible? That's basically just doing his job from home.

Exactly.

GL as a concept exists to prevent insider trading, or client poaching or corporations losing key strategic plans to rival companies. In football it is pretty ridiculous as a concept to be honest, as Newcastle will well know from when they were in the same situation 2 years ago.

What key information is Ashworth going to share with United that Newcastle can prove we didn't already know? How are Newcastle going to prove private phone calls or messages have taken place between Ashworth and Brailsford or Berrada from inside his home?

United and Ashworth would have to be mindnumbingly stupid and brazen to get caught doing anything provable in court, which they won't be.

The dick swinging in football is hilarious. Clubs and fans love it when they poach the best talent from clubs "beneath" them, but then take umbridge when it happens to them

Garden leave unusually continues for the duration of the notice period of your employment contract. You are correct that you cannot "put someone on it for life" because notice periods are usually measured in months. However, your garden leave does not automatically end when you find new employment - you continue to be employed during the period of garden leave (and will still receive a salary) and so you cannot start work for a competitor until your garden leave ends.
Your previous employer is no longer required to pay you if you start employment for a new employer as that was essentially their aim by putting you on gardening leave in the first place. He should be able to just start working for us and at that point Newcastle will no longer be required to pay him for his gardening leave.

Especially coming from fans whose go-to chant when they play us is that they signed a player at our expense 30 years ago.

Look at these children, pretending to be journalists

They seem to forget they were asking £60m for Sean fecking Longstaff, they can get to feck moaning about what we asked for Lingard

A huge issue with football journalists in the UK is that the tribalism permeeates their journalistic work. It's like if you cover a club, you have to start supporting them or pander to their fans or expect to be used by the club's PR department no questions asked. Journalistic integrity goes out the window completely.

It's extremely visible here with the unprofessional Newcastle journalists covering this case, also with journalists in general covering Liverpool. Unlike with us; we are stuck with Simon Stone who hates his job/life and Luckhurst who despises everything about the club and uses a fan forum as his main source of inspiration.

All this stuff is great.

Barrada, Ashworth etc. love where we’re going.

But Sir Jim is still only owning 25% of shares and the glazers still own the club. The debt is still there and the glazers will take dividends.

truthfully we’re not in that much of a better state than before until the leaches are truly gone unless there’s a hell of a lot more to this deal than we know.

Debt is quite normal for a big football club.

The big problem is we do actually need these people in Carrington.

When is Barrada free to start? When will Ashworth be? When we get our Head of Recruitment, how long with their notice period be?

It's all very well saying stuff can be arranged over zoom but there are dozens of people who work for Utd who need to change the way they work.

Also we cannot just "wait for the summer". We always do that and always screw up our transfer windows because of it. We need to get all our ducks in a row before the window and just execute our plans in the window, with appropriate plan B,C,D if our plan A doesnt pan out

I've always thought the compensation for managers etc is far too low. Weird you can get a top manager for the cost of a squad player

It's not perfect, but it's not like we're paupers even with the debt.

We'd absolutely be competing at the top if we'd spent the crazy money on transfers and wages over the last decade for players who didn't end up being close to worth it more sensibly.

Problem is what happens in terms of the summer window if this really drags on. INEOS will want to make their mark first opportunity they get

Both parties know that the payout we are willing to pay would drop dramatically if they don't agree to a deal before the summer. That's what the whole "United will wait" is about. It's basically us telling Newcastle to lower their demands or be prepared to get virtually nothing if they drag this out too long.

I think United should humour Newcastle to a degree over compensation, but there should be a limit. If Newcastle get greedy then just leave it and have Dan serve his garden leave wink wink.

Yeah, this is where I'm at, too. I think this gets done at around 8 million, probably, but 4 months gardening leave.

But he better be fecking good, though. And I mean fecking good.

Can’t we just buy out his contract? What’s he on, 250k a year?

Simon Stone saying his gardening period is a year

Manchester United have made an official approach to Newcastle for their sporting director Dan Ashworth.

The Red Devils have made Ashworth a key target as the Ineos Group look to revolutionise the club's structures.
Earlier on Monday, Newcastle confirmed Ashworth had been placed on gardening leave after requesting his release.

Manchester United believe they are in a strong negotiating position as Newcastle will have to pay the 52-year-old during his leave.

However, Newcastle feel they are also in a strong position, given how keen Manchester United are to bring in the man widely acknowledged as one of football's most effective sporting directors.

The Magpies have Ashworth under a contract that prevents him from working for anyone else into 2025 unless compensation is agreed.

They believe they will be within their rights to ask Manchester United for a fee well in excess of £10m.

This is not even a player transfer... why so complicated and dramatic. Newcrapstle just want to feck with us. Meanwhile they gave Eddie Howe all the power.

Let him go on gardening leave, the we just have a lot of barbecue meetings at the Ashworts. Not talking football, at all.

We are building from scratch and sadly these things will take time

good luck to newcastle suing us. they know that they cant stop it happening and will be glad with 5-10 m i would say

Ashworth isn't his pick, he is friends with Brailsford and was lined up for United long before Berrada

its for sure a plan by brailsford but i would assume that they checked it with berrada. ineos seem to be quite good at building a structure

Offer them a fraction of what they are asking for. If they reject then leave them pay his wages and wait for him.

£20m seems obscene for a member of the non-playing staff

No way he’d have been given the green light without Berrada giving his blessing. Why would he take the chief executive job and accept no say on such a vital appointment

Isn't Berrada on 'gardening leave'

Is he allowed to be saying such things :nervous:

We're not paying them £20 Million or waiting 2 years for him.

We will settle at around 10 and he'll probably start after the summer

I cant understand how they can legally be able to demand £20m for him, im sure if he challenged it through the court he would win or at the very least Newcastle would agree a settlement outside of court.

To be fair, I'd imagine the Saudi's can set that up fairly easily.

The Glazers don't take dividends anymore.
